THE SCULPTOR.

From a paper in 'he Literary World, signG. H. Culvert, w« extract the following account of the methdd In which statue* aro wrought from the block of marble: **Tho conception b»in|[ matured in tho artist's mind tha first step in the procoso of gitjng form to it is 10 erect, on a firm pod asm I, akeletou of iron, whoso height, brondjh and lunbf are determined by the size and shapo of the proposed statue. In this cans it would be about five feet high, wiih branches, firs: at the shoulders, running down forward fur the arm*, the# at the hips, to support lhe large mass of clny in the trunk and thence divided into two fot the legs. About this strong, aim pie frame, is now roughly built, with wet clay, th« pre-deiermined imnge. Rapidly is this moulded inio approximation to the human form{ and when the trunk, head and limbs have beon definitively shaped, then begins the close labor of the mind. Tho living model# are summoned, and by their aid the surface is wrought to in I**st stnge of finish. I sny moduli, for to achieve adequately a high idea several are needed. Nature rarely centres in one individual all her gifts of corporeal beauty. For the Eve, Powers had mora than score of models.

The modern Christian artist cannot be fa* vofed, as was the pointer Xeuxi# of olJ, to whom a Grecian city, that had ordered from him a picture of Helen, sent a number of it* choicest maidens, that out of their various graces and beauties he might, as it were, ex* tract one matchless form.

For the-Slave," the character Powers had eMnblished in Florence for purity and uprightoess, obtained for him nnr model (who arts not a professional sitter,) o.' such perfeC' lion .T form

BS

to furnish nearly all that he

could derive from a model. Wiih this breathing figure before him, nnd through his precise knowledge of the form and expression of every part of the human body, obtained from the study of nature and his own deep a r* tistic intuitions, the clny under his hnnds gradually grew into life nnd assumed the elastic, vital look, which no mere anuiotnical knowledge or craft of hand can give, but which is imparted by the genial sjmp.nhy with nature's living forms in alliance with a warm sensibility to the benutilul—qualities which crown and render effectual the other lets elevated endowments of art. Thus by the most minute manual labor, directed by os a re in a if el he S a as a there the artist's work ended—tho creation was complete. The processes whereby it was now to be transferred to marble, though of a delicate, difficult kind, and requiring labor and time, are purely mechanical, and are performed. under the artist's direction, by iuspir* ed hands.

In order that the soft clay imnge bo transformed into a harder substance, without suffering the slightest change in its surface, mould is applied to it in the same way and with tho same material as when a cast is taken of the living face and head bv means of a semi liquid plaster of Paris. The clay figure is entirely covered with this substance, from one to two or more inches thick, provision being made to take off the arms, and for splitting the trunk after the plaster shall have hardened.

The clay is then all taken out, the hollow mould is cleaned, and then re filled with semiliquid plaster of Paris. When this which now occupies entirely nnd minutely the placeof the cla'v, has in its turn become hardened, the outside crust of plaster is broken from it. and then is laid bnre an exact fac-simtle of the original clay figure in hr.rd, smooth plaster of Paris, capable of bearing the usage of the Studio, snd of receiving the mnny marks that are to guide the marble cutters, whose work now begins.

First comes the blocker-out, with his heavy mallet and coarse chisel, under whose rough blows the white block soon begins to grow in* to a rude likeness of humanity. Then a finer workman, who loosens more of the folds hat oterlte the beaming imnge which the artist is bent on disclosing from the centra of the marble.

And finally, the artist himself, or, as in this case, a refined worker, schooled under the eye of Powers, gives the finishing touches, reproducing with unsurpassed accuracy, in the transparent pure marble, every swell, indentation and minute curve, all the countless delicacies of detail which combined with and forming sweeping lines characterize the origi ml as moulded in the clay by the hand of Powers.

DEPTH OP THE OCEAN.

At the annual meeting of the Association of American Geologists and Naturalists sit* ting in Bolton, Commander Wilkes, U. S. N., made a communication upon the subject of the depth and enltness of the ocean. The mnxi* mum depth has never been attained.-•» Capt. Ross sounded 4600 fathoms, about 27,* 000 feet, and got no bottom. There ore great difficulties attending d*ep sea soundings Bottom has been obtained io 2,000 or 3.000 fathoms* Experiments show that the greet valleys of the ocean run at right angles to the ranges near our coast. The basins of the southern hemisphere dtp and rise alternately from the equator toward* the pole, causing very unequal depths of water. C»pt. Wilkes hoped that some means would yet be discov

—In latiiude from 54 to 60 suuOi, the temper •tare is the same at top and bottom. It has been asserted, as the result of experiments, that the mean temperature of the Mediterranean is 55 degree*.

Experiments were made by Capt. Wilkes up«n the penetration of solar light. A pot painted white was let down into the water, and the point of invisibility marked~-apon taking it out, the point of visibility was mark* ed, and tbe two were found to vary but a fathom or two. In water at 30 degrees, the pot disappeared at six fathoms—in water at 70 degrees, at thirty fathoms—in the Gulf Stream, at twenty-seven fathoms—just outside of it, at twrnty-three fathoms.

It is devidedly the moat healthy^part of theibia Ihe Innds linving a gentle uudiilating surface there are no ponds, swamps or marshes, and no local disease. The atmosphere is pure and pleasant. During ihe warmest months of summer there is a

breeze playing over the prairies, und the nights are invariably cool the thermometer never rises above 85 to 90 snJ^in the winter never falls below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. It abounds in springs, and at ihe depth ol filieen or twenly feet, in .he midst of tha prairie, .he best water can be had mil the small streams are Peculiarly clear and crystal like. Colonel William Myers, who removed there Iro-n Garrard county, hv., last fall, says, in a letier dated 8ih May, 1847 "I will not venture to tell my friends Kentucky that the land here was better than the best land in Kentucky because they would not believe it but now I awrl it, lor the soil is deeper, being in many places five feet, and the kindest land to work I ever put a plo«.2h m. I wnlr believe lhal around the lorks of the Trinity, lies the largest body of first rote land in America. From iheforksof the Trinity to Snnta Fe. is only about 600 miles by the old Spanish trail, and the newspswrs in Texas afe now ndvocatiug the route up the Trinity, and Mm its forks by land, as in every respect preferable to the one by Independence, Mo. Why should Emigrants think of going to Oregon or Ca.Hornia when ihey can obtain better land for nothing so much nearer home

This is perhaps, the Inst opportunity that will ever ofler on the continent of America of setting lends for the mere cost of surveys and costs ol deeds. Ourcolony is emphatically ihe place fort uf poor man's home: there ho does not have to feed his cattle lor six or seven months in the year there he will have a home market for aII the surplus he can produce for years to come, and wiih industry and economy. speedily become nch.

Let no Emigrant loose eiaht of the important fact that our contracts with the Government ol Texas expire on the first day of July. 1843, and thai lis. must not only be in the Colony, hut that he must have selected his

house or cabin thereon, nnd be residing therein with his family by that day-one day after thii date, and ihe opportunity, of gettine lands for nothing, i. perhaps, lost forever. Persons desiring additional in a a 7 W
