A TOOCBINC JNCIDRNT.—Tli^NEW Qrleans l^icayune says thai a fe\v days #irtcea goo''®* man of that city saw in the streets irtovely fittlo girl or tender years standing on the banquets bathed in tears. The good ma& approached her, and taking her by the hand in. quired the cause of her anguish. The dear little creature continued to sob bitterly, until at length she exclaimed "My father and mother have been tnkon to Heaven, and I am
left an orphan." Then* were three or moro persons by at this time, and the feelingly eloquent words of the engaging little one brought tears from every eye. The worthy gentleman who first addressed her Raid a few kind words with a view of relieving her, and then auid "1 will be to you a father, and my wife (and no mm hua a better one) will greet you with a mother's smiles." lie then took her by the hand and carried her to his residence. This is an achievement, on the field of mercy, of which any good man should be proud.
A new and important machine, which doea away with the present system of rope making has just been made by Mr. Whipple,of Providence, K. I. By this process, rope can be made tn the piece a milo long, or to an indefinite length—in a square room—thus doing awnv with the present system for long ropewalks. Two twists are made at one revolution, without twisting or turning at the end of the rope, as is now the custom. The strand is formed and rope laid in a more per: feet inner and at far greater speed than is now attained. From 150 to 200 feet of two inch rope can thus be made in a minute smaller sizes much faster. One man could tend a number of these machines at once. If this invention is carried on, a process will soon be in use, not only doing away foreign importations and controlling our own market, but exporting to other countries. Two«:hirds of all the cordnge made in this country is from dew-rotted American hemp, at an average value of 5 cts., though the present rate is 7 cts.
TORNADO AT CORNWALL, U. C.—We find in the Montreal Courier a detailed account of tho tornado at Cornwall. It appears to have been leally terrific. The clouds were dense block and fearfully agitated, rushing towards each other, whirling round and then bursting asunder like smoke from a cannon's mouth. The air was hot, and thunder and lightning appalling, and the rain came down in torrents. Houses and stables were blown down and unroofed, trees and fences levelled with the ground, and people were running around distracted, cattle almost Imntic with alarm— Only oae life was lost, that of a little girl of thirteen who was blown into the canal and drowned. Several saved themselves frcm the same fate only by clinging to the posts, trees, &c, against which they were blown,—one man was taken up several feet into the air.
WELTED COPPER.—The large masses of Copper, of which we have recently spoken as from the Lake Superior country, weighing 3,100 lbs., and to two pieces, wns fused and run into bars at the furnace of Messrs. Knapp &> Totten last week. The experiment was completely successful. The Copper was tur ned out into pigs, and with a loss of not more than two per cent. The pigs were afterwards taken to the rolling mill and run into bars, and of course ate rendy for the founders.— Some forty or fifty tons of Copper, we learn, will be brought to the city from the Cliff" mines and prepared for domestic use. We look, ere long, for an immense Copper business between tho mining country and Pittsburg, and the Western country.—Pittsburg Gazelle.

Our Grant lies in the Nori|)-Ea$tern part of Texas, between the 32d and 34th degrees of J.ititude North and IDih and 22d detrees of Longitude West from Washington beginning on the sooth aide oj Ken ,'{|Ver,
point 12 milfBeast of the False Ouacliitta, running tlienoe due South 100 miles, thence fc^st 164 miles, thence Nonh 100 miles, thence West 164 miles to the beginning, having a front on the meanderinga of tied uiver ol nearly 300 miles and includes within its limits the upper and lower Cross Timbers, and the1 head waters ol the Brasos aad^Trinity Rivers, the Trinity being navagable for Sieambnai^ of light draught, from the tnterfor ol the Colony to'the Gulf of "Mexico into which it empties, soine 25 miles frorn Galveston, and Red River to 1 tie Mississippi, affording an outlet for thesurplus "productiona of the country. This portion of J1 CXOB is peculiarly adapted tothekrowthof Wheat, elp6rience wiihin the last two yenrs having tested the fact, that 11 will produco 40 bushels to the acre, weighing 65 to 70 pounds to the bushel. Inilim) corn, rye, barley, oats, sweet anl Irish potatoes, peas, beana, melons, garden vegeiables of all kinds, eotton, hemp and tobacco, and the celebrated muakeet grass wjliich covers the prairies and upon which cattle subsist, and keep fat during the winter, and require only to be oapaeionally salted and kept together, to rear them in great numbers. •The planting seasons commences in February and continues until July but the early crops are the mos 1 hose go-
should go to Helenn, or Columbi|, Ark., Memphis, Tenn., or Natchez, Miss., and thence across by land or to New Orleans, nniiethence by steamboat up Red River to Slireveport, Louisiana, a: which place an sgent will be statioiied, who will give pie emigrants directions as to their route by land to Dallas and Stewartsville, a distanco of semi 200 triiles.
Our colony is rapidly filling up with an industrious, intelligent and moral people, end must soon become the most populous part of Texap. The Government has recently formed the counties of Grayson, Dallas, Denton, Collin and a part of Rotipacin and Navarro within theGrant. It is decidedly the most healthy part of the state the lands having a gentle undulating surface there are no ponds, swamps or marshes, and no local cause for disease. The atmosphere is pure and pleasant. During the wormest months of summer there is a constant breeae playing over the prairies, and the nighis ure invariably cool the thermometer never rises above "5 '0 90, and in the winter never falls below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. It abounds in springs, and at the depth of fifteen or twenty feet, in the midst of the prairie, the best water can be had all the small streams are pecul
clear and crystal like. Colonel William Myers, who removed there jrom Garrard county. Ky., last fall, says, in letter dated 8th May, 1847 "I will not venture to tell my friends in Kentucky that the land here was better tlion the best land in Kentucky, because they would not believo it but now I assert it, lor the soil is deeper, being in many places five feet, and the kindest land to work I ever put a plough in. I verily believe that around the forks of the Trinity, lies the largest body of first rate land in America." rrom
Trinity to Santa Fe, is only about 600 miles by the old Spanish trail, and the newspapers in Texas are now advocatiug the route up tho Trinity, and from its forks by land, as in every respect preferable to the one by Independence, Mo. Why should Emigrants think of going Oregon or California when they can obtain belter land for nothing so much nearer home
This is, perhaps, the last opportunity that will ever offer on the continent
for the mere cost of surveys and costs of deeds. Our colony is emphatically the place for the poor mun's home: there he does not have to feed his cattle for six or seven months in the year there he will havea home market forall the surplus he can produce for years to come, and with industry and economy, speedily become rich.
Let no Emigrant loose sight of the important fact that our contracts with the Government of Texas expire on the first day of July, 1848, and that he muBt not only be in the Colony, but that he must have selected his land buiit a house or cabin thereon, and be residing therein with his family by that day—one day after that date, and the opportunity, of getting lands for nothing, is perhaps, lost forever. Persons desiring additional information, by addressing the undersigned Trustees or either of them, pnst paid, shall receive prompt attcntjon

THE GREAT REMED!!
HOirSE S INDIAN TONIC:
A tafe'and sure ettre for CHILLS or AGUE li VER, in the uvjtrtctdenUd short time of
Hours—pt thousands throughout the West and can testify, who ha at been thus speedily cured Great Itemedy. I
I[jVERY
jt one who is afflicted, should be anxious to obtain THAT remedy which offers the best, quick- 1 est, and safest- cure, no matter from what source it springs overy honest man being SOUKD to EMBRACE the truth, wherever found. Therefore, the proprietor, injustice to the publii and himself, feels called upon to stated HONESTLY, a few fac's. which will establish HOUSE'S IMMAN TONIC to he the best remedy for CHILLS or AGUE and FEVER, now known. Fact lM—the article is convenient and pleasant 10 take —is refined from all grosB particles, which render other preparation so muddy, nauseous, and disagreeable to the taste and if the directions are followed, will cure ever to
ry case, with mathematical certainty, in from three five hours. Astonishing but true. Fact 2nd— I Bv its action upon the liver and other organs concerned in forming it, the bile is regulated, the morbid action induced by the cause of the disease is destroyed—fever allayed—and it will be found a powerful ocent in aseisting to remove fevers generally. Fact 3d— It gives tone to the stomach—invigorates the body—stimulates all the functions to a healthy action—and is highly useful wherever tonics are wanted. Fact ith—This Tonic has performed and is daily performing, cures in CHILLS or AGUE and FEVER, without a parallel in medicine. undersigned, thankful for the very liberal patronage he lias received from the public, and anxious to merit and receivc further favors in his line of business, would say that he is still manufacturing Wagons, Carts, Drays and all kinds of heavy vehicles at short notice, and of the very best materials the country can furnish—both Timber snd Iron—and his workmanship where known will speak for iuelf, and as it is the way he makes his living he cannot afford to do bad work nnd use bad materials. If he were a merchant, and could get work made up for Calicoes and Ribbons, without any hard knocks of his own. and could use puddle iron, such work could be sold cheap, and if such work be wanted (these hard times,) he can make and sell wagons at sixty dollars. His painting is not done in a gaudy style, (to draw the attention from a close inspection cfparts more vital to a good article.) but plain and of the best red lead or any other plain colour that may be wanted. He uses none but Shoenhurger'a best Juniata iron and if his or some other good maker's name is not found stamped on thi tire and other parts hewsre of it. He warrants hie wagons, materials, and workmanship, for two years, but not being a merchant wagon maker. he is not pre~ pared to barter off his work, out will ty he can to his friends, at his east of the two spinning wheels.
