(SOIXO TO BED, IN MISSOURI* The storv of Judge Dougln* Ivia sugfjetlfid lo the Si. L*UW Roveill*, the following adventure of a Miwouri po'iiician

The *-g«ntl«rmn nf lUinois" is nol the only gentlemm w!»oe le»s have led hi-n into em-barras-tmKnt. political friend of oars, e* quallv hnppv in manners if not in his pirty, among the Missouri constituency, found hunwslf. while canvassing last summer, f'»r Congress. in mor« p«rp,'exing predicament than the Illinois Juice.

Ther« is spot in south wes'ern pnrt of this Scite known ns the Ftery Fork of llonev Run," in which plico reside no extremely ho*pit«b!e family, whose m»n«ton. comprising only one apartment, is renowned for being never shut agtinst the traveller. The venerable host and hostess, in their one apartment, munllv enjoy the society of two sons, four daughters, sundry dogs and "niggers," anJ as nvwiy todgtrs as rrnv deem at prudent to risk the aomowhat equivocal allotment of steeping partners. On the nig it in question, our fi i**nd, after a hearty supper hain and e^s, feh himself very we.uv. wishing to he in the b-?d pointed out to him u) old lody, though the mosquitoes were trumping all sorts of wraih, and no net appeared to

The candidate ynwned, looked at hH bed, went to the door, looked at the daughters then seated himself upon the "downy." and puled off his coit —he folded his co:it-he yawned he whistled—an then I called the old lady's attention lo the fact that it would never do to sleep \n his muddy trowsers—he undm iiis vest—whistled agiin— when, suddenly, nn idea of her lodger's possible embarrassment seemed to II tslt on the old woman, and she cried— "(J ils, just turn your backs round nl the stranger gits into b»d.M

The sinngf*r Inppened lo be "married folks" himself he uukivered. nnd turned his back with true connubial indifference, ns far ns the old lidy was concerned, but. with regird to the "gals," he declares that his hilf* raised curiosity in«pired the most tormenting dreams of merunids that he ever experienced.

A M-W VIL AG KM'.

Much lias been sung nnd siid of the sagacity of the canine specics, ond of iho nmtiy useful service® they Inve been made to perform for mm but until lately wo had never heard of nny of them being pressed into the service of tho tnail nnd nvtdtf to act ns a sort of despatch post. This »s heon accomplished, however, by a very respectable gentleman and farmer living on one nf the m^ny rivers which empty into our noble «y. This gemlem-in rf.idw l^t«ncei from «n.v post town, nnd IS fond of luvtng the current

the dnv. hut for a long lime he found

news it somewhat difficult to gratify his inclination in this re*p*ct. He has, however, hit upon the fo'lowing expedient, by which he obtains jiis desires. A steamboat, which leaves our city several times during each week, pisses nlong the river within about a mile ol the olioro on which his residence situated. As the boat pnsen up the rirer he mny he seen on the hank with noble Newfoundland dog ot his side. At a given signal the dog plun ges into the water and inakcs his way rapidly to the boat as he nears it a bladJ r, containing the daily papers of our city, is thrown out, which the dog immediately seizes, nnd with a faithfulness and despatch which would •ervo as an example to many of the Govein mont mni! agents makes his way back to the shore and deposites his mail bag at his mas ter's feet. S well nccustomed has the dog becoire to this fcervice thai when the mail fail#, and no bag is thrown to him from the boat, he shows bit evident sappoin'ment and unwillingness to return without it.—Hall.
