Well I if the rrsuH of the elections in New Tork, and Michigan, are considered matters of boast, as Locofoco triumphs, then indeed, may Democracy be considered on its b»*t legs! There is snreiy no Demncrmtic g«in in New York. On the contrary, it seems to be settled, that in the popular tote, which is Teally the only test, there ia a gain on the part of Whigst As to Michigan, no one— eertaicly no Whig, ever thought of any ether result, if these then are yocr only boasts Mr. Review, your ca tae may as well be set down aa decidedly en the wane.

•J WASttu®TOJf,Nov.17,18^. Congress will^ open on Monday fortoight and in a few daya we may expect some apee^ imens of the new representation, more thatf Wluiti^reil of *bnaart stMK^r new menf bers an unprecedented large propoftioil.—. And4t ia a puzxle t«i get at thecr«d or no. lions to know whether they ore caocositea or independents the hitter opinion prevails juat oow. So very few «f the old members are left in the H«»r, aonie difficulty i» preliended in forming the Coromhlees.

The subject of the Speakership ia beg?®., nlng to be ^lacussed the candidates already named,op the part of tho aali-whig prtjt lire John W. J00689 *nd-G* Cs Drom|Oote, of Va. D- H. Lewis, of ^la., and Jiio. Camp* bell, ofS. C. The twoformer on the. part of the exclusive fnends of Mr. Von Bareo, are thought to be the most prominent, atid ire known to be hostile, -to Mr. Calhoun. Hr. Lewis will probably be dropped as phyakitlly incapable, arid Mr. Campbell may be the candidate of the Calhoun division he ait honest pentlemnn. of high character, and or an unruffled temper^ and has eerved etgb|ses^ sions In the House* The House, counting th# blank in tbe representation from Maryland,* and the necessary absentees, and vacancies, cannot consist of more than 210 members.—*. Of these, as near as we can count noaea, there will be a little over 70 Whigs, and some 34 Calhounites, with a few suspected anti-Vnn-ites from the West. Should any citiion take place with the whigs, there wiH be yet a considerable struggle for the majority. It /mist have become apparent to the Calhoun men since the late election in New York, that a Van Buren Speaker will give that party great copfidenoe in the country* and if the Triends of Mr. Calhoun are disposed, such a sekctionr can be prevented.

Some confusion is anticipated in .organizing the House, from the fact that four delegations* being about to present themselves,

In regard to' the CnblMf nominations to come before tlte Senate, Mr. Nelson insists on his nnme being sent in immediately, while some of tho doubtful gentlemen ckhject, for fear of the consequences. The President, it is said, inclines to Mr. Nelson's opinion, as he js said to be very desirous to get rid of a S»-c-retary. Mr. Tyson has been installed as 2d. Assistant Post Master General, in the plnce of Mr. Bryan, nuceremonloudly ejected. This wns the only high appointment that could be given to Mr. Tyson, independent of the voice of the Senate, which, after many forgiving*, has at length been consummated. Mr. Bryan wns a rabid L^ofoco, from Ohio, the fn-ther-in-law of Mr. Well*. M. C., who got the appointment from Mr. Tyler, assuring him hat it would give him theS ate. Alter M*. Brvan hud removed a great many whig posi-mas-fers, without increasing the Tyler stock in Ohio, Mr. Tyson tells the Prenident that the Office of Assistant Post Muster General is the eery place fi»r Aim. Mr. Robert Tyler waitski on Mr.* Bryan tit his ofiice, telling him he is authorized to request him to resign to give place to Mr. Tyson, under assurances that he shall be provided for, wheuever Congress may make appropriation for some South A meriean treaty. Mr. Bryan asks a few day* to consider. In the mean-time, a mutual friend, informs Mr. Bryan that the President before his departure for Virginia, had left with Master Bub the order for him to resign

have

not been elected according to law—from Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire and Geor-. gia. Mr. Campbell gave notice at the close of the last session, that ho would call up the matter/-'Much will depend, it i-i thought upon the bhtirse of the Clerk, in calling the rollAs the lime approaches, the question becomes moire and more disagreeable, and one that all would like to avoid. But it must be met.-— The course is a plain one Twenty-two-States have respected the law, in making their elections—a law passed by^ Congress, under the express letter and wording the Constitution. All parties should unite in the same, action, that is, to send them back. .,.

In connection with this subject, I trtky mention, that the Legislature of Georgia, now in session, will proceed immediately to- district that State. an'J.elect new membe(« to be here, at a very en 1 ly period.

There are, several Candidates for the Clericship. Mntthew St. Clnir Ularke, the jreseni worthy and active incumbent, heads the list, followed by Mr. Harris, late M. C., Mr. Gar* land, Mr. French, and others. From indications. Mr. Clarke has a fair prospect of remuining where, he is. *1

Mr. Tyler is still absent in Vif^inia.-^ Whet- he returns to submit his anrtual message to the consideration of his Cabinet,If he dove at ail, tUe hreaoh now «x*«ttfig tmwog them will be widened.
