A HATTLB WITH BEARS.—We find in a French pnper tho following narrative, taken from the Knsan (Russia) Gazette.
Tho colony of Wcshmaie-Lnba (Siberia,) hus been the scene of a sad occurrence. Three colonists, Subauicff, Bnilohorski, and Dmytreffin hunting in the great forest of Laba .captured two little boars, which they took homo with thorn. Three days had passed, and these savnge pels had began to recognize their masters, when, during the following night a terrific howling was heard in the village. The Siberian colonies, which are devoted to exiles are always surrounded with a palisade.
ai.
The colonists, nowevOf", whose curiosity got the better of the alarm, left their huts —but what was their terror at seeing the houses of Bailohorski and Dymtreff surrounded by ft band of bears, standing on their hind legs howling with rage. Tho colonist ran to arms one of them sounded the alarm bell. The ('ossacks of tho garrison mounted and formed in tho place d'armes. All the collonists, armed with musket&and axes, marched against the enemy. Tho combat began with musket shots, the bears in return tore up the hedges, and did not fear to attack the men. The contest was terrible, ana was not finished until one of tho cabins was set on fire. This conflagration drove the enemy away. Eight bears remained on the field —five ipen lost their lives, and thirty were wounded, somo of them severely. I?
THE SAINDWICH !siAN0S.~Tho Canada papers treat the seizure of these islands as tho' it were done "by authority." The Montreal Herald says, concerning the remarks of the "States Press," on this outrago "The United States have enough to do to manage their own affairs, and if they are wise will not thrust themselves into tho quarrels of others. The opinion of their press, or tho interference of their Government, is not likely to meet with attention in EngUnd, where thev are not acknowledged as the conservators of any people but their own." We vesterday attended the examination of Mr.Geo. H. Spencer's Grammar Class, and we take pleasure in saying that the performance was hiahly graiilying to us, especially when contrasted with the long, dull, and laborious process we are subjected to in acquiring a knowledge of this very useful science.
Msny ol his Scholars were only nine or ten years or age. *nd had only received one course of thirty days instructions in Grammar yet they cou.d fwrse with facility, conjugate verba in every form, and answer correctly most questions in his valuable synopsis of English Grsmmar. ,.
We do verily believe that one course.of his lec'ures will give the learner a more thorough and correct knowledge ol Grammar than a term ol pix months, in the ordinary mode of leaching.
We do, therefore, most cheerfully recommend Mr. Speucer, and his system of teaching Grammar, to the confidence ofall who may desire to give their children favorable opportunity of acauiring, in the shortest possible period, a competent knowledge of English Grammar. 1 v» 1 A. DR. MOFFAT'S LIFE PILLS ANDPHtENIX BITTERS Those who have perused, the letters above referred to will observe, that in almost every case tltcy attest the fact, that no inconvenience of any sort attends the taking of .these medicines, in ordinary cases, hut that tho patient without feeling their operation, is universally left inn stronger and better state of health than was experienced previous to being nffiicted with disease and in nil cases of acute suffering, great relief is obtnined inn few hours, and a cure is generally effected in two or three davs.
In case of FEVER of every description, snd nil billious affections, it ia unnecessary for mo lo say aught, as I believe the LIFE MEDICINRS re now universally admitted to be the most speedy and effectual cute extant in all diseases of that cfnss.
Tbe LIFE MEDICINES are also a most excellent relief in affections of the Liver and Bowels, as has been proved in hundreds of cases where patients have come forward and requested that their experience in taking them might be published for the benefit of others. In their operation in such cases, they restore the tone of the Stomach, strengthen the digestive organs, and invigorate the general functions of the whole hodv, and thus become to both sexes (for they ore perfeet Iv adnptod to each) an invaluable means of preventing disease and restoring health.

TiMES, ARE SADLl CHANSED^' N almost every walk of life, the truth of this VKJ proverb stares one full in the face. But go where we may, and in what shape or form shall we find the rimHiaosadly changed as in the practice of medicine. Docs a man catch a serious eold—he must lake dose efcatomel aW jalap—should he have afoul or bilious stomach, it will take a box of blue pills, or a
gout—o limb swelled with rlieqmniispi-a pain in ths side-a severe headache—in fact, almost every specics of disease to jvliiijli human nature is liable, however alight may be the attack, this universal poison iseniployrd to relieve suffering humanity—not only employed, but a heavy expense is actually incurred t»y the sufferer for prescribing, or ordering from ihe apothecnryv this wonderful, mineral, in oil its divsrwfied forms.
Let us hnk at the result. In New York, with a population ol 300,000, we have upwards of 7000 dcaifis per annum. In this intelligent city, then, where most people are so careful of their healths as to confine themselves dnrinsr the ali^htes'. attnek, and call in medical adfc(t)i&, we have about 25 deaths among every 1000 m* hnbitaiiis. Mark lite contrast! can point out a sinpie town in Nsw England, within 84 hour#rideol New York, containing 40W) inhabitants, where there docs nnt occur ten dcatha wiihin the year—and many of ihese are persons from 70 to 90 years of agal
The principal physician in thisplsce is Dr.——, with whom! am well acquninitd.. He uses principally vegetable medicines prepared by his own hand,— it is only in some dcrperate cases that ho employs mercury, or calomel, in any shape. -The consequence ia he is successful in the highest degree in iiia practice—and islro-.
uently called 20 miles distant.' I msy further remark, t« «contciencioit* man— for he never atteaipts ths treatment of a case that he decs not understand.
I mi fit adduce a thousand instances where the hap pv effects of my iimn medicine$, the LIFE FILLS & PHOENIX BITTERS, have been plainly manifest deepernte ensrs—to say nothing of theirtllmost uuivsty sal approval in ordinary attacks of disease, I do nut of fer my medicines to the public ss infallible—or as poasessingany mysi«rious ingredients—I offer them solely rs good vegetable preparation*, which I solemnly believe will by a feir trial, conquer mos of the prevalentdiseases of the day. 1 lisve in my office, at 375 Broadway, indubitable proofs of this fsoi Thoasonds of my fellow citizens, in all paris of the Union have voluntas* rily sent me statements fit* most flattering, of their experience in the use «f tho L1FK riLLS Sc PIICENIX BlTTKRSmany casea in thia city and elsewhere, I have personally attended j—all which have proved favovblc to my previously formed opinion, that ii^njne coses out of let# among tho ordinary disesses which our phtsicinns universally treat with preparations Irom calomel and other minerals—a good vegrtaU* medicine leonhl be far prefer able.
One* word, then, of advice. The LIFE PILLS & PH0SN1X BITTERS are solely vegetsblc. In their operation, tbey act powerfully upon lie secret iona, and thus lend 10 equalise the distribution orcirculation of the blood throughout the system—removing therefrom all bad humors, and restoring even to the complexion of :hc invalid a pleasing glow of health, which he orterworda retains. There are many young persons of sedentsry occupations, psrlicularly females, who are often afflicted With an oppression of the internal organs— which is generally ths effect cf an unequsl distribution of the blood, consequent on their employment. Such sflliriions, though slight in themselves, too often, by insensible degrees, loy the foundations of turborcles in the lungs, and other maladies, which show themselves only when arrived at. an incurable stage. All who vslue health, will take warning from signs 1iks these, and never rest till the equilibrium be restored.— It is by culpsble neglect in suicli slight esses, that many good coneiiiuiions are ruined, and many nervous and pulmonary complsints brought on embitter existence.
