WHIG COUSTY MEETING. By notice in
a oot
her column it will be seen
that a Whig Meeting will be held on Saturday (thia afternoon) at the Court-House, for the purpose of selecting tho names of three persons to represent Vigo County in the 'legislature. .mMuim'Mt 1
The Hon. R. W.
homwom is
expected to
be present, and address his fellow-citizens assembled after the business of the Meeting
T1IK REPLYt
In our pepof of last week we published a communication from S. B. Gookims—and atated that our columns should be open to any one aggrieved, for reply. Tl»e Editor of the .Express avails himself of our offer, and requests that we should copy a certain article from bis columns. We do so, in compliance with his request, although we are unable lo tee tbe precise connexion of many portions of the Editor's reply, with any thing contained io the communication of Mr. Gooxws.
If the reply contained nothing but matter ^sfrictly applicable to the supposed nggrievonce, it would not bccome us to say a word.
But we cannot avoid the belief that the Editor has availed himself of the opportunity to make some cuts and thrusts in more dftections than one. The Whigi, arid the Whig cause. The best established principles of the Whig party, aro oil made to sufibr by definitions and comparisons which wo do not think the necessity of tho case required.
As to the Whig*, and Whig affairs of Vigo* County, about which the Editor says a good deal, all is straight, so far as we know. There is not one solitary Whig principle* about -which there is the* slightest difference of opinlion. There is but one unbroken phalanx ^tmong the Whigs of Vigo so far as principles are concerned. Of men, there may possibly be a slight difforonc© in sentiment—but of I measures there is none.
FATAL RENCONTRE.
Tbe Vicksburg and Notches (iapers mention the death of Dr. Jambs Hagan,Edifor of the Vicksbuig Sentinel. Dr. Magan was killed by Dawel VV. Adams in a scuffle which took place in the street on ihe 7th inst. In the rencontre both, it appears, fell to the ground, and in that position Dr. Hagan was shot by Adams in the neck, with a pockot pistol.
Mr. D. W. AdntrtiVffr Wof Judge Geo. Adams, of Jackson. Both father and son, as well as Dr. Ilagan, were all ardent locofoC09.
The latter was the great champion of Repudiation, while Judge Adams aod son waro opposed to that principle* The cause of the difficulty, was said to bean editorial article in the Sontinel, reflecting upon the character of Judge Geo. Adams. .J£p?»
FURTHER OF THE SANDWICH ISLANDS An intelligent gentleman residing in the Sandwich Islands, writing to the Boston At[fas, confirms the recent accounts of the [British usurpations. He says the American knd the French consul visited the British ship, [according to custom, on her arrival, but were reated with marked contempt, and not received with the customary honors.*
The Missionaries, it appears, persuaded ihe ins to yield to the demanded recognition of O ,A impeon. mm -Jr z*** y*-*

Will our Whig friends of Vigo, and other counties, remember the importance of the coming election. A Governor, Lieut. Governor a member of Congress a Senator and Representatives of our own Legislature, are to be elected. Let it be remembered, that for all these important offices our Locofoco opponents have 'cheir candidates in the field. All at work and in full training. Let no supinencas on our part occasion a defeat, when we bave decided majorities, and may easily elect good Whigs to each important office.
•V. 'J BUNKER HILL. Great preparations have been for some time in train for celebrating the anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill, aa well as the completion of the Monument erected on the spot. The Celebration was to take place on the 17th inst., that being the anniversary of tbe Battle. From the exhibition of arrangements some time in a train of preparation, we should expect to hoar of the largest collection of people, around and about Bunker Hill, ever assembled on any similar occasion in the United States. The whole city of Boaton has been in a manner summoned to attend. Soldiers ond citizens of Boston—of the adjoining towns and Statea Were expected to be present, and part in the ceremonies. The President of the United States with tVre heads of Departments were to be in attendance. And by no means least in the catalogue of attractions, Daniel Webster, was to deliver an oration on the occasion.
Among the most important events in the annals of our Revolution was. the Battle of Bunker Hill. It waa (ought on the 17th of June 1775, and the victory achieved on that day, may be considered one of the causes contributing largely to our independence.-— The recollections and associations connected* with the time and place will render the ceremonies of the day altogether interesting. By our next we may be able to lay before our readers a full account of the proceedings aa they actually took place on the occasion,
IRELAND A REPEAL.
See an interesting article on our fourth page, from the Indiana Journal, relating to affairs of Irelind. It is thought the time has come to speak and act for Ireland. She aaks for the dissolution of a union whose terms she says England has violated. She desires the privilege to govern herself. She wishes the restoration of a National Parliament—and that brought about by lawful, peaceful, constitutional means. This subject is now being much agitated, and meetings are stroogly recommended with the view of the more formal expression of our sympathies favorable to the cause of liberty.
We copy the following paragraph from the Richmond'Compiler—a strictly neutral and impartial paper. It is gratifying evidence of the progess Of political opinion:—

be indulged, but will
be expected promptly to pay their dues. This call it not made as mere matter of bourse but in earnest—and it hoped will be attended to promptly. We cannot furnish reading to others without being paid. It is unreasonable, and morally wrong to expect it Our capital in business is made up of a great number of smalt sums—and each individual who delaya payment is doing us an injury. Let each put the question to himself—and as he would wish to be done by, for bis labor, ao let him consider the necessity of doing to us, for the labor we give. Subscribers and Patrons in towo—tho» who receive their papers by noail—-as well as those supplied in our box, or by Packets, must one and all consider themselves applied to by this notice.
•U«UST~ ELECTION.
Bank.—There is a decided
change of popular feeling in favor of a National Bank. We believe a majority of the people were for such an institution in 1840, and thought they expressed themselves so in their votes. Had the whig* of thia State taken a decided stand for such an institution, we should have had it now. Their evanoo of the question made tbe loophole through which the bill establishing a Bank was lost. The tendency of the public sentiment is gratifying though there is no hope that it will accomplish any thing during the present administration. What the chance may be after that, we shall see. •#%.. It aras my intention to have replkd, tlfis week, to Mr. Dowling's *e&nd page of the last Express and with thai vWlr I called upon the Editor of the.Cburier, where I lo»med that one newspaper did not afford sufficient facilities for hisr vast genius to display Itself and thai he had monopoUzed both. When I learned the preposterous pretext upon which Mr. D. had set up his claim to this «ocuad edition, my admiration of bis gei»iu« gave place# in aome measnre, to surprise at the grounds of his extraordinary demand This demand is based, as I am informed, upon two groundsone is, the tender of his columns, made by the Editor of the Courier, in his notice of my communication, for answer or reply,—4he other, tbat it waa doe to him from ilte fact the Courier bad published my communication, and its readers should therefore hear him injpeply. Now, it is well understoodlhat when an Editor offers lu's col* um ns, the ofier is intended to extern! to those who have not such facilities, and not those who have. As to the other reason, I will judge him oot of his own mouth.* .Why does he not publish my commuuiquion 1 How many or the readers of tbe Express who do not take both papers, will see that If he objects that he has not been requested, to the end tbat th* monopoly may oot be all 00 one side, I make the request now. I have no niPliner of objection that his remarks should be published entire by every paper the district for tbe poison it contains will find its own antidote in the article itself but I suppose such Editors as should choose to publish his remarks, will have a sufficiently nice sense of justice to publish, mine also. The object ot* Mr. Dowling, in this monopoly, doubtless is to keep back a reply, but on that subject I have this to say. '1 his controversy has hot been of my seeking. I was provoked into it much against my will. But I will sot be driven from the field by such expedients. 1 will therefore notify the public, that what is left of me, after the awful visitation from tbe last express will be in order to be heard, in next weeks Courier* if space and opportunity permit.
Respectfully B. GOOK1NS.

THE PROGRESS OF THE ACTING PRESIDENT.—Mr. Tyler appears to have fared no better in his reception at New York than in his memorable appearance in this city. There was, of course, a large number of pdople anxious to see what sort of a man Captain Tyler looked like, and ready to have a holiday, but the Tribune thinks there were hardly as many people out as there would have been to see a colored gentleman hung.
There was, we learn from the Tribune, about half a turnout of Military, looking well, as usual, and a very good .'showing' of the Irish Repealers, wbo rallied rather to exhibit their strength than from any great love for *the occasion.* The afiuir is represented to have been cold and dull enough. The released clerks from the Post Office and tho always on hand Custom house people, appear to have been as unfortunate in their attempts to greet the Captain with an "enthusiastic checr," ns their compatriots in this city. The Courier & Enquirer sayst—• "When Mr. Tyler landed at Castle Garden there were not five voices to greet him, and at he entered the Western passage way there were absolutely but three men who lifted their solitary voices and even that was an imprudence on their part which rendered the mortification more conspicuous, for we are sorrylo say that the trio of cheers was reFponded to by double the number of hisses not, we hope, hisses for Mr. Tyler, but intended merely to rebuke the impolicy of aUewtping any thing like a greeting of the kind, since there were so few who would join it. Soil wiu^or worse, when he reached the crowd in the Bowling Green—a few faint and, scarcely audible cheers were answered promptly by more than a hundred groans. Along Broadway, as the procession threaded through the masses, scarcely a single voice raised. At Howard's Hotel, where the ladies of the acting President's party had arrived before the procession pawed, there was considerable, hut irnmmi fo tia that tkm ImImm
