JEFFERSON'S BIRTH DAY. The one hundredth anniversary of JBFFER•oa'a birth-day was celebrated in this place, with considerable show and ceremony on Monday last. An oration was delivered in the Court*House by S. G. DODGE, Esq., to a large audience. The scene was enlivened by (be presence of Capt. HOOK'S company of Infamry, and the Terre-Haute Band. A dinner was also served up on the occasion, by Mr. SCOUTOK, at the Broadway House. An entertainment, to which some sixty or seventy gentlemen sat down. qoii, MACKENZIE.
Having given on several occasions some *****«xtractsof the testimony before the Court of Inquiry* as well as the Court Martial in the
MACKENZIE case, we have thought it right to publish at length the defence of Capt. MACKENZIE as laid before the Court Martial at the close of the proceedings in the case.
Our readers will of course recollect the circumstances which have lately made so much oxcitement in relation to tho brig Somera. That a mutiny was attempted on board this vessel of war on the high seas and three of the ringleaders, Spencer, Cromwell, and Smalli promptly executed by order of the commander, Capt. MACKENZIE. For which transaction the Commander was brought before a Court of Inquiry immediately on his
return to the Unitod States—and by that Court, fully tnd entirely acquitted of all censure or blame. And that at his own request a Court Martial was instituted by the Navy Department to try the Commander upon certain charges to be preferred against him.
At the close of the hearing before this Ibourt, Capt. MACKENZIE through his counsel, delivered at length his defence, for his conduet in directing the execution of the principal mutineers* The whole affair was so tragical—so awful in all its bearings, consequonces and results, as to excite the deepest interest in the whole community. The defence which will be found in our paper to-day, commencing on the first page, was delivered to the Court before a crowded assembly of ladies and gentlemen. It is of a character to inter' *f est almost every description of readers—and at the sacrifice of excluding modi miscellaneous matter we have concluded to lay the whole at once before the public-

MIIiLERISM.
We find a few of our exebangbs ittdul^ng in some little speculation, or at least, in extracting, and publishing articles, on the sub* ject of the strange doctrine taught by MILLSR as, well as the appearances of extraordinary signs in the heavens, and carious prophecyiog of little children dec. dec. in relation to snow storms, and other wondjers Ity which this world is soon to be brought to an end.f 'Generally we suppose-these extracts are made more in the spirit of ridecule than any thing else.— WFE doubt much about the propriety of thus laying before the community these crude and foolish speculations of babies, large or small, who, so far as we know, have no of authority, either divine or human, sacred or .profane, to make predictions for all the rest of the world besides.— On the contrary, we do think it is better, not even jo jest, to parade these' miserable pieces of attempted wisdom and forebodings before the public. Much barm we are satisfied has, and may result from such a course. There are always people to believe any thing, and therefore to make themselves and neighbors, miserable and unhappy—instead of devoting the precious hours, bestowed upon them by a kind Providence, to provide better food for the mind, as well as good and wholesome
provisions for the body.

PENNSYLVANIA DISTRICT BILL.—The Legislature of Pennsylvania has at last brought itself to the sticking point, so far as to pass a law for Congressional Districts, sufficiently gerrymandering in its character to meet the approbation of the modest Governor PoaTBR.
This bill is so very liberal in its provisions as to give the Whigs of that great State about/our representatives in the Congress of the tJnited States. We suppose this hidebound, blood-thirsty, Whig-killing locofoco Gov. PORTER, will now be able to take a little sleep after his labors. His digestion may perhaps be attended with /ewer symptoms of dyspepsia* «*Two bills did this Governor veto —bills loo, of a Locofoco House—because Whigs enough were jxot^ sacrificed to please his Locofoco Excellency's locofoco taste.
Col. HILL CASTER is the Whig candidate for Congress in opposition to H. A. WISE.— Col. C. is said to be a talented, fir(#and uncompromising Whig.
The Galveston Times intimates tfiat tft'e British Government is offering to mediate bo tween Texas and Mexico, and procure the acknowledgment of the independence of the former on condition that slavery be abolished in the Republic.
THE TEXAS PRISONERS. It is said that the reports which have been published of the escape of the Texians taken prisoners at Mier, are not credited by the Houston papers. The report however is probably correct, as we find the following in the New Orleans Bulletin of March 25th ia. »»THE TEXAS PRISONERS.—Accounts from "Metamorns to the 19th ult, received yester**day by the schooner Zerviah, establish beuyond any doubt, that the Texans captured "at Mier, have risen upon the guard and e*"caped. The particulars are thus given by a "gentleman with whom we have conversed: "—The glorious news is, that the whole body "of the lexian prisoners (except Col. FISHER "and his staff") have made their escape. On "their arrival at Salado, they rose upon and "disarmed the Mexican guard* 800 strong, "and quiedy departed in the direction of the "north-east. The whole country was im"mediately up in arms sod in pursuit but as "the TexUna were well provided with musk«ets and ammunition, there was little danger, «even if they were overtaken, of the fugitives "being arrested, as the raocberos were too "timid to attack should they come op with them—sod besides the Tfexiaos had too much the start to be overtaken by infantry. "Gen. AKTODA was raving oo the occasion, "and threw into prison ttree Texan boys "who were captured at Mier, and woo had "been Tunning at large in Mctamores. All "parties allowed that this was pitiful revenge"Salado is about 90 leagues beyood SaJtiilo, "oo the toad to San Louts de Pbrtoat, and in "a vary mountainous country. NEW ORLEANS MARKET, March 25,1843. The transaction* in Western Produce has been on a limited scale. The Wabash, Mississippi and tbeir tributaries, having remained closed by ice much beyond tits usual time of their general break up, we are left with an unusual small stock of produce, «nd as a matter of course, the result is an advance in the prices of some articles.
F&OCR.—The stock is much less than we have EVER knew at this season, and we hear of some sales since our last at S3 37, $3 50 and even as high as 3 Sit. We quota sales yesterday at $3 50.
Poax..—The stock in inspection is very small. The arrivals from the Ohio have been pretty Urge, much of which (or reshipment. Sales of Mess have been made this week at #7 36 to $7 50 but most holders ask more M. O. #6 50, Prime none in market.
LARD.—The stock is light and a strictlv prime article would command 5icts to embrace all quantities. We place our figures at to 51.
BACON.—Sides are in demand at 3$ to 3 50 Hams are plenty at 41 to 5 cts Shoulders 8 to Si—demand. Bar.—Mesa $775, Prime $5 to 5 85—demand very limited.
WHISXXT —Continues in fair demand at iSi cts. Co*!*.—Wo notice no change in the price of corn. The stock is much reduced, and a good demand exists lor the article. We place our figures at 38 a 33 cts.
OATS.—Are selling at 15 a 16 cts in bulk, and 80 a 81 cts in sacks. The stock is good and demand fair. HAT—Western continues at §18 a $13 per ton, with a fair Mock and moderate demand. There is no eastern of consequence in market.
