POLITICAL.
the Washington correspondent of the New York Courier and Eoquiror, under the date of August 29, 1842, take® the following very •jtwt view of the present position of the Whig party .in Congress: 0z$ »*lt is not saying more than the fact will warrant to assert, that never, at any period ,4 of the history of the Whig party, was it finkgj together by bonds so firm, ties so strong, and sympathies so deep and sincere, as those by which it is bound nt this present moment.
'tfie events of the lust few days,"threatening, as for a season they did, the total distnemberment and disruption of that party, late so compact and so triumphant, have but consoiidated and rivetted still more fast its many bonds of union. The passage by an ample •majority (now in both Houses) of the bill to repeal the twenty per cent, clause of the Distribution law, has coucilated the feelings and brought back the wavering affections of many of our Western friends, who thought they saw in the Iato retrograde movements of the majority in Congress an evidence that the principle of Distribtttion was to be surrendered for ever. "They &re satisfied now that no such design existed, and-that the Whigs will nev-r abandon that principle so long as a sptrk of vitality exists-amongst them*
Reviewing the nature as well as the amount of business transacted by this Con* gress, it may well be said that at no previous session of the National Legislature has a more earnost and constant desire been manifested to meet the wants of the nation in every department. We may at an early day take occasion to recur to the measures which industry, perseverance, and consummate talent have carried through during this session, in the face of greater difficulties than ever before harassed patriotic majority.—North American.
TUE GLORIOUS WIIIGS OF CONGRESS. We hardly know which most to laud, the whigs who icould no! succumb to a contemptible usurper, or they who have triumphed over themselves to save the country. Both have our unqualified and lasting admiration, and the blessed part of it is, that neither will blame the other, and that all separate in the most porfoct fellowship, with a common deep and most satisfactory conviction, that the breaker^ are safely passed, and the great whig shift is filling Iter siiis ag iin for a prosperous voyage.
Such a seji of trouble, raised by a demon at the helm, was never passed through by a political party of this country, and never before did the wisdom of a party, in an anxious hour, so gloriously triumph. It was for the country, and the country alone, that so large a portion of the whigs of CopgreSs stifled their rescntmen's, and swallowed tneir indignation, holding it to bo gratified on a more At occasion, and in a more propitious hour while they who could not yield to such outrage on the Government, will stand no less approved, inasmuch as their submission was not necessa* ry to attain the desired end.~JVoc Whig.
RHODE ISLAND AFFAIRS.—The Providence Chroniclo says—"A letter catpesfeihe Post Office on Thursday morning mmi, New Hampshire, directed to "Samuel Ward King, acting Governor of Rhode Island." It will be returned, we understand, unopened.
The letter, wo suppose, is froit^ Gov- Hat4jard, of New Hampshire, and contains his treasons for refusing to give up Mr. Dofr, of* the requisition of Gov. King, of Rhode Island!
The Supremo Court of Rhode Island is now in session in JSfewport, and it i9 expected tho trial, for treason against the Dorrites will before it. Jfi

There is a great deal of truth in the following remarks: "If we could always follow to their sources the leading events of the world, how much of what is deemed greatness and glory, to say nothing of sorrow rtnd evil, might not be traced to impure springs: how much to the spirit of envy alone, which spreads its poisoning influence through the whole frame of society. In love, in commerce, in all the subordinate pursuits of life, its power is constantly seen its fur extended 8way is exhibited in the countenances of thousands. It shines through the smile of a courtier, and is as little concealed by the nsAumed stornnnss of the soldier, hs by the vapid and unmeaning coldness affoctod by the tuan of fusliion. In tvar, in politics, and in government of empires, its influence is felt. Plow often are men of merit arrested in mid career, by the Jealousy of their superiors how often are the most gifted individuals prevented, by the same cause, from serving their country in situations in which their talents might be of the greatest advantage while feehie and incapable men are committing, perhaps, irremediable fol\ies."-Nantuckel rlndr.
RUTA BAGA FOR COWS. Ouo of tfee mot serious objections to the culture of tho turnip, especially in dairy districts, is tho unpleasant flavor which this root communicates to milk and butler, and various means have been proposed to prevent these disagreeabl^results. One of the most successful that we have tried, has been feeding the roots immediately after milking, so as to have as long a time as tjossible intervene between the feeding ana the milking. In a late numbor of the Cabinet, We find a letter from Samuel West, of Chester, Ph., describing his mode of feeding, which, while it is sonwwhat similar to ours, is said to totally obviateall tasto of tho turnip. H« states also that the same method is applicable to garlic, so common and disagreeable in some parts of the United States. "After a sufficiency of first-rote uptah hay, 1 allow to each cow about half a bushel, of ruta-baga turnips finely cut up always remembering to strip the cows clear of milk iefort feeding tciik tie turnip, and «n tM* moming feeding with a different kind of food, viz qui hay, with a little Indian meal, or other mill-feed. By this process there will be no iaste of the turnip, either in the mOk.or but ter, so objectionable to many and by it you will have a full flow of milk from your cows, and butter of a fine, rich, spring-like quality seldom obtained in the winter season."

or domestic practice, SQ absolutely, imusediaielv. and permanently efficacious in this prevalent and stuiate malady, as Moffat* celebrated sod tongeaiabItshed life pilleand phcenix bittern. Extraoidisaay sad renowned aa are their efleetft upon diseases iagenerel, in Fever and Ague, and all Billiotis AffscUonstbey are more so because, in these they are as infallible as any human means can be. This has been prosed in more than ten thousand cases, nor is there anl in which tbey have faded, or reasonably can fail, #i taken in striet accordance with the directions here subjoined, and which are also given in M«&l's Medical Manual and Good Samaritan. Bet to ensure invariable success, these must be rigidly followed.
Fever and Ague, in sill its four teadim species, is a peculiar periodica! disease, and Dr. Moffat haa fully tablisbed the important discovery that its cure can never be efieoed with precision ana certainty, except by a periodical administration ot a proper remedy, in connection with tbespecific poms of one of ibe ingredients in bismedicines, is the secret of his invariable triumph, while all other practitioners eitber entirely fail or only temporarily succeed, were with the very beat remedies that were known. Anetus, or Ague is either Quotidian, or daily Tertian, or third-day: Quartan, or fourth-day Erratic, sr sometimes one Of these periods and sometiipes another, or it is Complicated, by taking these periods in succession, and tifen running into intermittent fever of a more malignant character. But it is a remarkable foct, however mysterious sad unaccountable it may appear, that each and all of these species of Ague, have a fourteenth-day crisis, in which they may be cured with certainty, tart hy neglecting which they can only be cured by chance. Dr. Mo&t's directions for taking the medicines in this disease, are therefore these:—First, take two of the Life Pills at bed time, and next morning before breakfast a lull wine glass of the Phcenix Bitters in sboat the same quantity of water, and half a wine glassmore in a full wine glass of water, about half an hour before each meal during the day. On the second night take three pills ami the bitters ss before on the third night four pills and th« bitten as before, and continue taking four pills every night lor three .nights more, with the-bitters during the Hay. On or berore the seventh day, the Ague will seem to be entirely cured, and the patient will feel well, hungry, and hearty, but he must nevertheless continue to take the bitters ss before prescribed, until and on the fourteenth day{with two pilw
every night alter the seventh day. Heiwill then, and nM until then, with positive and invariable certainty, be permanently cured, not only of Fever and Ague but of whatever billious and liver affections it may have superinduced or even in any way connected. If, however, the patient should by any neglect, or undue confidence in restored health, omit to take the Phcsnix Bitters in the full quantities prescribed at least three times on the^fourteenth day, Dr. Moflhl must not be blamed if the disease should return, scd the patient should learn wisdom from slffliction, snd go through snotber course of the medicines for fortnight longer. Obeying these instructions, however^ he wilt be so thoroughly cured, that he may bid defiance to the disease, however unhealthy may bo his location or prevalent the malady around him. For children between seven and fourteen jrears of age, half of the *bove quantities of the medicines will suffice lor founger children, a quarter of those quantities, to be increased or diminished in proportion as the age varies from advanced childhood to infancy. For very young children, small quantities of the bitters only will alone be necessary.
This treatment," with these supremely effecitial "Life Medicines,?1 has been perfectly triumphant in the worst regions of the Southern and Western country, and a* round the northern lakes, where the malady preVsils with the universality of an epidemic, and the demand for this sovereign remedy has been far greater than the supply. Dr. Moffat's Agents, however, are now well furnished, and will make every effort to send this advertisement into ^he most afflicted districts- Voluntary and iealously grateful testimonials are received at the proprietor office in New York, by every mail in incredible numbers, to the absolute efficacy of these astonishing medicines, not only in Fever snd Ague,.other intermitent levers, liver and billious affections, and derangements of the digestive functions generally, but also in chronic and inflammatory rheumatism, costiveness, pains in the side and limps, eruptions of the skin, scrofula, piles, worms, scurvy, and a host of other com-

laints, for the enre of which, these Vegetable Life are so pre-eminently renowned throughout the United States. Knowing, however that many of these diseases, as well as a most fatal undermining of the general health are occasioncd by Fever snd Ague. Dr. Moffat, in his advertisements, invites the special at tention ol the public to the absolute ascendency sf his medicines over this malady, the fountain head of so many others. He has only to add that the Life Medicines are agreeable and invigorating in their operations, require neither confinement nor change of diot, and haveacquired the reputation they have Ions possessed, not by the usual artificial efforts, but solely by their invariable and extensive usefulness.
