PTS SUBMARINE BATTER*. trnnooncaraeat, published in ibenews* papers last Saturday, (tat at half post fire o* clock P. M. that day .there would be a trittl of Colt's SubmarineButtery, on the Potomac near th&Ar»enal, drew an immeaseconcouree of- spectators to the coatiguous wharves, shores, And buildings, which comma tided an eligible view of the vessel, which was moored '-about one hundred and fifty yards from the shore, and underneath which at the bottom of the river, was placed the.case of combustible to Wow the devoted vessel "sky high." At about half past fire o'clock the fine steamer 'Sidney, having on board the President of #he

United States, the Heads-of Departments, the Mayor of Washington, and many other dbtingubhed citizens, passed -down the river by the Arsenal, to h£f appointed station*-—. "V -The President was saluted by the Marines at sithe Arsenal soon after which, the signal gun "?*being fired, the vessel doomed for destruction blew up. The explosion was .grand beyond jdescription.' An immense body of water, tlwilh bricks .and fragments of the vessel, rose .*perpendicularly to a great height, and then descended into the water, at a short distance jfrom where the vessel was stationed but the vessel had suddenly disappeared amidst "the

V*j wreck of matter," leaving no trace behind! The scene was indeed a grand and imposing *"J one. The trial appeared to Us lobe complete* \y successful. In about twenty seconds after the signnl gun was fired, Mr.. Cblt applied his

T"*powerful

apparatus, (placed five miles distant

near Alexandria,) and. in the twinkling of an eye, the vessel entirely disappeared. Every one present, of the vast multitudes assembled in steamboats, carriages, on horseback, and on foot, (amounting, we should think, to no less than six or eight thousand spectators,) I seemed to be highly gratified with the imposing grandeur of the scene, and to regard the experiment as eminently successful. nflNWe have never witnessed so complete,

powerful, and singular an illustration of the Range No. seven (7) ibrce of gunpowder, united with the power of science. The arrangements seemed to have been admirably planned and executed—not the least disappointment or failure to produce the tremendous and mighty effect which was promised, precisely in fhe manner and at the time proposed. It is gratifying that no accident of uny kind occurred, during, or in consequence of the exploiion. The weather was fine, and* a good opportunity was afforded for everyone tosed the great nnd wonderful experi ment.—iVa/tonar Intelligencer.

RIGHT END UP.

A gentleman, a few days-since, called updn an old lady, not a mile from James street in this village—When upon walking into the pnrlor, his notice was arrested by one of the ,, portmit, which

The old lady was right, she defined tho President's position exactly. The presidential moantebank is on his head, between the parties, with too little dexterity to right him* solf into either.—Roman Citixen.

CURE FOR SUM.HKR COMPLAINT. BLACKB&FIRY S*RUP.—We are indebted to a IViend for the following receipe for making Blackbury Syrup. This Syrup is said to be almost specific for the summer complaint. In 1832 it was successful in more than one case of CMera. The fruit is now in market, and the preseut time is the proper time to make it.

You will save many bitter tears by publishing the above in your valuable paper. From ft teaspoon full to a wine glass according to the age of the patient, till releived, is to be given. may tsboil practice, but it will save life.—jWoymV/e Eagle.

RKMBDY FOR IIVDROPHOBU.—Dr. iHelier, fnombor of the Royal Academy of Medicine, Paris, lately communicated to hit society, that in Greece it is a practice to observe t)ie tongues of thoso who have been bitten by dogs, because at the end of eight or nine days there appears on eaoh side of the tongue, and near the upper part, postules, called lysses by the Greeks. These postules contain the whole rabid ma'ter, add immediately they are cut out and the wotind causwrized, which prevents hydrophobia.

Did you ever know the spavin cut off from a horse If not, I can inform you that, a few years sinco, one of my carnage horses was badly spavined, so much so as to be almost useless* 1 had him thrown then cut lately over the spavined boue in a sharp anglC(tfRB^iii»feelcd UdftE« until the boo* was exposed. I then tlien took a chisel, and, with a blow or two from a mallet, 1 toon cut off the bone. The horse soon recovered, li has now been four years since, and not the least morn of the disease."—-4/-banjf
