Correspondence of Ike Alexandria Giselle LAND OFFICE REPORT. WASHINGTON, DEC. 31, 1841

The Secretary of the Treasury submitted to the Senate, on Monday last, an interesting report, from the new Commissioner of the General Land office, in relation to the operations and general condition of that branch of the public service, during the past year. We have seldom read any public paper with the same degree of interest with which we perused this report, nor is it too much to *ay that we have never before seen any document, emanating from a Public Department, exhibiting so rich a variety of useful, scientific and interesting matter. The different topics embraced in the operations of the whole Land system, are appropriately reduced under separate heads, and each is discussed in a clear practical and concise style. The suggestions contained in thisdocument.will, we trust, commend themselves to the earnest consideration of Congress they arewthe result of the most diligent research on the part of Judge Huntington, who has only been at the head of this

Department since July last, and bespeaks his peculiar fitness for the complicated duties of an office which he fills with such signal ability. and so far, with equal success. He observes, with much truth, under the head of general duties, that the number of Patents issued, within a given time, is, by no means, a just criterion by which to estimate the extent and import mce of the complicated labors performed by the Department. If such a standard were-allowed, the grossest imposition could be practised on Congress and the country by constituting every private parlor in this city a Beaureau for the performance of this duty, and thus swelling out the Report of Patents issued to an extent altogether disproportioned to the other more important branches of the Land Office service.

The space which the new Commissioner devotes to the Polish exiles is well occupied.— Congress will, no doubt, respond to the benevolent appeal which he so eloquently makes in their behalf.

CORRESPONDENCE OF THE AMERICAN. WASHINGTON, Jan. 1st 1842—Evening. The first, of January has passed offin Washington as many others have before it, with the repetition of the scene so common at the White House, and which forms the peculiar attraction of the city at the commencement of every year. The attendance upon the Levee was very large,—much jnore so than 1 have known it for some years past,— but the scene was the old one over again of visiting the

President, taking him by the hand, promenading the East Room, seeing and being seen, and so on through the three hours, from twelve to three o'clock,—selected for the reception of guests.

Mr. ADAMsandMrs MADISON also received their friendsat their own dwellings. A great number of strangers and ?itizens called upon each of these distinguished persons, one of the most distinguished of our American Presidents and perhaps the most remarkable lady, all things considered, ever connected with the White House.

The Temperance celebration here to-day was a grand affair. A procession was formed in the morning with music, banners, badges and other insignia of the societies represented and the cause of Temperance. Addresses were made, and the day was thus rendered delightfully pleasant. The weather has been as mild as Spring through the day and as pleasant as it coufel be ior the several festivities.,

The Proprietors of most of the Kail Koaa Companies^ the country had a meeting this afternoon ii the Post Office Deparment. They came here Vy invitation of the Post Master General, an were called in the hope that something m\ht be done to facilitate the mail arrangements.v It is doubtful whether any thing can be adtomplished.
