From Oougt*f Journal of Banking GOLD AMD SILVER.
A member of Gongrea* who has mixed much with the people of one of the States, gives it aa hia opinion that one of UM principal obeticals to a bank reform ia the erroneoua opinion entertained by many, of rhe quantity of gold and silver in the world. He haa re* queeted oa, and in fact almost exac'sd a promise from tw, to say something In every number of our Journal, which May tend to enlighten men's minds on this subject, it shall receive a due degree of attention.
We begin to day with Mr. GaUatinls estimate ol the
Ktnth?
nf gold and silver in Europe and America, a work published by him in 1131, entitled 'Consideratione en the Currency and Banking System of the United State*,' he estimates the amount of the precious metals in theae two quarter* of the world between four thousand and five thouaand million dollars. This it will be reooUected, was ten years ago. The amount has since been considerably increaacd aa the mint® have annually produced million* and the demand for the nhina trade haa been greatly deminiahed.
Taking the medium, however, of the twosum*stated by Mr, Gallatin, namely—four thousand five hundred million* of dollar*, ana aupposing the population of Europe and America to be two hundred and aeventy* oeven million, it will amount to sixteen dollars and upward* for every man woman, and child, on the two continent*. The same gentleman estimates the whole amount of'turrency in the United State* in 1836, pa* per and specie together. at oaly aix doilara a J»a4»
Bat the autyect may be preeented in a stronger light Tak« ha, man for man, and we are the richeet people in the world, With the exception 'of the English, the Hollander*, and the Belgiana. Where the natural order of cause and eflhet la not inverted, the richer a country, the greater in proportion to population will he the amount of gold and ml ver that will flow into it. Ii a day* labor in America will prodacea bush of wheat and in Poland only one tenth of a bushel, it ia evident that America must have a much greater amount than Ptoland of surplus produce wherewith to purchase the
or whatever else may be deeired. It
not too much say. that if the natural laws had not interfered with, the United States would have, in proportion to population, four, five, aix, seven, yea, eignt lime* as much gold and silver aa many ol the countriea of Europe. Take it at only doable of the average for the population of the two oontinonta, and it will amount to thirty dollar* head or to five hun* dred and fourteen millions. Thia would sive us the one ninth part of the stock of gold and silver in Europe ami America, while oar population iabut one sixteenth but for the reaaonsaireadv slated, under a natural order of things, we shoald nave man for man a much larger portion of the precioua metals, than folia to the lot of most coantrtee of Eutupe.
Suppose however we had bat the average of sixteen dollar* a head. This would amount to two hundred •ad fifty -seven millions.
On two points do people (that ia some people) capitally err- First in regard to the quantity of cold and aitver in the world.—This is mueh greater than tbey imagine it to be. Next in regard to the amount required lor oommtrdal purpooaa. Thia is much smaller than they suppose it to be. Under a sound money, a sound credit, and sound banking are am, ton doilara a head would probably he amply sufficient in the United States.

The Roohester Democrat, commenting opon the MSSS which have influenced the reoent elections in favor .»f the Locoiocoe, and rebuking their premature exultation, states the ease oorrectly, and exhibits the richt spirit. These eJecijooe have weal ted in fevorof the Opposition by Whig defcalt. They had started from Schloeser at 9 o'clock, intending to cross over to Hudson^ Tavern, two miles above Chippewa. Shortly after they left the shore, cries from the river were heard at Field's Tovern, near by, but excited no attention, aiifimilar noises are very'common in quarter from boatmen passing to and fro. No dbspicion of the accident arose until Thursday, when evidence of the fate of the boat and her crew was presented in the fragments found in the eddy below the Falls. It is supposed that the boat was struck by a squall, and be'ng heavily landed, sunk—the men on hoard being swept away bv the relentlesscarrent down the American rapids, and over the frightful precipice below! The names of the two .were Jehiel D. Kinney, John York, and the ovher was a stranger who had merely taken passage to Canada,
