CUMBERLAND ROAD.

The following resolutions were voted by meeting vf ibe citizens of Fayette, and we do believe that it Would be proper for the citisensof thia county and Clark to do likewise. The National Road moat be finished, and if tboee immediately intercated in its com pletion do not move, bow can we expect that eastern people aha 11 interest themselves for the work in Congreasl— Ckarirttoio* (III.) Courier.

RESOLUTIONS.

Resolved, That we look apon the Nation?! Road aa a great national work, fully authorized by the Constitution—and that the faith of the natiort it irrevocably pledged for its extension and completiip, by the mg»t solemn compact.

Resolved, That the failure of tbe laat Congress for two successive yeara to make appropriations for said work, is a violation, on their part, of a solemn compact, nnd deserves oar decided censure and that we will hold justifiable, solar aa we are concerned, all Members of Congress interested in it* extension and completion, who .shall adopt retaljaftng measures, should a failure be likely to occur.

Resitloed, That ibe abandonment of this work, would not only be a violation of public faith, hut would*be destructive of the fair proapects'of thousands who have settled upon, and adjacent losauf work, and made improvements which never would have leen made, el' cept for their reliance upon Government faith.

Resolved, That the failure to make sufficient and timely appropriations ha* caused thousands to be expended upon this grant work, in the fray of repairs®and that we hold ibe Government responsible fur all such losses as shall have occurred. v* Resolved, That the entire "Great West" has a deep and abiding interest in tbe prosecution of the Cumberland Road, and further supineoees. on the part of those interested, cannot longer be considered a virtue.

Resolved, That in the opinion of th.a meeting, it is inexcusable in Members of Congress from the

give their votes for appropriations to be expended in the East, till justice be meted out to all. Resolved, That the West can no longer, in honor and justice to herself, tamely submit to the step-moth-er policy hitherto exercised towards her nnd her rapidly increasing influence, should admonish opponents, that she will soon have power to reciprocate favors, and to retaliate tf'rongs.

Resolved, That those who feci a proper interest in the completion of the Cumberland Road, and particularly those on the route, bo requested to hold mtetmsfs and express their views, and forward their proceedings to members in Congrees as soon as possible.

Resolved, That our Senators in Congress be requested and our Representatives instructed, to use their utmost exertions to procure a liberal appropriation for the Cumberland Road, during the next session.

RKVliWV OF ELECTIONS. —The results of the elections this year in various States are so different from thoseof 1840 (bat a great deal of curiosity is excited to know the causes of such remarkable changes. The New York Journal of Commerce has prepared brief tabular statement exhibiting the variation in the votes of eleven States as thev were cast at the Presidential election last fall and at the election this year respectivly The Statesare Tennessee,

j.)°

Alabama, Illinois, Maine, Ver

mont. Pennsylvania, Naryland,Georgia,New Jersey, Ohio, and Massachusetts. In every one of these States the Whig vote as compared with that of lost year has dimnished in five of the eleven the Opposition Vot» hasincrased. The aggregate diminution of the Whig vote beljw the vote at the Presidential election is 142,429 tho aggregate Opposition loses*compared with thesamestanderd is36,405. The nett Whig loss therefore over the Opposition loss is 106,023. 1

In Maryland tho Whig loss is 5,103 tho Opposition vote does not vary much from that of last November. The Whig vote in .Massachusetts this year is about 16,000 less than it was in November last, while the Opposition vote is about the same.

The State of Now York is not included in the statement given above, as nil the official returns were not in, judging however from such accounts as had been received, the Opposition votoissome 10,000 less tlmn at the Presidential election and the Whig vote is about 40,000 Irss. In other words tho Whig voto in that State has fallen off about.30,000 more tli»n the Opposition vote.

These tacts are important, since they so to'cstablsh the conviction thnt the disasters of the Whigs at the recent elections are not to be ascribed to any positive increase of strength on the other side so much ns to the apathy and ndiff»ronco of the Wliijjs themselves From what causes this apathv and indifference have sprung let intelligent men judge.—Haft. ^lm.

THE CABOMSO Arriiit.—Sir Allen McNub hns published a card requesting all persons who were directly concernod in the capture and destruction of tho Caroline to forward to him, at Dundurn. their address, place of residence, profession and ago: and if they have suffered any loss in consequence of their share in that exploit, to state tho same, and also to furnish any other particulars they may desire to communicate. What 'crochet has the valiant knight in his head now Is ho about to present to his government the claims of the marauders to reward, fot the astonishing prowess they exhibited in attacking, like a bandol midnight robbers, nn unarmed boat, whose crew, last locked in sleep, were unablo to make any resistance l—Fhil. Eventful infancy nnd loss of twmc. Two families of a brother and sister started from Switzerland 35 years ago lor the United States,—that of the sister including soven boys, her sons. Tlicy emharkod at Amsterdam for this country, with numerous other passengers. A destructive pestilence broke out among tho crew boforo they sailed, which swept off a great number of the emigrants, and among them the entire family of the brother, with the father, mother, and three of the sons of that of the sister, leaving tho remaining four young children to find their way to a strange land without a single friend to provide for than. On their arrival they wore separated, and put out among strangers, whose language they could neither understand nor speak, and for 24 years were without any knowledge of each other. The youngest, not old enough to retain a knowledge ol his own name, had that of hisdeoeased uncle bestowed upon him.— He sorved sn apprenticeship to a trade, worked at it for several years, married, raised a family, studied divinity, and for the last six years has had charge.of a Lutheran congregation in Circleville, Ohio.
