At first, it was thought tbet the company might have kept the works, and turned steam-ship builders for the public it wa* found, however, that such an undertaking would be cpntrary to the deed of settlement. A xtstR—One Robert Smith, a blacksmith, recently died at the Seven Dials, London, worth £400,000, and was so penurious in his habit* as almoat to deprive bimsslf of the means of existence.

NEW SOFA STOTTWO.—An extraordinary and ingenious escape was made from the Stste Prison at Concord, N. H. a few days since, by one of the convicts. He worked in a shop as a cabinet maker and upholster, and having orders tor a large sofa, he maw it with a small bottom and stuffed it with some very light materiala. In thespaee formed between the top and bottom he oontrived to introduce hie body, at the same time when the wagoner came to lake away the piw" of furniture. He was quite a email man, and hts weight waa not auflteient to produce any suspicions tn the mind of the driver. The sofa, thus loaded, was ac cordinglv stowed away in the baggage wagon, and our hero maoe hie eacape.

A Psnttnoe ADTRrro**.—A balloon aseensiwri waa made from St. Louis on the 9th instant hy Mr. S.• Hobart, accompanied by a young lady. After the balloon had attained the height of two mile*, Mr. wished to descend, hut found the valve cord was hound fast in the neck ot the balloon, which hung in folds, pressutg on the small hoop overhead. In this difficulty, the bold Adventurer climbed up the cords to the hoop, and. resting upon it, disentangled the valve cord, which was necessary to give him command of the balloon. He then dMcended, and made a safe landing about eight miles from the city.

The tswvers were perfectly unprepared for such a course of conduct, but as they knew he waa not to be trifled with, they hastily despatched messenger* for their papers and witnesses. In less than twenty minutes, the Court was again engaged in another important trial.

Jfrmp—Small lots new crop are arriving and selling at f6 per 112 lbs water rotted, $7. We hear of an engagement for 25 tons of the coming crop at 5 per lb.

Graiw.—Wheat is worth 90 c. at the mills corn 30 to 37 oats 20 to 22c barley 50 c. Hay— Baled at the river, scarce, and retailing at G2i c. per 100 lbs. From the country. 40 c.

Lard—The stock is more than equal to the demand. The near approach of the season when new lard may be expected in the market, makes holders anxious to realize, and the price is disposed to recede.

Onions—Selling at the river at fl 25 per barrel. Potatoes—37 to 50 per bushel. Sweet potatoes 50 to 75 c.

Raet—Wt quote at 2i to 3 c. Whukn—\f a 18 demand small with a urm supply.

Exchange and Money —The selling rate or sight on New York is 61 and on Philadelphia, 3# c. We bear of no Baltimore exchange, but the bankaare remitting collectionsat a premium of4l c.
