BRITISH STEAMSHIPS ON THE LAKES. A good deal of solicitude hns been produced on the (nwinr by the British Government buildinjj.several armed steamships on the Lakes, and the opinion prevails that it has been done in violation of the treaty between Great Britain and this country. The Albany Evening Journal gives the facts in the matter
A treaty or arrangement was made jn 1817, between the two countries, by which it was stipulated that the naval forces to be maintained upon the American Lakes by the respective parties, should thereafter be confined to the following vessels on each side: "On Lake Ontario, to one vessel not eXctvMitiii one hundred tons burden, and armed with at) eighteen pound cannon. "On the Upper Lakes, to one vessel not exceeding like burden, and armed with like force. "On the waters of Lake Champlain, on* vessel not exceeding like burden, and armed with like force." 11 is further agreed, that if either party should thereafter bo desirous of annulling the agreement, and should give six months notice to that effect, the agreement should ceaso to be binding after the expiration ol the six months. The British Government gave notice to the President of tho United States in November, 183d, that theGovernment had found it necessary to increase their armament on the Lakes.
