A few years ago tha. Treasury was so full it couldn't hold it, and now its all out. Uncle Snm haint got a dollar in his pocket and is in deht too, but who says ho is brokef—he has sot plenty of property, but if he was to throw up and sell off his property in these times it wouldn't bring enuff to pay one year's expense he is at. And kit is with most kinds of property,—very few who have much and owe anything but would come out the leetle end of the horn by selling off and giving up. To the Editors# the New York Express-. We are coming—slowly but surely—for as the 6meral baa got a good many old friends and stopping places on the way, and wants to look about him and see as much of the country he can before 4th March next, he thought it best toOtart early and make as much of a circumbendibus as possible. 1 de raly 6» lieve if theOineral had let folks have their way, be wouldn't "touch bottom" from the time ef leaving the Cabin till he got to the Whit* House—but he would rather go afoot any day than pass through all the hurra wing that is set up ail along the roao— it beats er"all hollow—for there

/'says he, "poor folks never ought to borrow ey! tney ought to get aloog without it." "Well 1! i« a notion I never thought on afore, for when I

was in the last Government along with Gineral Jackson, all our democtatic friend» used to peater the Gineral and ms all the while to make the United States Bank to shell out to poor folks, and we took th* deposits_away from it because the complaint was that Squire Biddle and the Bank was too aristocratic and didn't give poor folks a chance to borrow money to carry on their trade with. "Now," says I, "how uo you make that square with your present notions." "Why the fact is." says he, "it is pretty tuff work to make the notions of one lime fit the notions ofanothcr time but I do say it never will do to have anothersuch a Bank, for it is pretty nigh all owned by foreign aristocrats, and that never will do in a democratic country—it is downright awful and Mr. Bucchanan and Mr. Benton and all the good democrats tn Congreas, »ay it will be the ruin of the country." "Well, now," says I, "if ihat don't beet Solomon! How long do you think it would take foreigners to destroy this country by putting their money in thebig bank, and let Squire Kiddle loan it out to ihe poor democracy, who you say will never pay it back again!" This set him to scratching bis head a little, and not liking that tune he changed it and said, ''but it aint right to loan foreigners, money in that wav, it aint treatingon'em Well, and it destroys their confidence in us."—,rWell, well," says I,"we best, look a little into that matter, and see that things ain't made worse than they need be. We have pritty much all on us been struggling under and through a heavy storm, and he who haa saved any thing may think himself pritty well off. Oar advices from Alexandria nre to the34tlli ult.and we nre in possession of journals and advices, from Malta. to the S8ih.

The intelligence from China is as gratifying as it is important, and it is especially satisfactory because it bears with it this grt-at zest—it was unexpected: so little importance ban been attached to the progress announced hy the last overland mail to have been made by the Chinese expedition. It apoears, however, that the Chinese quest ion is thoroughly settled—that the occupation of Chnsnn. and the proceedings of Admiral Elliot have brought the Emperor of Chins to his senses, snd that he hasnffered tosend plenipotentiaries to Canton or Ningpo. for the arrangement of all matters in difference with Great Britain.

Shortly after the capture of Chusan, Admiral Elliot, in proceeding to the Pecho river, was met hv a mandarin of the third rank of the Chtnese empire, though some accounts sav hv the Emperor himself, while others affirm that Admiral Elliot had arrived at Pekin.and had an audience of the Emperor.

Upon the same princp'e, I have discovered that I am the natural proprietor of all the necklsdes, the crosses, stars, broc&aes, and embroidered cloths, which I see at a play or birth-night, as giving more natural delight to the spectator than to those that wear thsm. And I look on the beaux and ladies as so many paroquets in an aviary, tulips in a garden, designed purely for my diversion.—Bsrkeltp.

This latter, indeed, has fallen into disgrace, and the Emperor offers to surrender him into the hands of the British, to he dealt with as thev mav think proper.

Chusan is not to be given up until the treaty be signed. It is stated fnnd certainly there is nothing miraculous in the fact that htsCelestial Majesty should he so influenced. 1 that the Emperor is greatly annoved at our occupation of Chusan. and his Minister hinted "that the Admiral's visit had prevented the march of fierce soldiers to retake the island

We are sorrv to add that dvsentary prevailed among our troops at Chusan, and that the climate was very unhealthy.

Not only do our passions and prejudices induce us to look upon objects in '.he light most favorable to our wishes, but thev also deceive us in showing

objects where thev do not exist. A storv is told of a curateaphorism.Theyhad heard it, and saidthatthemoon was inhabited and telescope in hand, were anxiously reconnoitring its inhabitants. "If I do not deceive myself, said the lady, "I preceive two figures they approach each other they are without douht two lovers, happy in each other's affection." "Poh! Madame, cried the curate, those two shadows that you imagine to he lovera, are two steeples of cathedrals." This story is our history. We see only those things we are desirous of seeing on the earth, as in the moon, different passions show us either lovers or cathedral Bteeples. Delusion is a necessary effect ot our prejudices, nnd its force is in proportion to :he blindesss into which they plunge us.

HE undersigned has leased, for a umber of years, the well-known and old establishedTavern Stand, in town of Terre-Haute, formerly known as the

JAMES WASSON, and is now prepared for the reception of company During the late non-occupancy of the house, it has undergone a very extenaive and thorough repair, and it now offers many advantages not heretofore possessed by it at any former period. Its contiguity to thesteam boat landing, and its central position in regard to the busies of the town, muatalwaya make it a disirabllocatton to those in any way connected with that buainess. Attached to it are large and extensive stables, which it is my determination to place under the control of careful and attentive persons, in whose hands the horses of travellers and others will be faithfully attended to. In all the departments of the establishment, I design to see that order and regularity is preserved, added to faithful and prompt attention to the gtieota of the House. With these assurances.
