From the New Yoik Couriers* Eoqart^-. P. WILLIS AND HfS DETRACTORS. Such is the title of a flaming paragraph ia a Veekly paper, in which it is asM^tcd, firstly, that the object of all editor* in expf/smg the tracasseries, and commenting upoft tome of the most salient faults in the charaeferof this clever young writer, can be "laid bare with a single word, envy —that "he is, past all question, the most elegant delineator of society and manners, the most captivating traveller that ever left the new world to record his opinions of the old"—that "he is admitted into the very blaze of the most brilliant society in Europe"—"and more than all, is classed in England among the first poets, and roost, promising authors of the age!!!" We have long seen through Uie system which has been pursued by the friends of Mr. Willi!, who is certainly a man of pretty and accomplished mind—though not quite one of the first poets of the age—not quite equal to Cnirtpbell or Moore, or Rogers, or Iteoians, in England—not quit equal to LaMartine, Delarign*, or Be ranger, in France—not quite equal tn our own Bryant or Halleck—not yet quite one of the most promising prose writers. That our spleen has been somewhat moved by the letters of English correspondents, copied into New York papers, mentioning in a breath, and reducing to a common standard, Irving and Willis—Bryant and Woodworth—we do not deny. But though wc have been somewhat provoked by all this, we should certainly not have troubled ourselves to investigate the matter, had his friends and admiring critics, passed any where withiruide the bounds of moderation—as it is, we shall look a little into this matter and we believe we can establish one or two sufficient causes for the strictures of the press, without accounting for them by "the single word envy." In the first place, as to the assertion, "that he is the most, elegant delineator of society ami manner,w &c.—This must of course depend in a great measure on the taste of his eulogist. That Mr. Willis has a perfect right depict manners and men, without subjecting himself to any disagreeable rernarks, is undoubted—provided always, that in reciting the conversation and publishing the names of distinguished individuals, the conversations be auch as possess some intrinsic value, apart from the names of the converscrs. To record the wise opinions, the witty remarks, the original thoughts of great men, is indeed worthy of a great writer. To repeat mere verbiage and small-talk is to pander to the low tastes and worse feelings of mankind.— There is yet another proviso to be made—that the impression! conveyed by the sketches shall be genuine and true jand above all, that there be no breach of confidence. We fear indeed that there is heavy cause of doubting whether Mr. Willis be possessed of that jealous and discriminating instinct, that delicate manliness of mind, which intuitively avoids the commission of the slightest offence against that flice observance which men call honor. We fear that his last record of Moore's opinions concerning O'Connel comes under the last named head. We fear that it will he found that this conversation, heard by Mr. Willis at the table of an entertainer, who is at least hospitable to him, and immediately sent hither for publication, is one which no gentleman would have deemed it correct to send fortJMo the world, ijjaimuch as it could not fail to produce consequences of the worst effect, Bhould it return to England. Wiih regard to the fact that ho is admitted into the mast brilliant society of Europe, wc have a little more to sayj and, though we habitually shun the dragging of private details into our columns, we shall not in this inatance shrink from analyzing this society, in order to set aside for ever what wc must consider a most impudent deception. Whether Mr. Wills be deceived or deceiving we know not but the fact is simply this. So far is the fcircle at Lady 1) 's from being such as to call forth envy, that we doubt whether any American of much character or standing woukl sven seek to be admitted to it. I,ax, and in some respect licentious, as tha aristocratic socicty of London is—and of general prevalence as is the rule that no woman, bS her overt acts what they may, can be denied admission to snfeiety, provided she is countcnanced by her husbands-it is nevertheless an unboubted fact that Lady II cannot be received by any woman of reputation—»uspicions concerning her amounting almost to the certainty that she has

ML RUMORS. «$if From the Baltimote Patriot, of Slay f8ih: It it rumored—and the rumor gains belitj—-Hhat Gov. CASS has resigned the. War Office, and that bis resignation has been accepted: We had heard that theGovernor had evinced symptoms of oppugnation sit the promotion of the late 4th Auditor: but were in hope that if he possibly could swallow Fan Burenitm, he would remain in his station—for reallv, he is the best of the lot
It is rumored that Mr. Foasrat has quit the State Department in disgust—and forever! Well, there is, if the rumor be true, more spunk ia the man than we bad began to calculate upon! Yet we have strong doubts of his giving up one place till he takes another. Mr. F. wants a Foreign Mission, where he can be at his ease.
It it rumartd that LEVI WOOUHCRT will be promoted to the State Depart ment. "Very likely! He is a roan who will always be sure "to make hay while the sun shines." He will take a high office under or with any body, for the time being—especially when be knows not what a future dfy may bring forth, but is apprehensive it will be nothing good to him. He is now Secretary of the Treasury and acting Secretary of 3Ute is the absence of Mr. Forsyth. it rumored, since the result of the Rhode Island election has been ascertained, that the Post Master General forswears the Kitchen Cabinet, and declares that the Post Office shall not be an electioneering machine for the benefit of Martin an Buren! This is the most amusing rumor of them all! and yet it is quite possible that it is true. There may be an understanding to this offect, which is to be given out, anil carried out, until the confirmation or rejection of Kendall takes place.
Correspondence of the Chronicle. "WASHIXGTO:*, May 15, 1335. "You may not have heard that Forsyth is to leave the State department, and I understand from very good anthority that the factis so, and that Woodbury is to take his place. W, is now performing the duties. What induces Forsyth to quit I know not, except it be mortification at being in a cabinet where Kendall rules the roast. It must be mortifying to a man like Forsyth to find himself a cipher wnen in contact with a man like Kendall,
What do you think of a new turn that things are taking here.' Kendall forswears the kitchen ?Yes! he declares that if the thing be possible, he will be honest, and that the Post Office shall not be an electioneering machine for the benefit of Van Buren. The Van Buren men don't know exactly how to take it. Some laugh and hint that it is all moonshine, and that Kendall is merely playing a game to concilate the opposition, while he works in secret. There are others, who look grave, and shake their heads, and say that there is no dependence on him,
tfiat'if he
finds
been living
in a most inconceivably abominable intercourse \H'ith the husband of her own daughter—the observed of all observers, as Mr. Willis styles him. Mr. llulwer, great as are his talents, never has been in the best socicty—owin^ unquestionably to the fact, that he prefers being king»of a clicque to holding a station of equality among his equals—Mr. d'lsraeli being one of his humblest followers and most respectful adulators. This, then, is the most brilliant socicty of England—a French adventurer married into a family for the express purpose of intriguing with his wife's mother—that mother herself deemed infamous from her self-avowed familarities with Lord Byron and a hundred others, and the sister of two woman equally abandoned with herself—all three having lived with their present husbands previous to the existence of any legitimate connexion between them. That Mr. Willis can be ignorant of all this, appears a little difficult to be believed, and to say the least is sufficiently doubtful to create a suspicion that he may be playing upon the credulity of his countrymen by the introduction of titled names—hoping thereby to render himself current in the fashionable circles here, by pretending to a high position in that of England, As concerns his repute as a poet and author in F.ngland, we arc aware that this has been stated, and wc also are aware by whom—by a Liverpool critic, whose reputation for taste and judgment is as entirely cisatlantic as the vast fame of Mr. Willis must—if it exist at all—be European in its origin. Wc have already said as much as can be needed on an unpleasant topic nor would wc have said thus much, had it not been absolutely extorted from us. For the rest we can assure the admirers of Mr. Willis, that, in common with them, we can discover much to admire in his writings— that no one could have pulled him down, had they not first elevated him to a height for which he never was, and never will be qualified—the humming bird is lovely and delicate, and never can be ridiculous unless ft aspire to be deemed an eagle.
tions, that he will do so. There has treason been discovered in the camp. One of the cabinet has, it is said, actually advanced two or three hundred dollars towards the support of some White paper.
From the Plough Boy.
SILK.—Wo take much pleasure in saying that wo bavebcoti furnished by Mrs.
GAUOIIEV, tho lady of Mr. Arthur M'Gaughey, Clerk of the circuit court of this county, with a Specimen of Silk, produced by worms fed on the leaves of the wild mulberry, which in strength and evenness, i» not surpassed by any that ha? come within our notice.
By way of experiment and amusement, the lady caused the attention of a lad to be partially devoted to the gathering of leaves from Mulberry trees in tho woods, and the feeding of them to a few worms for the space of six weeks: and sho devoted about four days to the reeling of their produce, which amounted to 8 doz. and seven cuts, or, as the fair spinsters of the east would calculate, about 3-10 knots, weighing 9jlb«.
Thus, tho partial attention of a lad 6 week# (a considerable portion of his time being devoted to tho garden,) and four days spent by this lady without the proper conveniences of a mulberry grove, or machinery for reeling, etc. has produced tho value of at least, 25 or $30—and this too without undergoing that fatigue attendant upon most agricultural pursuits.
Tho greatest results, usually spring from small beginnings and were the attention of all tho persous of our country, who for the want of employment suitable to their physical powers are not effective in ordinary avocations, to bo directed to the production of silk, with the necessary preparations, it is evident from the above result, that there would be a saving of money at home, which is sent abroad for iilks, to a greater amount than that required for the support _^f our state government.
And to a lady whose patriotism will lead her to equip ono of hei boys for an Indian campaign, and exhort him to sustain a gallant bearing, should he moet the savage foe, and direot tho attentiou of another, to an experiment calculated to demonstrate the vast utility of se useful a branch of industry, far greater applause is due, than to many whoso voices have resounded in tho dome of'the capital of onr nation,

THE BALTIMORE CONVENTION. The Delegates sent oft bj the OfficeHolders, met at Baltimore on the 20th Ma}, as we learn from the papers of that city. AMDREW STEVENSON, of Virginia, was chosen President thereof. After twelve hours preparation, it was resolved to support MARTIN VAN BUREN for the Presidency at the approaching election. Very well if the three hundred and fifty who composed the Convention—with the hope of office before their eyes—are prepared to go for him, why let them go—they were hired for that purpose. How many of the freemen of Indiana are willing to be led by the nose in the same way? The war cry of the contest now will be, Convention or no Convention—Dictation or no Dictation—Freedom or Bondage/" The People and the Regcncy will have to fight it oul—one armed with the power of the Ballot-Box—the other with the Patronage of the Government. Reader! "choose ye between them!"
Col. JOHNSON was nominated for the Vice Presidency. The proceedings of the meeting have not yet reached us.
