ContiaenUi^—Coagrcc^ knew this—out they knew thatbanks well managed was a good to the country, aad the only way to keep em from doinevif, wife to make one to keep all Ae rest in order, ji#t like the balance wheel ol a watch or the pendulum of a clock, take them away and yoii see a wizzen right off. If an/ man sap Congress hail no right to make a bank tor tbi? purpose, shohld like him to shpw me whl ire it is Staid in theXoaatitution that Congre^ aiat got*the rigfit. Can't Congress pass a law ftkrin that no steatn-boa! shall be made with a bifer down in the mid die on't?—or pass any Jjw regulatin s'eam-boats for the safety of lives and property—^and why not? Because there aint nothin in the Constitution again it, and if Congress thinks the public good requires it, they can do it—^j'at as they hare got the right of ?aying no forynershall vote at elections unlesa be has ben in the coutry certain time—or that no foryncr shall own vessels with our flag—or that no for-
0n( goon
But what lifts my dander most is that «uch folks and Mr* Van Buren and his party say? that Congress has got no right to make a bank in which the bull people own one fifth part of the capital and profits', and at the same time go for a hull batch ofSta'e Banks in which nowe butHheparly"' can git a'fioger, when the Constitution says as plain as A. that no state shall haire the right (o issue "Bills of Credit," but that Congress atone shall have the right to issue "Bills of Creditbftt that Congress alone shall have the right to "regulate the currency." Now if a bank bill ant a Bill of Credit, I should like to know what kind ofa crittur it is. And if folk3 find paper money sometimes more convenient than hard money to send about the counlry-jist as tliey now find steam boats more sartin than sail boats—thet* if paper money aint currency, what on earth is it?
Lettwojist 6uch country as vrc have befpit fight along side of one anouther— and let one u&eJiard money and nail boats and tother use good safe Bank paper and ttteam boats, and see arhich will go ahead fastest.
It is a plagy curious piece q|bJbui$ness when one comes to think dn'f, toee how things have got twisted round right rong ecna first on this Batik question—and to understand it, I mujgt tell you that story about old Squire I'eahody.
When the squire first went down lo Socco he bought a considerable of a farm, and seen it was more than he wanted to fence in at first, he let a good piece go out into commons, and all the neighbors yse to pasture their Cattle out bat to right*, the Squire's boys beganto grow up,and one ofhi? sons, who had been studying with lawyer Joslyn,he come home, & just about that time the neighbors4iad caird a town meetin about thircommons, and oo« of these resolutions said that seeing that iifuire Peabody^ /arm lay right along side tlys coi% mons, and otherJolks had to drive their cows over three mites to pasture out—squire Peabody ought either top the difference for pastwrfn his cattle, or not be allowed lo havn any cattle, at all onVand Ezra Gleasing, that squint ey'd chap you've heard me tell on before, and a safe politician, he went so far as to giv£a toast down in the Bar-room arter tire meetin broke up saying-—MEtarnal hostility agin o|4 squired Peahotly, and his cows, and that the honcloMi the cattle in the neighborhood required it/'
The Squire Iras peaceable critter as ever was, and never did nothin without X,aw on his side——and his, son bein now alongside on him, as soon as they heard of this they begftri to muster up the old deeds, and ggt th^curnpus and surveyin chains, and tne next day here was a terrible to do aboutSocco, whon folks begnu to¥see the post^atwl rails gom up round every acre of that corrmon, for there warirt an acre on't that the Squire showedgem what his right was, and they till hud to nock

The second edition of the New York Journal of Commerce, under date of 8th instant, declares it to be beyond doubt that the-Asiatic Cholera exists in that city, through as yet the cases are few. "Last night and this Awrning," says the same paper, "We have heaijJ of eight or ten cases, most or all which have terminated fatally. About the same number, we learn, have reported to the Board of Health. They are in all partB of the city, providing that the disease was not caught, as thr expression is, but that it was endemic. On the cont^ry, there are two or three cases which appear to have followed the law# of contagion*" The Journal then states several cases, supposed to be Cholera, adding that "there is no doubt a good deal ol spurious Cholera."
