Such has been the course of the Globe and, unless checked by the intelligence and independency of the party, such will he the results of that course.
The mode adopted by Mr. Blair of carrying on the wp.f against Judge M'Lean strikes us an being rather ludricous than alarming. He does not, dare, not, deny the claims of M'Lean to the respect and confidence of the country but, with instinctive keenness, he snuffs \ip the distant slander and sets eagerly to work to pry into the domesticconcerns of the Journals supposed to be favorable to him.
In the prosecution of this manly design, he makes and publishes the astonishing discovery, that one of the hands in the office ol the Moderator was once engaged in the office of the Telegraph that hi.s hands were stained by contact with the type on which that nefarious and hor*S| in _u ,.,i,ia

loss to conjecture the motives
or excuse for such a course. They recognize in John M'l^ean an early and efficient supporter of Andrew Jackson, a t)cmocrat of the Jeffer son school, a statesman! of acknowledged abili ties, and a politician in whom there is no guile. Can the abuse of *uch a man, an officer under General Jackson,be prompted by a desire fo ad vance the interests of the party? On the Contrary, it i* obviously intended to divide the fmrfy. It ineuJts nnd injure* ihmt large mass of the Jackson party favorable to Lean for the next Presidency and disgtuts and offends even those tvho prefer nnother, but who have been taught by the example of our venerable President to admire the talents and respect the probity of that favorite son of the West. The Democratic party of the Union may, and probably will nominate John M'Leiifl for the Presidency and the Globe be forced eithe to support him or oppose the party. The probabil ity, nay the possibility of 6uch an occurrence illustrates, in the strongest light, thr madness, selfishness and disorganizing tendency of the present degraded ptHicy of the Globe. It demonstrates that, wedded to the sordid interests of a designing and irrisponsible few, it paiitc for such a disorganization and division of the party, as will drive off the friends of MLean andof I an Hurrn, and leave the honors of the government mere offal for them to batton on*

jWc are just returning from a short cruise up the Adriatic, where our national ships have not been for several years, and where the condition of our commercial relations seemed to require the presence of our flag. There are no arguments so effective in removing those small embarrassments which occasionally vex our commerce, as the appearance of an armed force. There is more power in one gaping gun, than in fifty diplomatic remonstrances. Nations have generally no conscience they are just from necessity, and faithful to their contracts because it is dangerous to be otherwise. But the infringements at Trieste, which our merchantmen experienced, are now in a great measure removed, and it is a hap',y circumstance, since our commerce with that port has more than doubled within a few year?. The commander of this station has been indefatigable in his endeavors to protect and place upon an advantageous footing our commercial relations.
At Trieste, as in many qjher port?, we experienced a warm and generous hospitality. Entertainments were received & returned with a flow of good feeling which, I bore no doubt will long awaken a mutual and pleasurable remembrance.
Our ships were visited by hundreds, I may say thousands. It appeared to me, indeed, that nearly the whole population came on board. There was the English lady stepping over the accommodation ladder to the deck, with the lofty air of one who recollects that her own king has also got a big fleet there was the German lady with her shorter and more richly favored form, preserving a less presuming carriage, and wondering that she had read to little of a people that possetssed such strong and beautiful ships and there was the Italian lady with her soft blue eye and easy gait, unoffended by your most piercing look, and mellowing down each thought into something that might sweeten the occasion. But of all that I saw, two young Jewesses most intensely riveted my eye. They were sisters, and so very like in form, complexion, countenance, and voice, that you would have said they must been cast in the same mould and animated in the same spirit I know not whether they were twins, but two beings more trulj lovely and alike, were never, I apprehend, rocked in the same cradle." They seemed to smilo, to speak, and move to the impulses of some mysterious sympathy, which harmonized all their individual feelings and wishes into the flow of one full unloaded soul. Long may they live but when they do pay the debt of nature, it will be said of them, "they were not divided."
While at Trieste, I visited in company with Capl. Read, the magnificent grotto of Santa Madellcna, which lies distant about forty miles, near the great road to Yien-

beyond. I did not vappose it posuWe for stalactical formations to assume sach a rich variety of shape and hue, and present in their combinations results of soch surpassing beauty and magnificence.
We are after all, only the poor copyists of nature, and who can tell what models of exquisite taste and harmony still lie ondiscovered in her choice recesses? I sometimes think that as yet we only see the rude covering which she has cast over the diviner charms, and am half disposed to rue the perils of her polar ice, in an effort to reach the marvels of her central sphere.
But to return toothings near at hand:— we are»now steering for Marseilles to replenish our funds then (o weigh anchor for Mahon, where we are to take injprovisions, when we shall make sail for the Archipelago, where the United States and John Adams are now cruising, and where it is not improbable that oar ship will winter. Should our winter quarters be at Smyrna, 1 may perhaps date you an epistle at Jerusalem. But 1 have failed as a correspondent so utterly in reaching my engagement, that you may still distrust my new promises. But you shall certainly, if I live, bear from me oftener for a year to come, than you have in the year that is past. We are beginning to look anxiously for the arrival of the Delaware, and the thousand letters which we hope she will bring us. We are all in good health, and have been so through the season.
Yours truly, W. C.
Duelling is almost extinct in this portion of our country, the practice silently yielding to the power of public opinion, but in the Southern and Western States it still flourishes in baleful vigor. In England and in France it keeps its ground firmly if it does not even advance, and it is clear enough that little has been effected towards its abatement by all that legislation had nerve to do. There is no doubt, however that legislation can suppress it entirely, but then it must be of course more energetic than any yet tried. We find this discussed by a strong writer in Blackwood's Magazine, who insists that there can be but one cure for duelling, and that is to make the penalties so severe tha»none will venture to encounter them. He declares that the challenger roust be hung, and the acceptor of"a challenge transported for'life. The second's should in every instance be publicly scourged by the hangman, and transported for life, except in ca3e where thy had stimulated the bad spirits of the parties, in which case they should be hanged. The sentence, to be of the slightest service in putting down the abomination, should be of an order with which no other feeling could come into competition. So long as the stain of personal timidity is capable of being fixed on the man who refuses to fire his pistol at the heart of another, so long duelling will defy the sense of mankind and the direct law of God against the crime of murder. But let the punishment be of severity which it would be madfjnjl tfo impiifniinn

pones his sense of their obligation to a certamty of exile, chains, and bread and water for life. As to the severity, it would probably never be required the warning would be quite enough. Or, at most, a single evidence that justice was in earnest would settle the question for ever, and a single fire eating ensign or half gentleman hung up, would put an end to the hairtnggei dynasty.—.V.
