MR. TA!«T1 HEASOX®.
Recalling to the reader's mind the fact tbat one main reason wl»y the present Secretary of the Treasury could not conscientiously keep *his hands off the public deposits until Congress met, was, tbat the Charter of the Bank of the IJnited States was to expire so early aa jn the year 1&56, we ask his attention to a cnse st.il stronger than 1 hat of our District Banks, (already referred to,) fhomring the shallowness of this plea on the part of the honorable Secretary. The Bank selected by Mr. Kbxb.mul, for jVjr. Secretary Taney's nse, in the City of
Ballimoie, is the Union Bank of Maryland.— *Tlie Charter of that Bank 'will expire on the 1st dav of January, 1835, more than a year sooner than thrtaf the Bankvf the United States!
What becomes, we again ask, of this cogent argument of the Secretary for anticipating the action of the People's Representatives on the subject of the Public money? As reasons for the exeicise of a stupendous power, is it not trifling with Congress to otlcr to thecn such arguments a& this?
Speaking of the Baltimore Pet Bank, we sliould like to know how much money that Bank has lent to any Department of (he Government what sort of security has been given for the loan and under the authority of what law the loan was made! We would put the same question to the Pet Banks in Philadelphia, in New York, and Boston, and we hope that each of thorn, or some one for them, will to these questions true answer make.
When the answers are made, we should think it would form a much more respectable employ rnent for high officers of the Government to explain these transactions to Congress, and justify them if they can, than to be availing themselves of thejKports of Government spiers into the private CTsiness of individuals, and sending such report* to Congress as furnishing cogent reasons for the removal of the deposits before Congress could assemble. We doubt whether any government, or the high officers of any government, ever before played at so small a game n« this. It is told, indeed, in history, that one of the Roman Emperors, Domitian by name, solaced his severe labors by the amusement of catching flies but it is also told, that, when thus disposed, hp retired to his closet— He did not ostentatiously proclaim to the world in what trifling pursuits he employed his Imperi a I time.
Having thus casually alluded to this other reason for removing the public, money from a place of safe ty to other places, let us see whether it will bear examination any better than the argument whose futility we have already fcliown. ...
The Secretary of the Treasury is of opinion that lie wn* bound to remove the deposits, because the Bank in which they were made lent certain moneys to men of businesrin a manner which he cannot reconcile to his notions of the rule of right. He sends a document along with his Report to Congress, ns the ground upon which alone he would have felt himselfjustitied to take the public money into his own hands, or lend it, we suppose, as he has done, to certain •favored Banks by half a million of dollars at a time. We say nothing about the particular gise he h.-yi selected, (that of tlie publishers of the National Intelligencer, w4io are also other-

PRESIDENT'S MiaSAOfc.
This document we insert to-day. It it rather a tame performance: being, as it strikes us, remarkably dry in -its derails, and void of spirit or animation—except indeed where the U. S. Bank is the topic, to which near a column of the Message is devoted. There is no abatement of the malignity heretofore evinced against that institution, nor is the spirit of vengeance (for its refusal of political improvement) in any degree appeased or mitigated. If the charter of the Bank was not so nearly run Out, the President would kill it off if he could, by means of nscirefacias This message reiterates at the commencement— that novel and valuable piece of humbug that our 'Government!' in its intercourse with ohter powers "seeks for nothing that is notrij ht,and submits to nothing that is wrong." The national debt will be entirety paid oflfduribg the next year. The post oflijpe department is evidently in'necessitous circumstances/ though there is a good deal of ditsl in the paragraph devoted to that subject.
In regard io ihe republican doctrine of a single Presidential term, it will be seen that the'Old Roman7 is still made to enact the part of a finger. lie seems to be perfectly convinced, that lo any on* but himself, one term, either of four or six years, would be quite enough. And this will be quoted, as renewed evidence of his stern, unbending republicanism! But this is the age of modest merit.
There is one suggestion in the Message, to which we yield a hearty response. It is that which, referring to the numerous and fatal disasters consequent upon steam navigation, suggests the probable advantage of pecuniary and penal legislation, as a remedy The virtue of this remedy ought in our opinion to be tried, and that right speedily.—Bait. Pal.
[Published by request-] TO THE PUBLIC.
Having seen a Circular from John Ewing addressed to the citizens ol the counties of Knox, Davies?,Martin,Green, Lawraw rence, Owen, Putnam, Clay, Vigo and Sullivan, in which reference is made to a certificate given by Mr. Law in relation to the conversation D. Chadd, of Putnam, pending the late Congressional election— I deem it right to make the following statement, in relation thereto.
Some time previous to the late election I was present, at the tavern of Mr. Ellett, in ihe town of Green Castle, when a conversation took place between Messrs. Law and Chadd, in which Chadd stated he was going to vote for John Ewing becanse he was a Jackson man and, as a proof that he was so that Ewing had told him (Chadd) that he, (Ewing) had voted for Jas. G. Read, as tiic Jate Jackson candidate for Governor, and regretted he was not elected. Mr. Law told Chadd that he always understod Ewing had supported General Stapp, and not Read. Chadd replied that if this was the case he vrould not support him,and promised to write, the next mail either to Read himself, or to

To the £dtlort of the Indiana Journal. Accident has lately thrown in my way the Indianapolis Democrat of the 30th ult. in which I observe along and labored editorial article, replete with bitter person^ abuse against roe, on account of the late removals of the Land Officers at Jndianapoiis. r. 1
I merely wish to say to the public, through your paper, that the falsehoods And scurriHity published in the Democrat, are entirely gratuitous, and unworthy of serious replication. 1 well know the. influence, under which that press is now conducted as Mr. its late own? er, told me, last Jaly, that he had Sold his establishment to Lieut. John F. Lane, and that Arthur St. Clair. Esq. was surety for the pavment of the purchase money.— With Lieut. Lane I was once connected in the service of Indian Emigration, nod for his insufferable .insolence, I was compelled to give him a moderate cliastisement, at the house of Judge Marshall, in Shelby County, Ohio, about the *20th Sept. 1&32, in the presence of the Judge and several other gentlemen, who would at any time attest to the fact, if it were of any importance. But against the removed officers, Messrs. St. Clair and Drake, I have never entertained anj unkind feelings, nor had 1 the least agency or participation in their removal from office, further than to report to the Secretary of the Treasury their otcn written actc note ledgernents of the manner in which they had conducted their offices, upon which, as I have subsequently understood, the President felt himself bound to dismiss them from the public service. Nor have I now one unfriendly feeling towards them. They or their friends may, if they please, instigate the lately imported patent Editor of the Democrat to continue to abuse and villify me yet it will neither suit my convenience, nor comport with my sense of propriet}', to follow their example, or to notice in any public manner, such angry ebullitions of malevolence and mortification. I understood, when I left Washington, that my official report would be published. When.this shall come before the public of Indiana, they will be enabled tojudge how far I have deserved the concontymely and reproach cast upon my actf, through the columns of the Democrat.
However widely we may differ in opinion, on subjects of general politics, I feel well assurred, you will do me the justice to give this note a place in your Journal. 1 have the honor to be, very respectfully, our ob't servant,
JAMES B. GARDINER.
