known the valuable invenfuwi of an IndustrioH? and enterpri^tng cirtzerr. It eahnot but recommend itself etrongiy to the attention of those who make shipments to distaint ports or where a hot climate is to bfe encountered: and we know of none whd are more immediately interested in it than the millers o£ the west, who ate obliged to send their flour to the distant market and unfavorable climate of New Orleans. To the latter class it may be the meai$ of sa ving, annually, thousands of dollars.

We also published, Vol. 43, page 249, an account of this improvement, the editor having visited Mr. Tyson's mill to see the apparatus in operation, when he felt and sate that much moisture or dampness was expelled.

FIELD OF BI»ADE\SBUUCH. Five miles north of Washington is ibe ground on which was fought the famous battle of Blademburg. Famous, because the defeat of the American army then and the succeeding barbarism performed at the capital by the enemy, opened the eyes of all parties, and incited them to retrieve the honor of their country. The road by which the enemj advanced, crosses the eastern branch of the Potomac* (here dwindled into a mere rivulet) by a small wooden bridge, and is bordered on one side by a forest, and on the other is open to a row of poplar irees, which form an acute angle with the road at a little distance from the river. The battery under the direction of the gallant Commodore Barney, was located under cover of a slight breast-work beneath these poplars, and formed the only efficient protection to the capital, for the arm), after firing their muskets once or twice, and having a few wounded by the shot of the encmv, retreated behind Georgetown. The Commodore and his brave band worked the cannon well, if we may judge from the fact that twelve hundred British troops lay buried in the trench which runs along the east side of the road below the bridge. In the face of the fire, however, (which, had it been supported by the aforesaid army, mi^ht have driven back the enemy) the British troops crossed the river, and Barney was forced to make the best retreat he Qould* His horse was shot under him, and himself taken prisoner about a mile this vide of Washington—a mound under a tree by the road side marking the spot.

Let me not forget to show you the "duel ground" of Washington, without which it seems our legislature could not, in times past legislate. A quarter o( a mile from the battle ground, a little rivulet crosses the road—or rather the road crosses the rivulet, and to the right of the bridge may be seen a narrow glen, and a spot of ground within it cleared of the brush wood and ready for service when required. A splintered tree, with only one branch covered with verdure, stands in the middle of the road, and from the top as we passed one of the large carion birds so common in the souther states, was flapping his broad with his

wings and screaming in unison fellows who were engaged near by. Here
