learn from a western paper, a
youog gentleman from New Xork has been fined $28and costs for kissing the wife of man with whom he boarded. The suit was brought fiy the husband for the recover/ of damages, some part of which were sustained more than a year ago. by the testimony of the kisue, that the offence has been repeated *eight or nine times, within a few months, making the price ol the smacks about $3 each, fcso young men, take warning- Be cautious in all things, but be especially careful how you kiss other people's wives.
We don't think that the above is a yctr\f exorbitant rate, if the western damsels arc any thing like our yankee ones. It should have been stated how Jong the kisses were. Byron says the length is the only way to determine the value of a kiss. For ex tmple: 'A long—long kin—a kiss of youth and tow,' is assuredly worth more than three dollars. Shakespeare also has a line
-:iin
which tlie beauty of these delicious ^kisses is well expressed: |i A kiss ,f Long as m/$W*x.--Sipett my revenge!!,
Goodness! what fellows these poets must have been for kiting H!

Ylnecdnle,***A gentleman in a neighboring State, being recently on a dun*3|iing^excun»ion,rode into a country town for breakfast. On enquiring for the ,brsl public house, one was pointed out rto him as aifordin? the best "entertainment for man and horse," but contrary .. to custom there was no sign board.—
While breakfast was preparing, our tra 'vellur entered into conversation with the landlord, and amongst other things enquired why he had not put up a sign.
The landlord replied that he had one but he could not put it up yet a while. Being asked the reason, he said that an old soldier, a man of some skill in the artofsign painting, and who had breasted the storm of the revolution, had painted a sign for him. representing a *prnad eagle, with a glorious array of stripes and stars—that just as he was about to put it up, he happened to count the stars, and found that the artist had only painted twenty-three. He complained to the painter and desired him to add the other star—he refused, but said he would paint two half stars for
Micl igan and Florida—but'as for S. Carolina, she had nullified herself out of the Union, and she should not have a place in the constellation—he had left a place for her, hut he would not I fill it until she returned duty to the Un» ion.^ No arguments could prevail with the old soldier, and the landlord was obliged to lay aside his sign and await the issue* ..

TBOOK,
HE December number of the LADY'S completes the FIFTH yOLUME, ,•
In presenting this number fo their patrons, the publishers make it an occasion to render tbeir thanks for the steady and continued encouragement they have received during the past year.
