PB&L1XO AND SENTIMENT. There are two men of my acquaintance, of nearly the same age, property and standing in society, one of whom is a man of feeling and the other man of fentiment Sentiment is ther a more gifted man than Feeling, write* and talk? well, and on no subject does he speak so often and so

mentis the admiration of his acquaintances. Feeling the delight of his friends. No better illustration can be given of the difference between them, than was shown in their conduct on une particular occasion. A mutual friend of theirs had died suddenly ,under circumstances of peculiar affliction, and leaving a large family nearly destitute. Sentiment heard of his death as he was going to an evening party, where he spoke of his departed friend and of the irreparable loss to bis widow and children, in such a way as to bring tears into the eyes of all who heard him but in a short their conversation turned upon other subjects, and Sentiment bccame as lively and entertaining as ever. Feeling also heard of it, as he was going to this same party, and turned about and went home, for he loved his friend too well to feel in the mood to join in a crowd while he was yet unburied. _.ie next day Sentiment sat down and wrote ^beautiful letter to the berenved wkfclj

Feeling went about

and ^i.-Krted a subscription for her own use. Sentiment published an eloquent obituary notice of his friend, while Feeling paid his funeral expencct. Feeling adopted one of his sons, end educated him, while Sentiment named one of his own after him.

NORTON versus tHOLI^OPK. The Hon. Mr?. Norton, whose name that of a sweet poetess and accomplished woman is familiar to our readers, has recently bccome the edit-rew of the London Court Magaziene and Belle Assemblee. One of her first feats upon this new field of action has been to demolish Mrs. 1 rollop book, which, as may be seen by the following extract from the article—without the slightest departure from female dignity, is done in a very effectual manner: "From this superciliousness at the qualities and accomplishments and behavior of others, one mighl be led to

an extravagant degree af re-

finment in Mrs. T. but of this she certainly makes no display in her writings, win

hare the only things belonging to her that we

uOtie

have the right or the in

clination to treat of. Her manner of telling stories is frequently indelicate and she more than once treats of subjects unbecoming tier sex. Were it for this alone, in a work like ours, mainly intended for female perusal, we shall find ourselves

in duty bound

to express our disapprobation. But we have a still higher aim. We would do what in us lies to prevent the etacerbation or renewal of those national animosities which have unfortunately existed between us and our tr^ns-At-lantic brethren we would render justice to the country which has pioduced Washington Irvinq, and Cooper, and William Cullrn tiryant, and some of the most noble, kind hearted men, and lovely and accomplished women, that we have had the foitune to be acquainted with and we weuld exert ourselves with what wo cannot doubt is a laudable spirit, to repress the uncharitablencss of prejudices and disappointment.

of Mrs. Trollop's faults is. to

describe as peculiar to America, what is

common to Klngland and other countries. We can assure her she need not have crossed the Atlantic to discover raving preachcrs, and fanatic or insane auditors *he will not find

Bicknells's Reporter, j? Coanterftit Detector and Price CorrenttThe only Journal of the Icivditsuedin the-U.S i^j^HEthird volume of this publication \rill:

be commenced, in an enlarged form, and otherwise improved, on the 80th of thepresent month. For it wa solicit the patronage of merchants, hanking institutions, brokers, keepers of hotels, farmers, mechanics, manufacturers, the man of a family, and the bachelor—for, to each and all of' these classes of society.it is our desire and1 design to render tho "Reporter" a valuable and interesting Journal.

The Reporter has been published in tho city of Philadelphia for two years. From 1. the moment the prospectus was issued until the present time, its patronage has been* constantly and rapidly increasing, and it now has a circulation in nearly every '.own and village in Pennsylvania indeed, there-' are few portions of the United Slates where it may not be found. As its subscribers have increased, its character for useful information it contains, it is without a competitor.

The leading features of this publication may he enumerated as follows: The Counterfeit List.—This list, which now occupies 10 closely printed columns, i»

the only complete and accurate list of altf Ihe counterfeit and altered notes on the va. rious banking institutions in the United States that is published in this country. It is inserted in the Reporter once in each month, and is mado up with great diligence and labor—it contains detailed descriptions of all fraudulent notes that are, or have been in circulation in this country, and is, in fact^ the only infallible Detector of Counterfeits. The Editor is in correspondence with the principal Brokers and Cashiers of banks in the United States, and is.thereforo, enabled to furnish the earliest information upon thiA subject.

Price* Current and Review of the JilarkeK —Every aamber contains an accurnlestatement of the prices asked and obtained for all the principal articles offered for sale in Philadelphia, together with a review of the Market, in which farmers, mechanics, families and store-keepers arc interested. This statement is gathered from the ar.lual sales that have taken placo in Philadelphia during the week previous to the day on which the Reporter is issued, and therofore embraces the most authentic intelligence that can possibly be obtained on that head.

Rank J*bte List and List of Rroken Ranla. —Under this head we are enabled to givo every week the rates of discount in Philadelphia on all solvent banks, as well as a correct list of all insolvent broken banks throughout the United Slates. The utmost confidence can be placed in the accuracy of this list, as it is under the special control^of the publisher.

Price of Stock—Gold and Silver.—This portion of the Reporter is devoted loan authentic table giving the prices of the variout description of Bank, Rail-Road, Canal, Insurance, and all other stock, with the value of gold and silver coin of ali countries, and is corrected weekly by Messrs. Alexander Benson St Co. gentlemen who at present are, and have been for many years, more extensively engaged in the purchaec

Jj|

and

sale

of this discription of property, than any other brokers in this section of the country. Political—Weshall endeavor without political bias, to givo enough of all sides to inform the reader of what is going on in the political world.

Foreign vnd Domcnllc Nciet—This department of the Reporter is not neglected We are in the reciptoftheNew York Journal of Commerce, and the New York Courier and Enquirer, the leadiog papers in this country, for obtaining'the earliest foreign intelligence, and those whn will refer to our course for the past year will discover that tho Reporter has generally been in advance of all other weekly newspapers in circulating advices from foreign parts. We make the same reference with regard to local news. If there is any thing wonderful or1 strange that occurs in the United Statcs, the whole bistoryof tho affair is served up promptly through our columns.

Literature, &c.—Our literary department has not been, and shall not be neglected.— Each number of our enlarged slice

I will coo-

tain ao original or selected story, calculaled to entertain and enlighten, with as racy witticisms as the English and American Magazines

afford,

so that those

who

turn away

with fatigue from our markets and our price current, may linger an hour over our literary page—so that Ihe young as well as the old may be gratified and so, in short, that by administering to a variety of tastes, we shall render our paper useful and popular.— Indeed it is our object to render the Reporter a work of real merit, such as will inform, as well as entertain. fi.

The terms of the weekly Reporter are $3 per annitm. The semi-monthly $2, and mootbly |1J28. Single copies 12* cents.
