VEVAY TIMES AND SWITZERLAND COUNTY DEMOCRAT.
A Good Joke,—A travelling dandy gut «p at a tavern in a neighboring town, not many years since, where he concluded to spend the Sabbath. Ho prepared himself to attend meeting, bttl not possessing that very important chattel a watch, and being particularly desirous to cut a steel! dtul i, ho applied to the landlord for the loan if his watch. The landlord, possessing a very powerful alarm watch, very readily complied with tho request, hut previously wound up tho a l arm and act it at tho hour which he supposed would be about tho first prayer. The dandy repaired to church; he arose with all the grace of a finished exquisite, at the commencement of tho prayer, and stood playing very gracefully, as he doubtless supposed, with the :borrowed watch seals, when suddenly he jumped as if ho had discovered a den of rattlesnakes in his pocket; the tchizzing of the alarm had commenced, the people started, Lite dandy made a furious graft at the offending watch with both hands, outside his pocket, and ho attempted to tquerze it into silence, but all in vain—it kept its tir-r-r-r-r—and it seemed to him as if it would never cease: tho sweat rolled off tho poor fellow, bo seized his hat, and making one desperate ofibrt for the door, hurried off with his watch pocket in ono hand and his hat in the other, amid tho supposed laughter of the whole congregation Ho ,probably did not attend Mai meeting in the afternoon.

During the silting of the Democratic National Convention at Baltimore, as wo learn by a latter received since its adjournment, there occurred an incident which is described by all who witnessed it as a most thrilling occurrence. General Carroll, tho venerable compatriot in arms of the old hero of Hermitage, presided over tho deliberations of the Convention. H is scarred . forehead, and yet painful effects of his services in- the field, added to his gray head, and the re- . collection of his unspotted political character, made him the observed of all observers. It 'happened that the Hon* Tilghtnan A. Howard tho Democratic candidate for Governor of Indiana, a DolegatefrotnlbatSlalo, was called upon to address the Convention, which he did in that peculiar and eloquent style which renders him so powerful in debate, and so popular "on the stump.” \ ■ "This certificate General,” ho said, referring to*the Hero of the British Whigs, "who was obliged to get his men to certify that he did not run from the battle field, is now the candidate of Federalism.—I will point you to a soldier, -Mr. Eresideht;'/’! can fee him now in his impetuous youthi with firm step, and devoted enthusiasm, following the great Jackson through the Indian ■wars-r-mingling with him in the bloody fields of Emuefaw, of Talidiga, and of tho Horseshoe, driving the red fiends from their hiding places’ defeating them on their own ground and taking them prisoner in their own towns. I can see him again, how advanced to mature manhood leading a regiment of Tennessee militia, cn the far-famed and immemorial field of New Orleans, when the legions of Great Britain were rolled back upon each other like mighty waves, and when the tremendous and irresistible bravery of American troops forced them to retreat, again and again, leaving tho ground strewn with the dead and the dying. Yes, sir, he was there; and he'needs no certificate to prove that he was there. Tho proofs are to bo seen in his limping gait and scarred and battered frame. But I see him again the honored recipient of the gratitude of his fellow men; having been five times elected Governor of his native State.—And I see him 'now; old and war-worn,and decript; butnottoo old—weak and debilitated as he is—to Como forward and leave his far distant home for his country’s sake. This is the soldier.” Ab Mr. Howard said thia, he laid his hands upon the whitened locks of tho veteran Carroll! The feeling may bo imagined—it cannot bo described. Every Delegate in that vast body arose, and a bright tear trickled down the check of the old warrior, while one cheer upon another, from tho very eoula of those present, repaid tho eloquent speaker. - This is Democratic enthusiasm. Tho way they do things In lllinois,--
We are indebted to the Rev, Dr. Ely, of Philadelphia, for the following humerous anecdote— : true or false. Tho doctor is made to say,—that a brother in the ministry, travelling in Illinois, informed him that, where he put up for tho night, the good lady of. tho house baked her bread in a common baking pan; then boiled her coffee in the same vessel; stewed some pork in the same; then dipped out some of tho fit with a tea cup, on tho inner side of which she put a piece of rag to mako a lamp by which they might sec to ear supper; and then tho traveler’s horse eat his mess of oats out of tho same omnibus of cookery! We have beard of rockers being affixed to broad trays and alternately used for kneading bread and a cradle, —and a lady using the same article for a sheet that she did for a tablo cloth, but the ingenuity of the lady of Illinois, greatly outstrips tho Yankee ladies for expedients, —lieltand Herold.
