A most low, filthy, and scurrilous .attack upon us appears in the Political Seacan ,dycr the signature of “Port and Percy, ’-’ in which"'the writer makes use of the most disgusting 'and low. billingsgate slang tbat'ever was- known to ■escape from tho lips of the verriest mongrel blackguard in existence. * The article is too contcmpible, too*cowardly aimed, to draw from us morn than a passing notice without Jirst being apprised of the source frem whenc it-etnanates, eo lhat we may be enabled to meet the author upon equal footing, and comhat hini with his own dirty weapons- We-know*, not who the writer is, nor do wc fear his ehafis—they fa*] harmless at our feet. But/.whoever he may be', wc now* take the responsibility of ptpnouncing him a base LI All, a dastardly COWARD, and a inostcoiiruma/e SCOUNDREL. (Jar suspicion rests upon one, ond'we think time will exemplify and make 'good our intended reference—that once attained wo shall say, with all onf heart, , :— “Lnyon Macduff; And damn’d be him.lhal Gnt cries, hold, enough." The editor of the Deacon to smooth over the mean, contemptible, and it ugentlesnaaly act, of giving uphis columns to this tirade of abuse and blackguardism, says-:- • “The communication is accompanied by the names of three very .respectable citizens,of.that county, who arc willing to stand responsible for its .contents. 1 Whilst we acknowledge their righA'rir defend thethsclvcp agaiast the uhwar- . ramablc slanders of Mr. Stevens, wo must be 'permitted to say that .we disapprove’ entirely of their mode.of warfare.” Here, too,-ho admonishes them that in future comraunitions written in the same spirit wilUhc . deemed wholly inadmissible. O, most wise confession! Like the truant shoo! boy, being conscious of committing'a 'wrong,.he tells his readers At tefff not\da so any more! • But let us see what prompted)Milton Gregg to do this wrong. The following paragraph'will explain: - ,l Wc fee! urider great obligations to our good whig friends in Switzerland, and shall bo happy - at.nll times to attend to their several interest and wishes, so far as it may’be proper to doso.” Did Mr. Gregg think it was proper in this instance, to admit a scurrilhus and indecent communication in his paper, simply - because it was by the*names of three mponti&/e individuals,-knowing'as he must that they were .violently opposed to us and our paper upon parly grounds, and would not hesitate to Vesorl to the most debasing means to traduce ourVcputation and destroy the only means we have of obtaining a livelihood! Xo, that cannot be. Then ■ it does appearevident that .Ur. Gregg coold not have been prompted by a sense of propriety, but merely from the great obligations he professes to owe to his “good whig friends of Switzerland.” 1 Yes, the paltry sum received from the whigs of this county, for subscriptions to die Political Ideacon, has rendered that s\ect the Jilthy setccr of a .few corrupt and designing individuals, who seek to. destroy our paper But wc disregard their attempts—the V evay Times is eetosd the beach' of such unprincipled scoundrels, • Again, iho editor of the Beacon says, in a very .humiliating tone— „ ■ “It is neiessarv for the future character and usefulness/of the press, that a'reform should be effected in its general mangement. It is timo°io put a check to (hat licentiousness of conduct in the Press which has become its prevailing characteristic, and which is calculated to detract so much from its general.usefulness.” . We must say here, Milton- Gregg has eel a bad example— ho is preaching one doctrine and practising another. After writing the above, he ’ should blush tfith’ehamo.'hmr, down -upon bis bended "tines*, exclaim 0, God!— “Teach mo to feel for other’s woe, - * And hide the fault I see— Thai mercy thoa to others show/ That mercy show to me.” • ’
