Vincenncs Library. It is not generally known by our citi

zens that many shares in this valuable institution are yet to be disposed of, on ap

plication to either of the officers. The Library now contains nearly sixteen hundred well selected volumes, which weie purchased at a cost cf over twenty-five hundred dollars. The shareholders are by the act of Incorporation limited to one hundred and fifty and strange as it may appear, tlierr. are now but twenty individuals enjoying

ibis privilege: and if the purchase money of the books could be divided amongst them, each of the present shareholders would receive for his share, which cost originally eight dollars, one hundred and twenty-five dollars!!! The price of a share now, as it was at the first foi mation of the institution in the year 1 SOI , is but eight dollars, subject to an annual assessment of two dollars far the purchase of books. The Library by permission of lie proper authorities is now permanently located in the City Hall. In a community of free and enlightened people, where every radzM. -?-,t3, and lias a right to expect to see his children capable of holding public offices, and becoming not only useful, but prominent men an institution like this is of importance. It gives to youth a taste for reading before the mind becomes wholly oc

cupied with fiivilous pursuits, and if a bad taste has been acquired, it corrects it and gives solid viands a zest when the palate has become vitiated by lighter reading. We then advise all. especially those who are parents, to purchase immediately a share in the Vince tines J-ibrary. ""B a" S. 1). Touching Incident. During his speech in Faaeuil Nail on Christmas evening. Mr. Hawkins rela'ed an instance of the terrible effects of intemperance, which had recently come under his observation in Worcester county. A victim of this appetite had driven his family from his miserable habitation, and hail parted with every thing he could sell, until only a faithful dog w as ieft, which kept his master from freezing by lying on his feet at night. The wretched man, to gratify the demon of thirst that raged within him, killed his dog, sold his skin to a tanner, and with his proceeds went to his hut. and held his last revel in drunkeness, and in the morning was found dead, from tntemperence and cold. The faithful dog was no longer there to keep warmth and life in him. and when the coroner came to hold an inquest, the only food found in he place was half a pint of meal. who died to save them. We would

'opine that the time is not for distant, when

infidelity and intemperance will be spoken of as things that were, but are not. Cod grant it. Some person has predicted that the Millennium would commence in 1643.

We think it very probable, from the rapid

strides w hich Temperai.ce and Religion are

making throughout the land. If sue!

prove true, we will think the hard times

haJ something to do in bringing it about,

for the reason that the people, thinking it

would be impossible much longer to sustain their bodies as they would wish,

tinned their attention to the saving of their

souls.

The outlay of these twenty, added to the ninety-four, would amount in the aggregate to 610,379 50, being one thousand jour hundred and thirty-nine dollar-, arrl tirenly -eight cents over end edovc the Mate lax ef Knox counh, for the la,t. ye.-.r. It affords me great pleasure to add that the society, although in its infancy, is ; a flourishing condition, ami members are coining in daily to &iaU the pbdge. Mol respectfully, your?, 1L P.
