''01,39 DUTY." 'No, my man, yon must not f.th without permission, cid thsi I nfver give in harbor. If I catch yon fishing again, you fret two dozsn at tht gun; recollect that. You've got your duty to do do, and i have pot mine?.' Well, Jack could not give up his habit, 00 he used to fih at night, and all night onc, outol he tore chains: but it so hao paned that the ship's corporal caut'ht Jaclt i:; the middle watch, and reports him to tne nrst lieutenant. So, tou'ts been fubing again, lir,' ays uuj Duty. No sir, replied Jack, 'not SeLing tnly laying nighl lines.' Oh! that's it,' replifd the first lieuten ant; cnl7 laying night lines! Pray, r.st s the ditlerence? 'Flease, sir,' paid Jack, touching his hit, 'the difference is that it's not the same thing.' 'Well sir, I see btrl one difference, and I'll meet it accordingly. You've got your duty to do and I ve got mine. The boys heads and ears having been pulled about and examined by the master at Brms, they were di?mied, and Jack thought that he had got off; but he was mistaken. After the hammocks had been piped down and it was dark, the bovs were ordpred up by the master-at-arms, Jack wa seized to the gun. and had his two dozen. 'There, sir,' said Old Duty, as they cast he seizing off, 'if fishing at night is not fishing, punishment at night is not punish ment. .Now were quits. ou ve your dutv to do, and I've got mine.' got I dont think that Jaok perceived any mora difference in the two dozen at night t-rne, than the first lieutenant did between dy and night fishing; however, Jac-k did not nVi any for some time afterward. Hut it so happened that the first' lieutennit wa asked on shore to dine with the port admiral; and, although ho seldom ieft the ship, he couid not refuse such e compliment 2nd so he went. As soon a it was dark. Jack thought his absence too good an opportunity not to hare a fish, to he goes into the rnizzen chains, and drop his line. Well, he fished but I don't know whether he cau?ht any;) till the boat was hail-d in which the first !:uten3nt was coming on boarJ, and Jack thought it was lime to haul in h9 line, but, just at that moment there was a jerk, f.rid Jack who knew there was a fish at the bait, could not for th life of him pull
op his line tor you see he was a wSher-ithe
man hesrt and soul, so Jack trusted to Piovidenee, and the first lientenant's going down below a soon 99 he came OD deck. Now, you ee, the ship was laying at i.le lime 'cross the tide, the wind blowing against the current, the starboard side (be ing to leeword, of th wind, but to windward as to the tide) had been cleared away, and manned for the boat and lock mafia ur that iVie Brat lioutenc.nl jould pull to that side, but he was mistaken. Whether it was that the lieutenant wished to have 3 look round the ship, or no4., I do not know, but he pulled scos3 bows, and went round the stern pr,sfing the 1 at board side; as he passed, Jc:k shrunk under ih le of the dead eyeg and lan-yards, hoping he might not not be seen; but the first lieutenant having 'hs clear horizon on th othr idf. prv tiveJ iMe, wnich Jaric hsd half hauled up, zwl having an eye like 5 cat, makes iit J?.c!i -ilo. I see you sir, I see you, Mr. Jams, fishing again sir. Very well,' cried the ftr?t lieutenant from the siern fcheets of the boat, as Us passed by. 'You've got your duty to do and I've got mine.' 'That's as good as two dozen to-morrow morning at muster, thought Jack, who curard his luck, and in a roelancloly mood brgsi to haul up his !in.( which a soon as ho h-.id been discovered, he had let go to the bottom again. Now it so happened; that as Old Duly went up on the ether 9dt hi foot slipped; end how it was I( rant tell, for t!ey 9ry he wan't the least projjery, but down h fell, between the hoAl' gunnel snd ship a side, just like a deep - 3 !e?d and disappeared. There I l ing o few men on deck, there, was not much of a busile there was a dive or two for him with the boat hook, but all in vain. Old Duty was gone. In the meantime. Jack on the other cide, wa slowly hauling up hi line, but ne had not got it half way up when he I "elf a heavy strain, and he thought th-t v lare conger eel had followed the bait s they do sometimes, and he hauled with all his might. At last, who should he bring to the surface of the water but Old Du'y. who had been sucked under the thip's bottom by the tiiJe, and had been hooked by Jack, as he was pulling up. When Jack saw it was the first lieutenant, as he told me, his first iuea was to let him down again; but that was only for a moment. The words of the first Iientenant stijl rang in his e3r?, 'You've got vour duty to do and I've got mine,' and Jack did his duty. He haliocs out that he had caught Old Duty, and the boat shifted round sad tnok him on board. The old fellow was quite senseless: 1-ut, as he had been but a fchort time in the water, he was put to bed and resuscitated by the surgeon. The next morning he was all as if nothing had happened, walking the deck with his right hand in his breaM, and his spy glass under his left arm as usual. Well, wo ail told Jak he was safe thie', vrne, hut Jacii thought otherwise. He hook his head and now you'll iearn vbo was right. 'Jervas, you were fishing last night
against my orders. 'Ycb, air,' said Jerv.i, nnd I catched a first lieutenant,' for Jack had a good deal of fun in hirn. Yea sir, and queer fishes they are sometime,' replied Old Duty; but yon forget that you have also catched two dozen. You've got your duty to do, and I've got mine. Well as you may suppose, there were many of us looking abaft, just to see what would take place, and were not a a little astonished at the idea of bis rewarding Jack with two dozen for saving his life; however, of course, we were mum. Jack was tied up; and the first lieutenant whispered a word into the ear of the master-at-arms, who again whis pered to Williams, the boatswain's mate; and the effect ot that whisper was, that the cat was laid on so ligntly that Jack hardly felt it so lightly, indeed, that the first lieutenant walked away aft, that he might not appear to be a party in the con cern, and Jack was cast off without a tear in either eye, when Old Duty went up to him. You fished last night against my or ders, and you have therefore received your punishment. You saved my life last night, therefore it is my duty to reward you. I could not let you off this punish men!, as it would be making the King pay you for me, instead of my pay ing vou mvself. 1 m not a rieh man. but here's ten guineas for your purse, and here's my gold watch. Spend the first usefully, and keep the other: and observe, Jack Jervas, if ever you are again caught fishing in harbor yen will as surel)" get two dozen for your pains. 1 ou ve got your duty to do, and I've got mine. From the Misssuri republican. OURE FOB CANCER, .St. Charles. May, 1838. .Messrs. Editors: About twenty-throe vears ago, 1 was only twelve years old. 1 discovered a small substance about the size of a pea under the skin of my nose, immediately between inv eves, winch continued to increase until I became so alarmed that I had it operated upon by Dr. M bonnor ot Kentucky, in lb'Jl. After the operation i: increased more rapidly than before, and continued a running sore, and was pronounced u confirmed cancer. Dr. Smith, of New Haven, operated upon it in 1823, using the knife very freely, and laying open tho lower extremity of cartilage and bone, which he scraped, but without any good effect. After the wound healed the etneer increased faster, and run more than before. It was operated upon twice afterwards, always with the same result, increasing faster and running more after each operation. In the mean time, I applied every remedy that was recommended, until I had almost despaired of ever being cured, and not only dreaded the fatal consequences which it then threatened, of depiiving nip of my eyesight, and ultimately of life, but expected to carry with me through my remaining days, however brief, a painful and disgusting sore, and so prominently placed, that it must be the first object noticed by friend or stranger, approaching me. Hut fcri'mateiy, last December, I came to this placr, and was recommended by Ilenrv L. Mills, Esq. to use a strong potash made of the ashes of Red Oak fork, boiled down to tiie consistence of rnotasfjes, 10 cover! the cancer with ir, and about an hour af-1 terwr.rd" to cover the plaster with tar, i which miifl be removed aftr a few days.; an J if any protuberances remained in the! wound, apply more potash to them, and tho plaster Pgain, until they all disappear; ef-l ter which heal the wound with anj-common salvo. This I did a few tims and to my inexpressible satisfaction, I have nothing now remaining of my cancer, bat some few inconsiderable scara being per fectly cured, without the least indication of its ever returning; but I think it my duty to make my cure known to tho pubhe. that, happily, some sufferer like myself, mnv be benefitted by it. THOMAS TVRELL. Curiosity A little Frenchman chanced to breakfast at a tavern with a tall, bony Jonathan, who ate voraciously. The Frenchman was astonished, and asked with a flourishing bow, 'Sare vil you be so polite as to tell me, is dat your breakfast or jrour dinner vat you make." The Yankee at fir3t made no reply, but Monsieur, not satisfied, repeated the question. "Go to the d 1," eays Jonathan, feeling himself insulted. A challenge ensued, and the Kentucky rifle proved too much for the little Frenchman's vitality. While he was writhing his last agonies, Jonathan's compassion was awakened, and he entreated the little Frenchman if there was any thing he could do for him, though it should cost him years to perform it, to let him know and it ehould be done. "O, monsieur," replied the dying man, "tell me, was dat your breakfast you did make, and I will die happy. Jiccounting for Taste.
