We have eeen so many anecdotes of absent mindedness that we thought the subject was pretty well used up. The following from the "Adventures of an Adventurer" as related in the New York Atlas, shows that it is not yet exhausted. I now prepared to leave New York for Providence. On the day previous to my departure 1 met a few choice friends, to take 3 parting glass with them. After dinner we called in cards, and played at whist. There was one gentlemen there who was very fond of the game, but his wife who was mistress and master buth abominated cards, and he never dared to tell that he had indulged. On his return home that night, his wife asked him what had detained him so late. He avoided the truth, and all passed off well for the time and would have done so altogether, but that unfortunately his mind was accustomed to go wool gathering, and he might almost be eaid to live in the past. The following morning at breakfast table, his wif-j asked him to pass the bread. Though his body was at the table his mind was with his companions of the night previous. To the inexpressible astonishment of his wife, he took the bread and butter from the plate (there were a
dozen pieces) and commenced ehufiling them, fancying they were a pack o: cards He then placed them before his lady and aiktd her to cut. The t!ra"gencss of the procedure acted like a spell upon her. Hhe could say nothing. In a couple of seconds her husband took up the bread and nutter and commenced dealing it round as if to four persons. He had nut pone more than enco round before finding tho cards as he imagined them, to stick together, fte adopted the vulgar practice of wetting his thumb on his tongue. A? a matter of course, a considerable quanti ty of butter had gathered upon it. Tho flavor at once restored him to his senses; and I leave you to fancy ins horror at finding eight pieces of bread and butter in his left hand, and four at lour corner of the table, while uelore l.tm eat his partner, not for whist, but worst luck, fur Ufe. in whose face lurpnse and rago were stugeling for mastery. The struggle was of short duration. Rage Eiastered, as it generally does, pro tern, and she exclaim"Oh! you villain you ve been play i T 1 L l ing cards again. lie made a clwan confession. I was entering to take my leave of the lady when the scene com tnenced. I saw it all through the slightly opened door. Of course I made mv-el car.-e at the climax. Oh, how I wished I had been an artist at that moment, to Lave tken the picture from life. It would hare rendered me immortal. Anecdote of Hairy Clay. He was Irav filing in Virginia, and late one evening ar rtfed at a fashionable hotel, m a verv plain farmer-like dress, and stepping L the bar he enquired of tho spruce l.nr keeper if lie could give him a romii. He wae told that the rooms were all occupied, but tint he could have a bed in a room with several others. "Very well," said Mr. Clay, and was shown up thee of four pair of stairs into a room with several common sort of people, already snoring. He "turned in" and was soon sound sileep. In tho morning he arose, and sitting on the side cf his bed, he kept his companions in aroar of laughing, relating humorous anecdote? and jokes. Some of them nquireil of the bar-keeper, when they went down, "what funny old cock" he had put in their room. He could nut tell them, but at the breakfast table they were alike surprised, when a gentleman bonrding there recognized ami saluted him with profound respect as Henry Clay the Senator. The poor bar-keeper was in reat confusion, and lost no time in prepar ing the best room, always reserved for the President and members of Congress, and with many apologies informed him that his room was ready. "Never mind sir," eaid Mr. Clay, "your rooms are all occupied I am perfectly satisfied with my present accommodation." Exchange paper. O. K. Awful Condition. A correspondent of the Fayetteville (N. C.) Obserer, in noticing the census of that town gays "In the juvenile department I find 'i87 unmarried ladies between the ages of sixteen and thirty, and 40G between the gee of ten and 6ixteen. To counterbalance that, we have but IS young men of marriageable age; but ten out of that number are in a situation t!i3t would justify their 'taking the responsibility;' five out of that number have determined to lead a life of single blessedness, and the remaining five are not worth having." A "horrible stale of society," truly. y. O. Picayune. The Hartford Courier gives the following recipe for cheap living: Purchase tx cents worth of dried app'es, and eat one half for dinner and the remainder for supper, drinking a pint of water with each parcel. By morning they will have swollen so much as to leave no room for breakfast. Thus a mm may live on six eents a d3V. The Paixhan Romd. This terrible engine of destruction, although it has been used in the English and French navies for some time, has but btely been introduced into our own. Its powerful efficacy was displayed at St. Juan de Ulloa, lieyrout, and at St. Jean doVVcre. The new ships in the British Navy include, as a permanent portion of their armament, a number of bombesnnon. adapted to this new and destructive missile. The Paixhan bomb, instead of describing a curved line like the common shell, is thrown horizontally, and with a? much
certainty as solid shot from a thirty-two pounder. The destructive effects of these bombs are described with a fearful minuteness of detail which leaves the impression on my mind that nothing is told which has not been done -and witnessed.
When thrown horizontally thev will crush. strike to pieces, and tear open the side of a vessel, with a terrible shock. "If they remain in the side," savs the account. their explosion, acting like a mine, will open large breaches, the irregular fractures of which, extending below the waterline, will make a passage through which the water will rush in, as though a dyke were suddenly broken. If a bomb should en ter amast.it will overturn it, together w ith s yards, top and tigging. Should the bombs pass entirely through the ship's side, then they will produce their effect etween decks, in the midst of tho com bats, the artillery and munitions; and thev will scatter around showers of iron, and insupportable volumes of 1110 i e and flame thev will comnletelv destroy a fabric of wood, much more easily than that of stone they will rip up the deck, set every thing on tire, and cause dreadful ravages everv where. Home of these bombs are of one hun dred and fifty and two hundred pounds weight. In addition to their explosive tcrrois they are charged a so with a certain composition, which, upon bursting, give? forth such a noisome and even pois onous sine. as to render a ship unmhtibitaoie. i i I?eprescnt.it'.vc, S A MFEL JUDAIC JOHN myeks.
