The Ilemit Briber cf Scala Greca. Some time ah.ee, a hermit of reputed snciity took up las abode in a cavern on the accent of ;ho Ecala Greca near Syracuse, supporting himself, as wag supposed by the charity of caaual passenger.6; he 1 inh&bite.l this cave for many years, during which time travellers between SyraCU59 and Catania were cften missing As Sicily has always had the reputation of abaunding in robbers, it was supposed that these personi had fallen in such hands, md had been murdered; some of them were a?-n, for the last time, in the neizh-
oorroou ot trie acaia Ureca, but no one suspected the pious hermit. It happened that a Gentleman riding alone to Syracuse, waj i-i the middle of the pas accosted by the huly father, who asked, as ustisl, for
char;;y; as these demands from euch sub
jects are never or rarely refused, the horse
man stopped to make a donation: he ob
2rved that the hermit extended his left
band for tf e gift, keeping his right crossed Upon his breast; this would, perhaps in it-
sen exci'.ec suspicion, but an accidenta
raotion, or perhaps a premature attempt,
ciscovered to the astonished traveller that
the pious man grasped a formidable stiN etto, whilst he kept his eye fixed on him
with peculiar earnestness. There was no
time to be lost; he dropped his purse as if
oy acciaent, and, as the othr stooped to pick it up, knocked him don with the batt en l of his whip, and pnuiiig his ber?e to rail spaed, soon arrived in Svrstuie, where he to'd his iaie, procured asistanc from the msgistrstes, 6nd returned in search of t': hermit, who in th
meantime, had effected his escape: but in the cave were found various hiding-places, containing money and goods to a great amount; many of the articles were afterwards recowniied as belonging to people who were missing. Surprising Property of OIL The ac
tion ot oil, in stopping the violent ebulli
tmw. r . : .
uuu n ai'uua suusianccs, is truly sur-
pnsmg. It is well known, that if a mix
ture of sugar, honey, or the like, be boiling upon the lire, and in danger of rising
over the sides of the vessel, the pouring
in oi a mile oil makes it immediately subside. In many cases, the marking a circle round the inside of a vessel in which a liquor of this kind is to bo boiled, with a piece of hard soap, shall, like a maic
ring, confine the ebullition to that height,
and not suffer it to stir any farther. This
is wholly owing to the oil or fat contain
cd in the soap; but there is, besides these.
another very important use of oil, on a
like occasion, which is, the pouring a lit
tie of it on any metallic solution, while
making; this restrains the ascent of the
noxious vapors, preserves the operator

gives redoubled strengtii to ihe inentrum. Pliny has mentioned an extraordinary ef
fect of oil, in stilling th surface of water
when it is agitated with wives, and the
use mads ol it by the divers for this purpose.

HE improvement consists in the simplicity of its construction, the small space it occupies
the expense saved in the first cost of the engine,
anu the quantity of fuel saved. It, in the first place, will not cost over cne-half as much to manufacture them, will weigh not more than half as much, will occupy not half the space, will save much fuel, and is more powerful than the present reciprocating engine, and withal, is so simple in its construction that with five minutes' explanation, any person can perfectly understand its principle. Applicable to any thing, but peculiarly adapted to all mill and shop purposes. June 26th. 1810 n3-tf. The Louisville Journal, ft. Louis Republican end Wabash Courier, will insert the above six
