muse of the PEOPLE is emphatically
identified to expose the frauds and impositions practised by Van Buren's unscrupulous stipendiaries: and for the other con
siderations which the FARMER, the
MECHANIC, and the MERCHANT, will not, on reflection, fail to appreciate the success of our undertaking is of the first importance. In a land abounding in all the elements of personal thrift and national advancemen, it is with deep concern that every sound Republican ha witnessed the prtrlv
schemes and diversiued experiments of
men in power, blighting, poisoning and leading to embarrasment and ruin, every calling and industrious pursuit no one prospering, Van Buren's office-holders excepted. The pd of nature has bountifully blessed the toil of the Husbandman, but the Van Buren spoils p lie y has destroyed and proscribed the reward of honet labor and enterprise rewarding: with the People's money, a venal and deceptive retinue of party editors, who. under the guise of false pretenses to "Democracy," disregard the pinlie welfare and this partv now in power, seem to calculate upon ren
dering Van Buren the jfC7 Legislature ! th.e Trf.asvrer ! ! and in. fact, the GOVERNMENT ! ! ! "1 We oppose the Humbujrofers, and submit this brief outline to induce essential patronage. We believe, that with correct and full advisement, every freeman's heart, should at this momeni become a ciiidel of Whig Strength. Jf'e are willing to do our dutv as faithful sentinels on the Watch Tower. As we feel no luhcwannncss, we have no doubts. Col. Ethan Allen, (father of the writer) is not unknown to the readers of the history of that glorious Revolution, which tyranical foreign rulers occasioned. The writer of this served in the army of the U. States during the late war, and with his humble abilities sustained that government for which his father fought, and saw "a little service." The Whig principles of this concern, will not be found of recent growth. Reared Whigs, the editor and publishers do not claim to be so under any mere partizan
admission; we "go ahead for Harrison upon our, and his avowed principles, which the people of the Wabash valley, suffering under impositions hostile to him and themselves, should, (and it is hoped, will) stand forward to propagate and uphold. Finally, we believe, that the principles of Constitutional equality and public good, which guided Washington-, Jffferson, and Madison, will guide Harrison, and restore happiness and prosperity to the country. We believe the arbitrary financial policy which Van Buren In- adopted
to aid the spoils-men s creed oi felt ajr
giandizement. must cease to operate a
safe national currency be sanctioned
merit and worth alone be confided in, and the responsibility of public officers to the
sovereign people be aain established, if
Harrison be elected; of which, with
proper vigilence, we have no cause to doubt. Only let Indiana his old friends
and neighbors, do their dutv, and V an
Buren can never be prefercd, known as he
now is.
