From information derived from all quarters we feel assure! that the present Hoard o! This appears to bo the prevailing desire not only in most parts of 'die State, but generally muIi the members of the Legislature. u uh a law exceptions they h ive, rendcred themselves o.moxious to and odious in the eyes of the the people Legislature, by their extravagant expenditures, and squandering of the public money in a manner and on works lhat will not for vears produce a revenue to the state;and by locating the different works more with the iew of enriching their own pockets or that of their immediate friends. than for the purpose of benefitting the public or lessening tiie burthens of the people. All these tilings can and should be corrected during the present bession, as no doubt they will be, i fall reports that have reached us be true. Heretofore the complaints of the people have been oniy uttered in murmurs, the precursors of a storm, which is now bursttog over their heads in all its fury. The people are determined to avert the oneroai taxation, which is unavoidable if the present slate of things is per;nit:ed to exist, and they have at least some Represen tative win are learless enougn to uis-v-h-irre their duties and to represent their the present legislature v isnes. If she will, the will, You may depend on't; It' she won't she won't, And there's the endou't. A Woman" a Firmness. A case of a novel character occurred on Friday in the United States Circuit Court at Providence. The Providence Courier says: A vountr
lady of a very interesting appearanca ana respectable character was brought up by ihe marshal for refusing to be sworn, and to give her testimony befoie the grand jury. Justice Story addressed her in a verv eloquent and respectful manner, and, with all the kindness of a father, urged upon her the duty and the necessity of persona giving testimony to promote the cause of justice and the public salety. He inform ed her, that, however painful to him, the law left no discretion for him to exercise and that, if she persisted in her refusal, ihe only course he could pursue was to commit her tojail, and to keep her there till she should consent to take the oaih. True to her woman's nature, she replied instanter, and without hesitation, that 6he would go to jail ralher than be sworn, and was condemned accordingly. It seems that a young gentleman, whose addresses she was not inclined to favor, liar written her two lttpr, whioh 'she sutlered to remain in the post officer. Another young gentleman look one of the letters from the post office and delivered it to the lady, who received il with the seal broken, and the young lady was summoned by the letter icriter as a witness against the letter bearer, and, from some cause best known to herself, she refused to make oath. Since the above was in type, we learn lhat the young lady has been liberated, and has returned to her friends. Boston Transcript of Saturday.
