Saturday, Oct" 1837. The Knox county Agricultural Society held its regular Fail meeting and exhibition on Friday the 13ih inst. The farmers of our County manifested an increased interest in the objects of the Society, and exhibited the evidences of their devotion to its welfare by a handsome increase of the list of members. We have been informed that this is the first formed Agricultural Society in the Wabash Valley, and we rejoice as well at its prosperity, as we feel proud that oar couutv took the lead a". 1 atfordod an example in a matter of such obvious utility. Indeed, we have a right to boast the old Post incennes, and the old county Knox, however each may have appeared to be occasionally behind the times, have regularly ami steadily, not only gone a-head with useful improvements, but generally set the example in all but empty show and wild speculation. The late meeting of the Society exhibited an improvement in stock, and a determination on thtf part of our farmers to sustain and increase that improvement; a laudable industry and increased acquisition of skill in all family manufactures; and the articles exhibited by Messrs. Dunning, Jhs, Elliott and other liberal and enterprising mechanics, gave the strongest evidence ol the skill, industry nnd enterprise of our townsmen. But having understood that the Society was somewhat cramped in its funds, we t3ke the liberty to suggest that in all such cases it is usual for the citizens of the county-town in which an Agricultural Society meets, to assist its funds by a liberal subscription; and tfiat instead of raising a purse tor a horse-race, it would be more conducive to the trade of Viiieennos, to the prosperity of its inhabitants, and to the morals of its youth, to make a purse for the Agricultural exhibition. And in addition (the spirit of exhortation being now upon us,) wo would further observe that tins is a matter well deserving the attention of those of our citizens who are looked to for example as being the more aged and experienced, the more moral and religious, the more wealthy and wise. For if these and such as these will not en courage by the example of their presence and by the support of their contributions, the moral and profitable, the innocent and beneficial pleasures and labors of an Agricultural exhibition and fair, it becomes a matter of course that the race path and its worshippers should take the lead. In answer to your inquiries I have to state, that the transactions to which you allude occurred at Fort Mitchell, Alabama, and not in Florida as you were informed. I arrived at Fort Mitchell on the steamer Anna Calhoun, from Appalachicola, the boat having on board freight for the Initial -Si nes Army; the freight on which amounted to about one hundred dollars. When the amount of the charge was made known to Skinner, who was acting as Quartermaster for the Failed States; he (Skinner, toid W. W.
