1'roui the Baltimore Aint-ricun, May 13. Plague at Tripoli. The Portsmouth (Eng.) Chronicle of April 3d, (tlie latest paper received in this
country,) lias the following: A e Have letters anil papers lrom Malta to the 11th ult. They represent the state ofthe plague at Tripoli according to the last advices to be unmitigated. It was dillieulr for want of official returns, to estimate the actual mrrtality, but it is believed to be not less than 1U0 daily, and the number of persons w ho have fallen victims to the disease from the commencement is stated to be upwards of 30,000, a great number, considering the population of the Kegoiiey. One Sheikh, who was called tm to produce 3G men, could only produce one besides himself; another had only seven alive out of 150; a third found with difficulty 330 out of 1,000, which was his contingent; and thus tlie formation of any army to act against the Sheikh Wiui',' i. w ho is strongly posted in the ('liai.Ln mountains was found impracticable, 'i'he disease is said even to attack animals, many horses having died with the usual swelling, in fact the horrors and miseries ofthe place are beyond description, and the present visitation is a final stroke of misfortune to that devoted country. Many of the European Consuls have left the place, and among them Consul fi'erien.l Woriington, who had taken his family to Malta for safety, although he himself waited only a favorable wind to return to Tripoli. A t Malta ho less than 100 were in the Lazaretto, but not the slightest symptom of plague was evinced. We refer the reader to our eolumes for a knowledge of the spreading c flee Is of the "experiment." All the banks in NewYork have stopped payment all the hanks in I'altimort all the I'anks in Philadelphia including the bank ofthe United States all the banks in New Haven except the city bank nearly all the banks on the Hudson river ail the banks in Washington o.-.eept the bank ofthe .Metropolis all the banks in Wilmington and all the banks in Pittsburgh, Wheeling and Cincinnati. Of course wc cannot doubt, that there will be a universal suspension of specie payment from one extremity ofthe country to the other. Were Congress now iu session a national bank would be created iu less than four wcks. J.oii. Jour n 1. From tlie Tiee. Criminal Court S'dciJc. The trial of Peynolds, accused of killing a man named Parre, which has been (lending for some days, terminated yesterday by the young man shooting himself in prison with a pistol. The coroner having been called to inspect the body, convened a jury of six citizens, assisted by Doctors Luzenberg and J. E. Kerr. The medical gentlemen, having examined the body, ded thr ball had pierced the roof ofthe intuitu anu v.'i i vai stopped in the bacii ol the h. ,i air im; ;ur rendered a verdict that the deceased had voluntarily accomplished his death in this manner. Til? Coroner's proceedings having been transmitted to the criminal Court, the verdict was recorded on its journal. 'i'he news of the suicide spread through the city, and collected a large concourse of people in the vicinity of the jail. A strange rumor was circulated lor time anion"- the crowd, and found some minds weak enough to receive it. 'I'l us sunide it was sa is notion"' but a trick to snatch a culprit lrom justice, ana save i. lrom merited punislimont a ing to a rich ami respectable man fain elongy the mi v one lit to be meniiueii to see n u nc i dead or alive." Several voices cried out, "let us see the both '. let us see the body'.' But the sheriff knew the nature ant! extent of his duties, and properly refused to gratify such a misplaced curiosity. Ho directed the corpse to be put into a carriage and conveyed to the house ofthe family. This act ofthe sherilf seemed to confirm the suspicions of the crowd. No act of outrage or insult, however, was oll'ered to the police. But during the whole fore noon, the clamor continued and the multitude concluded that because they had not been permitted to identify the body, a cheat had been committed by the civil power; ami this some of them persisted in believing, notwithstanding the high character of the sheriff and his ollieers, nottandi two respectable physi the Coroner ami six reputable citizens had all declared, after a rigid investigation, the nature r'r tlie easr, and notwithstandingthe mother of the deceased had appeared among the crowd iu all the anguish that her situation would naturally occasion, making her way through the mass to the prison, where she fell down and fainted on the dead body of her son! The multitude finally dispersed in quietness. ....-?- A Noble Act. ir7Prior to the recent Presidential election a bet of an. tintsa id dollars was made by John A. Children and misers are always tickled with what shines, 'i'he Olobe, arpirent ly in a paroxysm of delight, but blind to the sunerings of this great country, and deaf to cries of woe, parades the lollowing article as tlie lirst under the editorial head: IMTORTS AND EXPORTS OF SPECIE. The truth is tlie dlobe and its managers are pushing us upon ihe experiments ol Old Spain ami of the middle ages. an experiment which reduced Spain from one of the most exalted positions among the great nations of the earth, to want, and beggary, and misery. It is an old experiment which ruined Spain, and is ruining us.
