A FRIEND. I.i t adverse winds around us How, Ami fortune's frowns attend; But deep despair wc ne'er ghall know. Whilst earth affords a friend. When all our brightest hopes depart. And lift s best prospects end. There's notoingthat can cheer the heart, Like wisdom and a friend. In friendship many joys we find, Yet friendship sorrow sends; For gloomy grief o'erwhelms the mind, In parting with our friends. Besides nn insult has i's sting When enemies contend; But insults double anguish bring W hen coming from a friend, But ev'ry sweet conceals its gall Our brightest hopes but tend To disappoint: so after all There's nothing like a friend.

Ltschixo Liw. Judge Lynch holds too manv courts in nor Southern country; by and by it will supersede the laws of the land altogether. We observe in & Tennessee paper, that a man

was lately taken up for stealing, and he had the

choice offered to him of ho.ng Lynched or sent to jail. lie chose the former, when they stripped him and gave him a hundred lushes .and put him in a sort of a canoe on the Mississippi, and set him adrft with a loaf of bread and I've dollars. This proceeding shows a singular mixture of cruelty and kindness, and as the follow had his choice, it is not ns bad as it would otherwise have been. But so many precedents as we lately have had u nd to waken the respect of the people for the regular laws of the land. When such occurrences happen, thev do not rrenorallv -jive a man his chui.v;

and, no matter what his crime may be, he has

A Pnzzlc for a Postmaster. Sometime last spring, Mr. 1 , of this city, who had been wintering in the AYcst, was presented with an ear of a new and very remarkable species of Indian corn, which came from the Koeky -Mountains. Wishing to send some of the seed to his father a substantial f armer of Oneida County he enclosed a single grain

The Pest Master was puzzled. He knew

not what to charge. It was not a double letter, because there was but a single piece

of paper. And the law had made no provision for the postage on corn. Coats, indeed, had been mailed, and t-o had shirts the latter especially by the Western

members of Congress, liut then, so far

as the worthy Post Master knew, they had always been franked. Besides, if they had not been, a shirt was no more like a grain of corn than a grain of corn was like shirt. And the worthy functionary, to do him justice, could sec very little resemblance between them.

He was thoroughly puzzled for want of

a precedent. But, as time ami tide wi; will wait for no man, and as Mr. 1)
