An old gentleman ot ermont has told us an anecdote of Ethan Allen, the revolu tionary hero, which we have never seen in print, but which is nevertheless histo rically true. About forty years since, Al len was sued for a note oi about one hundred pounds. As it was not convenient for him to pay it, he employed Chitten den. the lawyer, to manage me case in Court, and get it put over to the next term VV hen the case came on, Chittenden ac cordingly appeared, and as the note was signed by a witness, who lived at a distance, he got up and denied the signature, knowing that the w itness could not be produced during the session, and he should thus obtain the delay his client wished. The denial of the signature therefore was a mere finesse, and petfectly understood by the Court; but Allen chanced to be in the court house at the lime, and he viewed the matter in a more ser ous light. Rushing up to the bar of the Court, and clenching his gigantic fists, he made the following address: "Lawyer Chittenden! I did not employ you to come here and tell a barefaced lie! I did sign the note, and I won't deny it, may it please your honors! that's my signature, and that's a good note. I honestly owe the money, ar.v. mean honestly to pay it. All I want is that your honors should put it over to the next Court, and by that time I shall have the cash from IJoston, and will pay every farthing of it." The result was that by consent of parties, the case was continued to the next term. Such were the notions of honesty entertained by a Soldier of the olden times, that he could nf Inrn tn ilrnii the -If " C ........ ,,.,,. 7. ."l. o lr.-,r. Mr. Hiram Hull, the extensive whip Manufacturer in that place, having an elegant whip finished as a present for Mr. Webster, this opportunity was taken to present it to him, which was appropriately done by the Hon. Patrick Boies. It was pleasantly remarked by Mr. Uoiei; that if Mr. Webster's friends could not give him the reins, they would give him a ivhip; to which Mr. Webster facetiously replied, that so long as the people entrusted him with the whip, lie would see that rtitis should not want for suitable monitions to keep in the right track. Patriot. -- No Bank Party. Arkansas. We learn from the Arkansas Advocate that the Legislature of that State has passed a law establishing "The Real Estate Bank of Arkansas capital of the latter 1, 500,000. The Legislature is composed ot a large majority of Van Iiuren men, and thenacts, as" above illustrated, show the sincerity of their professions of being "no bank party'." The Legislature has also parsed a law for codifying the laws of the State, and authorizing the (iuvcrnor to employ two persons to perform the duty. Whig. There has been upwards of 82.500,000 due by Mexico to merchants in New Orleans, for many months past, and there will be about SI, 500, 000 due in January next. i he loss ot so large an amount to our merchants would almost be a public calamity, as it would seriously a fleet the co-Tm"rc;al relations subsisting in New Orleans; yet that loss is almost unavoidable, should the present state of affairs con tinue between Texas and Mexico. New Orleans Times. & Beivarc of the Destroyer. The history of Jesse Bledsoe, who recently died at Nicofrdoch.es, in Texas, presents striking example of greatness. He began his career as a lawyer and statesman, in T.p-rino-ton. Kv. where he was the chief and formidable rival of Clay. He was at different periods a member of the State T..o-isl.itnre. and a Senator in Congress Law Professor of Transylvania Universi tv and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Kentucky. No man stood high er in the State as a polititian and jurist ihnn he did: and none except Clay, ever wielded with such entire mastery and con trol the judgements and leelings of ht auditors when speaking. Yet, with all hi greatness, the spirit of intemperance scia

height whereon his oenitis placed him, dried up his urulerstanditttr, and made him a miserable outcast and wanderer. Ac 10 Orltans Advertiser. Tf'eapona of Jf'ur in England. Dr Humphrey, of Amherst College, mentions in his account of Woolwich Arsenal, that i; contains 517.000 pieces of ordnance, an no less than two millions of homh shells and cannon halls, all neatly painted and piled up in one of the buildings, ami ten thousand setts oi artillery ami tiragoon harness, which may be put in requisition in an hour s notice. ? e." " h"Richard Harrison, first Auditor of the Treasury, and the first Auditor appointed by Hen. Washington, has been removed from office, to give place to a noisv partisan. Having been a patriot or a soldier of the revolution, is no recommendation in these degenerate times. The principles of that revolution having been sacrificed by the present rulers, why should the men of the revolution and companions of Wash ington be retained? A. i. Star. .-..r f e It appears that the extent of Texa and the neighboring provinces comprises nine hundred and one thousand square miles, or one hundred and ninety-two mill ions two hundred and forty thousand English acres; of this amount one hundred ami sixtv-five square miles, or one hundred and f.mr millions live hundred and sixty thousand English acres belong to Texas (proper.) fe The entire population within the limits of the United States, Indians included, amounts (as nearly as could he ascertained in 1830.) to 1G,OSO,000. The number of Indians is supposed to be 100,000. Long-Inland Farms. Alderman Ingraham stated in the course of debate in the board of aldei men, of New York, that upwards of two hundred thousand dollars had been ollered for the Long Island farms those grounds cost the city, a few years since, onlv about six thousand dollars. ..-.e-'&e Nashville newspaper mail. We have been told by a passenger in the stage that about three or four bushels of newspapers were picked up on the Nashville and Lou isville mail rout between Bowling green and Elizabethtown, on that part held under contract by Dr. Edmonston; the gentleman who picked up the above papers,! o fie red them next day to the driver of the J stage, who refused to take them, alleging that he had mails enough.
