Potatoes. H lien a particular kind ol potatoe has become known for its excel lence, that kind is used lor propagation but after a few years, it is observed to de generate, and lose the qualities which at first distinguished it. This is probably owinjr to the method of propagation. 1 he potatoes themselves or, in other words, the roots ol the plant are used for seed instead ot the true seed, which i annually produced in the small berries on the stalks. Thus the potatoe wears out, in a manner amialotrnus to that ot the Iruit of jjraltod trees. aneties ot tlie potatoe. which have been recently obtained trom the seed berries, will admit of beinir pro pagated, for several years, by planting the potatoe itselt. 1 he ground hetore, plantin ST, should be thoroughly pulverised; the manure should be well fermented; the po tatoes should be planted whole, and not deprived of their first shoots. Tar for Shrrp. A gentleman who keeps a large flock of sheep, says that during the season of grazing he gives his sheep tar, at the rate of a gill a day to every twenty sheep. He puts the tar in troughs, sprinkles a little tine salt over it and the siieep consume it with eagerness. This preserves them from worms in the head, promotes their health and is thought to be a specific against the rot. Bolts in Horses. V traveller informs us that the stage drivers on the routes leading from Albany to the western parts of the 5tate of New York in giving water to their horses on the road mix a little wood ashes with their drinks which they say, effectually against bolts. Culture of the Potato Onion Fresh manure i hiahlv injurious to every kind of bulbous root; a sandy sod, with a drained bottom is the best; lut any eoo.1 ground will answer that is free from spring near the surface. The ground should be dug and well broken to the depth of two fret if possible, and a composition spread four inches deep on the surface, composed of the following mateiials: Well rotted cow dunir, oiip fifth, or equal parts. (rev sand if shelly, so much the better, one fifth, eipnd parts. Turf mould, one fifth, do. Good sound fresh earth, one fifth, do. Coal ashes, one filth, do. The bulbs should be laid in rows fourteen to sixteen inches apart, and sit or seven inches from one to another in the row; they should be barely covered with the hoe in the first inslauce. as they must have time to strike and swell before thev are incumbered with a weicht of earth. Plant the bulb in September, October, November, and December, and rover them gradually until a mound is raised about si inches hiuh. and four or five inches broad at, the base, aceordim; to the size. In the month of May, or perhaps in April, the onions mav be airain uncover ed and exposed to the sun, and remain uncoven until they are ripe. This practice accelerates their arrival at maturity, and greatly diminishes the trouble in savins; them. In taking up the onions, great care. i required not to seperate the small bulbs which grow in clusters on tin" top ot the large ones; these, might be removed a few weeks before vou dig out the large bulbs. Thev f-hould be planted again in masses, taking care to remove any of them that may have become soft or decayed; in this way they nourish and assist each other: but if bv anv accident the clusters should be broken, they may lie planted separate ly.
