Alter all, there is no remedy equal to old ThcIhvaH's put a hot potatoe into the pntwnt's mouth, and he 11 speak quite plain enough. A new jointing machine has been invented in London, which is described a3 follows: "Th machine is put in action by two men working with the ordinary windlass, the same as the common crane; and the time being kept by the most accurate mode of checking, namely, the vibration of a pendulum, there were eleven copies perfected on each side in the astonishingly short space of five seconds; at which speed, extending the calcula tion to the extreme result, the process would be 7,920 conies perfected in one hour. This extra ordinary speed of production, should the machine be applied to newspaper printing, would be an invaluable acquisition. Tk-e arost lucky accident on record is that of a
jmw and aged woman, who earned u scanty maintenance bv knitting. On coming one day to "llic end of her worsted," she found the ball bad lx-en
wound on a piece of an old newsiiaiier, which cu riosity led her to read, and she discovered that il contained an advertisement respecting herself, as lieir to a large property. Old Hue ft tiers. Short Courtship, A few davs aero a disconso late Benedict, of Philham, tired of single blesse ness, waited upon the widow of a late well known character, Black Tommy at (iainsburgh, w ishing to speak with her a few words. Of course he wiu desired to walk in. After a short colloquy, thi business of the gentleman was broached lie want ed a housekeeper, and had been recommended to her. Well,' replied the dame, 'what family have you? 'Oh, only myself.' But what house, room have you?' 'Oh, as to that, I have a sitting room and one bed-roojn.' 'Ah, but where am I to sleep then! 'Why, I was thinking we had better be married first.' After a little consideration, a bargain was struck ana on .Monday last the happy couple w ere join ed in the holv bands of matrimony. Jliirx Mtxxenger. l tarn limes. Anoldladv was complaining a few days ago in the market, of the excessive liiuh price of provisions. -It is not only meat that is so enormously dear, said she, -but I cannot obtain flour tor a pudding for less than double the usual price, and they do not make the eggs half so large as tliev were used to be!' Sign.' A being covered with rags and dressed in five jackets, all of which tailed to conceal his raggedncss, bolted into a store on Exchange street a few davs since with the exclamation of. Worse than I look bv ! Well I've, let myself for fourteen dollars a month, and find mvself.' To do what!' asked the principal of the estab lishment. 'To stand on the corner for a japer mill sign Cash for Hag,' that's all. Rochester Republican. Independence of the Farmer. The merchant or manufacturer may be robbed of the reward of his labor by the changes of the foreign or domestic market, entirely beyond his control, and mav wind up a year in which be had done every thing which intelligence and industry could do to insure success, not only without protit. but often with an actual diminution of capital. The strong arm of mechanic industry may be enfeebled or parulvcd by the prostration of those manufacturing or com mercial interests to whose existence it so essentially contributes, and on whom in turn it so essentially depends. But what has the intelligent and industrious farmer to fear! His capital is invested in the solid ground; he draws on a fund, w hieh. from time immemorial has never failed to honor all just demands; his profits may be diminished ined, but never wholly suspended; bis success de pends on no mere earthly guarantee, but on the assuran e of that great and ben ficient Being. ho has declared that while the earth is under neath, seed time and harvest shall not cease. The young ladies of Jefersomiile, la. lately took occasion to illuminate their town and make other lemonstrations of rejoicing for the exodus of an old bachelor named Fischli, who owned the land on which the tow n is built. This old -dried apple,' it seems, had sold out his six hundred acres at a great price, and quit the premises; and as be hai' most obstinately refused heretofore, either to improve his property, or bis condition by renouncing his single cursedness for any of the fair damsels living on his dominion, the slighted beauties burnt all the tar barrels and tallow candles thev mid muster when he took his departure. They did right; and it is to be hoped that such an exam ple will ocrate salutarily upon the brotherhood f crusty old bachelors. W himsical Horse. There is a very fine horse in the possession of !Sir Henry Meux and Co., the minent brew ers, w hich is used as a dray-horse but is so tractable that he is left sometimes w ithout restraint to walk about the yard, and return to the stable, according to his fancy. In the yard there are also a few pigs of a peculiar breed, which arc fed on grains and corn, and to these pigs the horse has evidently an insuperable objection, which is illustrated by the following fact: There is a deep trough in the yard, holding water for the horses, to which this horse goes alone w ith his mouth full of corn, which he saves from bis supply. When he reaches the trough, he lets the corn fall near it on the ground, A when the voung wine approaches to eat it, (for the old ones keep aloof) he suddenly seizes one of them by the tail. pops him into the trough, and then capers about the yard, seemingly delighted with the frolicThe noise of the pig soon brings the men to his assistance, who know, from experience, what is the matter, while the horse indulges in all sorts of intics, by way of horse-laugh, and then returns quietly to the stal.de. In digging a pit for a reservoir in Broad street. in the city of Boston, the workmen came to a quantity of tar at a depth of fifteen feet, which must have, been placed there ages ago. It was di posited among timber, which had been place as a foundation for buildings, and it looke as fresh and glossy as if just deposited, fin be ing exposeed to the air it melted ami flowed down emitting a pungeant turpentine ordor.
