Clans;, clang the massive anvils ring; Clang, lscr hundred hammer! swing; I. ike tlie llumder rattle of a tropic ky, The mighty blows still multiply, C!u(.', clang, Say, brother of th fhi'ky brow? What sr your strong: arms forcing row, Tha coulter of the kindly plow; Sweet Mary mother, hint our toil ; May its broad furrow slill unbind To genial rin, to mn and wind The most benignant toil. Clang, clang, our coulter't course shall be On many a sweet and sheltered lea. By many a streamlet s silver tide. Amidst the sour of morning birds, Amidst the low of sauntering herds. Amidst soft breezes which do stray Through woodbine hedges and iwact May, Along the green hill's side. When real Autumn's bounteous hand IVitb wide spread glory clothes the land. When to the Tallies from the brow Of each resplendent slope it roused A rud!y sea of living gold VVa bless, we bless the PLOW. Clang, clang again, ray mates, what glows Beneath the hammer's potent tdows, Clang, rlang we forge the giant chain Which hears the gallant vessel's strain Midst stormy winds and adverse tides; Feeured by this the good ship braves The rocky roadstead, and the waves Which thunder on her sides. Anxious no more the merchant se-s The mist drive dark before the breeze, The storm rlo:id on the hid; Calmly he rests, though far away In boisterous climes, his vessels lay, Reliant on our skill Say, on what sands these links shall deep; Fathoms beneath the solemn di ep; By Afric's pestilential shore, By many an ice berg:, lone arid hoar, By many a palmy western nle, Batting in Spring's perpetual smile, ly stormy Labrador. Say, shall they feel the vessel reel, When U the Lattery's dreadful peal The crashiug broadside makes reply, Or else, as at the glorious Nile, Hold grappling ships, and strive the while For death or victory! Hurrah clang, clang once more, what glow? Dirk brothers of the frge, beneath The iron tempest of your blows, The furnace's red breath? Clang, clang a burning shower clear And brilliant of bright sparks is poured Around and up in the dinky air, As our hammer s fore the SWOHD. The sword ! a name of dread ; yet when Upon the freemen's thigh 'tis bound, While for bis altar and his heart, While for the land that irave him birth, The war drums roll, the tempests sound, How sacred is it then !
