"A five o'clock, yesterday afternoon, Mr. Barton, Charge H'Affairs of ihe United States of America, addressed n formal demand to the Due de Broglre. Minister for Foreign Affairs of the King of tha French, far his passports. Mr. Barton stated lhat he made this application ia consequence of the non-performaoee, by the French Government, of the treaty of July, 183!, (thnt for Ihe American indemnity, so well known.) As the sun in all its splendor was peeping over the eastern bills, a newly married man exclaimed, '-The glory of the world ii rising!" His wife, who happened to be getting tip at the moment, taking the compliment to herself, simpered eul, What would you say, my dear, if I bad my new tilk gown no?" A testy old gentleman was incessantly pestered by his neighbors, with eoquiries after his health. At last, losing all patience with Ihe mot assiduous of these enquirers, 'Tell your master," said he to a servant, "with my compliments, that I am pretty well this morning, and shall continue so for twenty roomings to came." History of the halt (far.--We understand that General Armstrong has nea rly completed his History ot the Late War, and, being a friend of Mr. Van Buren, has consented to introduce a chapter in which Gen. Harrison is severely attacked. and the book, we learn, is to be hurried through in time for the election. Ouronly complaint is. that Gen. Hariisn has not t een sufficiently attacked by his opponents, for it can do no barm to his fame and public services if unsuccessful Generals and ex-War Secretaries were occasionally to launch an arrow, or dart a javelin, at him. The Great Fire Some idea may be formed of the confusion which ruled the hour, and great loss of property, at ihe great fire at New York, from the fact staled in the Journal of Commerce, ff Friday, that the total amount of goon's secured, at the police office, from the fire and from the thieves, is about $50,000. Bat. Pet. To expel Frost --T 'he next morning after a night'i frost, at day break or enon after, spiinkle every thing liable to injury with water from the watering pot. -The quantity of water required will bear proportion to the intensity of the frost. -- This will generally secure vegetables from injury, even though the froit should appear for several nights successively. Frozen vegetables should before cooking, be immersed in cold water, by which the frost is extracted. Frozen limbs too, if" warmed by the fire, mortify, but im. mersed in cold water, no injury follows, except a slight inflammation, and this not always. Gardent.
