llo-ji to acquire knowledge. Young men, would you he intelligent? Carry a hook about you always. Not a novel hut a work of' utility a work in which you may read of realities, not fiction. Would you ho wise? Open and read that hook when ever you have a moment of leisure.
I recollect to have read an anecdote of a shoemaker, who always kept a book open
before him, eo that he might not lose a
moment, but be preparing himself for future usefulness and the tesult was, that he became not only one of the most eminent, but one of the most u?efui men of his day. Why, my young friend, may you not by pursuing a similar course, al
so become eminent and u.eful to your country and your fellow-men ? Adopt the course ;md give it a fair trial, and if you
do not succeed to the extent of your ambition, I guarantee that you will not p the worse mechanic or citizen for the ex peirment.

BREACH OF FROMISE. Lynda J. Moore vs. Jonathan M. Bosie This was an action of assumpsit on a promise of marriage, and the damages were laid at 3 000 dollurs. The partite were of respectable character and standing in society, the plaintiff being a school teacher, and the defendant a merchant. The promise was acknowledged by the defendant, it being abundantly proved by tli- assiduous attentions he had rendered to the plaintitf for about eighteen months and the letters he had addressed to her during that lime. And he had disabled
himself from fulfilling his promise, by marrying' another lady. The main ground of defence taken by the defendant's conn 6el was, that the darnands should be merely uominat: that such had been the conduct of the plaintitf receiving the addresses of other gentlemen, and such the improprieties of her conduct in other refpecti, during her intimacy with the defendant, as either fully to justify, or at len-t greatly palliate, his conduct in dissolving the engagement. Oo the other fide, much evidence was introduced to rebut the testimony rf the defendant in relation to the above points. The court,
in briefly summing up the evidence to the The Cat Jet out of the Peg. A Yankee jury, stated, among other thing, that , i 'rick An Illinois paper sa s : An "H me . when inJiviriuals were under a marriairei'ale Yankee passed through this vi'.lr.ge a
