bV Ki qi'EST OF A BAClULOR i rnousK to livialonl. The luipti-vl bands seem all a rage With one continual tone, About the bachelors and old maids, Because they live alone. Let ether seek Iheir happiness And I will seek 1113' own; And let them marry if they plase, 1 chouse to live alone. Where two ure formed for social life, And senile passions own ; Tis best they should be man and wife; And I should live alone. Where two with tranquil peace are blest, And strife have never known, No doubt they think it i hut best Hint one should live alone. Increased in fnmily and cures They mut look to their onn, But mi perplexed with these affairs, have my peace alone. White some to poverty and strife, 'Iheir wretched fate bemoan, And wear away a tedious life, hare my peace alone. Ennnred, and cannot difeneage, The truth they will not own, But envy me my happiness Because I live alone. The force of love I don't deny, Its gentle power I own, But prize uiy liberty so high, I choose to live alone.
THE THUNDER STOIIM. BY GEORGE D. PRENTICE. I was never a man of feeble courage. There ure few scenes either of human or elemental stt ife, upon which 1 have not looked with a brow of daring. 1 have stood in the fiont of the battle, when swords were gleaming and circling around me like fiery serpents of the air J have eat on the mountain pinnacle, when the w hitlwind was itndingits oaks from their rocky clefts and scattering them piecemeal to the clouds I have seen these things with a swelling goal, that knew not, that recked not of dauger but there is something tn the thunder's voice that makes me tremble like a child. I have tried to overcome this unmanly weakness . 1 have called pride to my aid. I have!
ought for moral courage in the lessons of philosophy but it avails me nothing at the first low moaning of the distant
cloud, my heart shrink?, quirers, gasps and dies within me. My involuntary dread of thunder had its eiign in an incident, that occurred when t was a child of ten years. I bad a little cousin a girl of tbe fame age with myself, who had been the constant com panion of my childhood. Strange, that after the lapse of almost a score of years, that countenance should be so familiar to tne. I can see the bright young creature her large ee flashing like a beautiful gem, her free locks streaming as in joy upon the riling gale, and her cheek glowing like a ruby through a wreath of transparent snow. Her voice had the
melody and jnyuusness of a bird's, and
creature who 6tood iy me shut ner
eyes convulsively, clung with desperate strength to my arm, and shreaked as il 1 1.1 r .- . :

utes, and the storm was upon us. During the height of its fury, the little gill raised
her fingers to the precipice, that towered above u. I looked up, and an mnelhyis
tine fUme was quivering upon 1 ta grey
peaks: and the next moment, the clouds
opened , the rocks tottered to their foundations, a roar like a groan of the uni
verse filled the air, and I felt myself blind ed and thrown, I knew not whither. How
long I remained insensible, I cannot tell,
but, when consciousness returned the vio
lence of the tempest was abating, the roaring of the winds dvinsr in the tree
o - tops, and the deep tones of the cloud
coming in faint murmeis from the eastern
hills. 1 arose, and looked trembling aod almost deletions. y around. She was there the dear idol of my infant love stretched out upon the wet grean earth. Alter a moment of irresolution, 1 went up and looked upon her. The handkerchif upon her neck was slightly rent, and a single datk spot upon her bosom told where the pathway of death had been. At first I clasped her to my breast with a cry of agony, and then laid her down and gazed into her face, almost with a feeling of calmness. Uer bright disheveled ringlets clustered sweetly around her brow, the look of terror had faded ftom her lips, and an infant smile was pictured beautifully there, the red rore tinge upon her cheek was lovely as in life, and us 1 pregsed it to my own,
the fountain of tears was opened, and j I wept as if my head were wateis. 1 1 have but a dim recollection of what fol-j lowed only know, that I remained j weeping and motionless till the coming on 1
of twilight, and that 1 was then taken tenderly by the hand, and led away where I saw the countenances of parents aud sisters.
But between you and me, he a .taken
greater liberties with my wile.

Entering the convention with Johnson, he immediately broached this new charge against that unfortunate gentleman, and very honestly appealed to himself lor its confirmation. This gentleman, said he pointing to Johnson, is my authoiity. But that gentleman, said one of the assembly who knew him, is Mr. Johnson himself. Is that Mr. Johnson! exclaimed the strange clergyman, staring and staring as if he had seen a ghost.
