When the peiiod ariived for the parties to return into the country, Mr Abernethy presented the youug lady with a small parcel to take home with her, in hich he informed her whs a little present to reward her good behaviour under bodily af-

SILK. We are informed that Mr. Rap.p t.fLcouctny, in Pennsylvania has erected a thiowsting mill, 9G spindles, which he has made him-elf, with which he intends tc throw silk of his own raising. He ha; raised this year a very great number of silk worms, and has four reels at work, from which he expects to make aboe one hundred pounds of raw silk. In the same manner, but on a smaller scale, Jod-

auian ii. Lobb, Lsq of Dedham. Maes.

has a reeling establishment, and his raw silk is to be thrown by Mr. Edward Frown, who kas also a throwing miH of which we have made mention in a former number, as well as that of Mr. Ripka. at Manayunk, near Philadelphia, which has 8'2 spindles. It was by mistake that wc stated it to have only CO. Thce are, we believe, the only throwsting mills that are at work in the United States; at least we have heard of no other. There is none yet at New York, but we think there will soon be. Several new ma bines for weaving silk and cottoa have alieady been erected in that city, particularly the celebrated loom a la jaquart. We are happy to witness these exer-

tion-, whi( fi show the great impulse which the silk business has received within these two years, and the correct and regular course it is now taking. We are pleased also to see the experiments made in reel: ing silk from the cocoons, Mr. Rapp,'and Mr Cobb, are both very ingenious .men, and it any can succeed in such an undertaking they will. They have both beeo

Hat Manufacture We presumo hundreds ot our readers will recollect the hue ami cry raied against the duty of 39 per cent laid upon imported hats Prediction opened her mouth and foretold that thia duty would make every hat cost gl 50 or $2 more to the wearer. Long and loud were clamors against the manufacturers of hats, lor thus presuming to tax the people for their own benefit. Then only the richer classes pretended to put on a fur hat, while the poor were content with felt, straw and chip Now the effect of this protecting duty has been so as to enable

(almost every man to wear his fur hat, by llessa ninK the price of hats almost to tho i amount ot the protecting duty. The j American hats are not only cheaper, but far better than imported hats that can be j afforded at an equal price We h ue ,seen in the hat store of Martin Gore, a ; white hat manufactured by him, weighing j only -1 1 2 ounces It is a bcauUtut specimen ol American skill and workman-

ship; and tho price is perhap-s four or five ilollais less than it would have been tea years ago. Such has been the operation of the "accursed tat iff." Portland ildv.
