day or two on the dock. The Custom House officers consented, snd Tbommasssn said he was going to the Fifth Avenue Hotel. He went tbsre, registered under the n*me of W. K. Thomas of Dresden, and remained ontil the 28th ef October. The box remained in front of the Custom House office for a weiek. Officer Banks, who was in charge, wanted to seo what was in it before he left, and when he saw it eontained stoel lining be was satisfied. It was then pat in the baggage room and wo thought nothing of it till we saw the Herald of Sunday aboat an allusion to his attempting to skip specie and obtain an insurance on it. I recollect Thomassen or Thomas perfectly well he wore gold spectacles snd looked a perfcct gentleman. The doctor of tho Celtic remembers him. Superintendent Riddle, of the wharf, teld me on Monday that the case was in the baggage room. I then went to Superintendent Walling and told him of it snd he told me to inform the Buresu of Combustibles of the same. I then ??ent there and was told that an inspector would come sad remove it. As they were getting rather uneasy on the sub ject on the wharf, Mr. Kelly, the cooper on the pier, opened it carefully. There were three boxes. We pried off the steel straps snd threw baek the lid, after taking out the French sails. I«»ids we found a box of thitt sheet steel, which fltted the wooden hex exactly. Tho lid was loose lis the middle. We found some old wrapping and straw envelopes for bottles underneath. Inside the steel box, under the rubbish, we found a small wooden box, I0x4t8 inches, heavily corded, with brown paper wrapper on it Wo cat the wrapper off very carefully, believing it to contain explosive material, and found the cover was fastened with four screwe. The box was of halfinch stuff. After getting oat the screws we foand it contained^ wo hags ef Nos. and 3 shot, made by Walker Parker, of London. There were four bags of shot in all, eaeh of twenty-five pounds—two bags in the little box and two fastening the little box steady in the steel box.
