either to run her bow afoul of a sunken sycamore, ground the craft on a bar, or impale her upon A snag. Just so 'is it with a stranger in our town. Looking ahead he sees a fine straight viata of pavements, evidently just the thing for the pedestrian. But he quickly finds himself deoeiyed, and his eyes must look cut for his toes. If it is a dark night he is lucky not to pick himself up to brush his breeches and rub his shins, once for eyery block be travels. It is a nuisance almost as bad as the other alternative, mud. We had begun to ia. dicate more particularly the bad places on our streets, but they are far too numerous to mention and those who are obliged to walk the streets know them well. Any man that would construct a pavement with the gratings either projecting or depressed ought to be shot. These healthy remarks are occasioned by the fact that a certain pedestrian who from constant wanderings is as well acquainted with Terre Haute streets as anybody, and thought he knew by heart ail the bad places, last night wrecked himself on the insidious grating south of Main street on the east side of Fourth. He unhinged about two rods from the projection, and his knees, which always before did their duty well, have since been in a state of chronic stiffness' Besides, be does nek pride himself particularly on his fine clothes, but ten pounds of dust is slightly too much to adhere comfortably to those he does possess.

Calvert knocked Smith down with his fist. Smith struck tho officer twiee, but the

MBS- JAMTO A. OATBS, famous in comic opera, is on another brilliant tour, with an extensive reportoirs offsplendid entertainments. She appesrs in this city two nights Bext week, in "Gerofle Giroda," and "The Princess of Trib'zocde." The Boston Journal, a high authority, says of her as follows MiVicker's Theatre was filled in every part last evening by as fine an audience as eter assembled there. The opera presented by the Oates company was the ever-popukr comio one entitled "Madam Aagot's Child." Mrs. Oates appeared in the character of Clar* etta. As usual, she completely captivated the entire audience by her exquisite sing, ing and her sprightliness as well. This character is one of her best, and one in whioh she has fall rcope for her humorous and versatile qu&litiw. The otber principal charficters were as usual, well taken by the principal members of the company. The bewitching little lady was encored several times, This evening the opera of "Girofle Ciroila" will be pressnt-
THE following is from the Boston Transcript in regard to Frank Mayo in Davy Crockett: At the Boston Theater last evening the play of Davy Crockett was brought out, with Mr. Frsnk Mayo in the title role. The piece is neither coarse nor offensive in its language and action. There aro no characters from low life, no shoulder-hitters, gamblers, or highway robbers to horrify the audience with their wicked deeds through the first four acts, and then to be instantaneously converted or comfortably shot in the fifth. The aim of the piece is to transform the brave backwoodsman, Dsvy Crockett, into an heroie forest knight errant, with a chivalrous sense of honor that would do credit to the knights of King Arthur's round table. ation e*£n more than the author's ideal, his acting being, as it always is, excellent.
