F«w Plain Words Upon Farm
ing.
Is our farming satisfectory. that is, Is each former satisfied with what he is doing
We ail know that this is not tho case generally. Now and then a good year and a good crop proves, satisfactory, but what the extent
Tho reason why general farming is tn this unsatisfactory state is in consequence of a lack tea come up to the fctw goud forms that are in a prosperous condition.
It is ail in the arrangement. A good farmer wilt take a poor form and make It pay, but not by conducting it aa it has boon conducted.
I have read in the report of the Alton Horticultural Society that ninety bushels of corn were raised on tho Alton blufts without rain by repeatedly stirring the sol). Mr. MePike grew this com.
Are our formers doing this stirring tho soil—doing it whether there la drouth or not? No. They havo as ninoh as they do to plow and sow their land, and the majority have not the time to do that well even.
Nowt pulverisation and stirring the soli are twin brothers with manure. Hut wo neglect both manure and working the land and as to underdraining, tilo-laylag, it is out ol the question.
Too much land, too much work, It the burden of the farmer. Both are heavy upon him, an they will eventa
Why continue this The answer is because we have acted so heretofore. It Is a habit, and to get out of such a heavy rut as a farm with all its weighty concerns constantly crowding is, or appears to be, one of the impOKslbUittee. So exeuses are made, and the old routine is wnti uued. lict us make up our nintlt to got out ot this, stake or break." Begin with tnaged, that it for the pro* tend it

Boston Public Schools.
"A little Hebrew girl who waa In the habit of observing Saturday am a holy day, according to the custom of her faith, waa recently sentenced to three months' imprisonment in a Boston reformatory because she would not go to school on Saturday morning, the Boston schools are in operation on Saturday}."
Here we here very signlfioect example of the manner in which one religious creed may jar upon Another. To the Jewish girl Saturday is the Sabbath ordained by the Almighty— the only Sabbath, by the way, for which any expires! sanction can be found In Scripture. To the Christian school board, who procurred her punishment, and the Christian court which indicted it, Saturday is simply a work day, without any sanctity whatever. In the estimation oI board and court. Judaism is a species of Infidelity which may be tolerated to certain extent, but not encouraged. *n the estimation of the Jewish girl and her people, Christianity is a mere compound of absurdities and blasphemy.
But without entering into the merits of the case any farther, we may say that such a punishment for such an offence is an intolerable outrage upon nineteenth century civilisation, and the sooner Massachusetts repeals the law by which sneb outrages can be perpertrated, the better for her reputation.
