A Duplex Elliptic Hustwroa. A case of downright bigamy was developed yesterday. Richard utter was arrested and brought before Magistrate Cookerly at the complaint of Elizabeth Utter and Lucy Utter, or rather Lucy Graham that was, on the ground that the defendant bad wooed and won both of them, contrary to the laws of the United States, the peaca and dignity of the Commonwealth of Indiana, the rules and usages of civilized society outside of Utah, the stataes in such cases made and provided, and the ideas of decorum of the females aforesaid.

It seems that Utter was married fifteen years a^o to the first named de fendant,in Vermillion county, and by her had t«ro children. Fi*e years ago, or ten yetr.? after his £r«t alliance, be married Lucy Ui'hasa, of Vigo county lie lived with her about a week, and then went back to the bosom of family No. 1 Vermillion, county. During the five years he visited both wives, and seems to have been the main support of both, as becomes a man deemj»g himself c^ptblo of double blessedness. But there came an unhappy day, the third of January in the Centennial vear, which the same it was yesterday, ^ive years is a good while for the safe keeping of such a secret, especially when tbo sccret concerns females in adjoining counties. They met. They realised all. They found out the duplicity of their much married Kichard. Green-eyed jealousy did not drive them to fly at each other and begin pulling hair, but like the two sensible women they are they comprehended that they bad been basely wronged and heartlessly deceived. Action was forthwith commenced. Uttcr's trial was appointed for next Wednesday and in the meantime he was sent to jail under bond of $5C0.

Dowxsr, the Sugar Creek farmer who was shot by Herri ugtou at a dance in his own houre on New Year's eve, was still alive yesterday and resting comfortably, but past recovery. He is a VQung man of about tv/cnty-sjx. Herrington is twenty, one or two years old. Ho has not been captured. All day Sunday and all the night before last Deputv Sheriffs Balding and Cleary were out on horseback, scouting in the vicinity of Darwin and thence westward, on the track of the fugitive, who is on foot. They come home yesterday and got a little sleep, and started out again last night, with the ex poctAtion of taking up tho trail agaia near Martinsville, toward which place Herrington seemed to be making, having foolishly deviated from his first course southerly toward the awa&pa. It is probable that herwill bo captured. Messrs. deary and Balding are acoompanied in the chase by young Mr. Page, tho same man who came near beincr killed by Jordon Creesy a week before, at the house of Esq. Peters. He carries the mark of the bullet is his ooat,

partment of the city council held a meeting in regard to tho troubles in company No. 4, which were desoribed in yester? day's paper. The result was that in the first place they discharged George F. Yost as foreman, and without any charges against him as wo understand, a man that has been member of the department for the last nine years- In the second place they appointed the following company to take the place of the old members: Fores man, Joseph McOhesney pipemen, Thomas Matheny, "William Dennis and John Buckly, and extra, Daniel Dean. These men took their new positions yes tenia?.

TUB shop of Mr. Wyatt, the butcher, proves to have been considerably damaged, though not much was burned, for the reason that tho top of the big refrigerator was burned sufficiently to let the water down into tho partitions, thereby soaking and spoiling the packing, so that tho whole thing must be taken apart and the packing replaced. Mr. Rippotoe's property was insured ia tho Phccnix company, lie was grateful enowgh to divide ten dollars among tho firemen, with which they can treat then solves to the "oysters all 'round," and for which they thank him.

A RICH vagabond was admitted to the hospitalities of the Tramps* Retreat last night, having been picked up maudlin and yelling by the police. His personal e&ecta consisted of «ix cents, a crescent of bologna sausage and a pair of ten cent socks. This city is bankrupting itself as fast as it can. Ruin must come, if men are fed and lodged who are so well provided for. If old Boss Tweed or Commodore Vanderbtli come this way they will W tho next ones to be eared for at the expense of th«eity!

Yesterday on south Third street a boy named Charley May thought the celebration of the "New Year had not .been quite thorough, and was discharging a pistol, when the weapon was accidentally discharged when he was not ready for it, tho charge taking effect in one hand. There *as no bullet in it, but the hsmd was severely powderburned. jRSPLOSIOK.

Charley Seebnrger may dislike to be classed with (boys" under the same heading, but the condition of his hand will indicate that it is all right. On Sunday afternoon about 2 o'clock he was using powder in the celebration of

stuff from a can, in some way a spaffe found its way into the treacherous material, of which he had several pounds, causing a great explosion. A cloqd of smoke was sent up, giving people iti the vicinity the impression that thera wae a lire. Charley's hand was torn open between the thutab and fingers,^ in fact almost split across. His injuries, which causcd him much pain, were dressed by Dr. Stevenson, and it is thought tho hand will be saved. It is fortunate that tho accident resulted no worse, aa it might easily have done.

THE box sheet for tho Wallace Sisters is now open at tho hook store of Button & Hamilton on Main street. Jennie, Minnie and Maud aro charming in sensatianal variety performance, and with tboir large experience and the long practice of the company supporting them are able to give a splendid entertainment There is little doubt that the house will bo crowded.

It was even a mora empty aensation than that of the scare at the store of Hulman & Cox, which occurred about the same time.

But yesterday abou aocthwast corner of structure gave way, and oame tumbling down open the rocks and bricks with a crash. It had withstood the high water of last August, but oould not bear up under the weight of the pile of salt pork that had been stored there. A large amount of the nice pork fell mingling with the bricks and dnst and boards. Soma of it can be used, though in a damsged condition. The total loss is about $50U.

The one who is sick is a girl of thirteen or fourteen, and there are also several other children in the family, The night school begun as usual last evening.
