The bone measures 4| feet in length and was buried eleven feet deep. The mastodon, a large mammal belonging to prehistoric ages and now extinct, resembled the elephant but was larger. The remains of mastodons are found in the temperate zones of both hemispheres. LaPorte. —Pneumonia contracted from a “cold sweat” when cornered and attacked by a bull, almost caused the death of Lotfis Crum, 68 years old, of Crumstown. He was walking on his son’s farm when the bull attacked him. Before aid could reach him the bull had knocked him down, broke his collar bone and inflicted a deep gash in his neck close to the jugular vein. o . i An optimist is a fellow who loans a guy $lO when said guy already owes him- S2O. o If a fellow succeeds in making us think it is so he is a diplomat. HOUSEHOLD HINTS To ship a mirror or a fixture /without breaking the glass, paste narrow strips of paper diagonally across the glass; this breaks the vibrations and prevents damage that often results. A dainty sandwich for an afternoon tea is made by spreading a thin cracker lightly with butter. Place on this a chocolate peppermint. Now butter another cracker and place on top. Put on a tin sheet and place in a very moderate oven. ’ Let it remain till the peppermint is melted and forms a filling between the crackers. If you want to get the salt out of salt fish in the quickest time possible soak it in sweet milk instead of water. Try wetting ink stains with peroxide of hydrogen and then laying in the sun. 1 Brushes and combs are best washed in strong ammonia water, having it cold for the bristles of the brushes. To Clean White Shoes The best way to clean white canvas shoes is to put them on a shoe tree and scrub them with lukewarm water and white soap. When they are dry they are whiter and there is no powder to come off on the clothes. The same should be done with children’s shoes. If there aren’t any shoe trees, stuff them well to keep them from- shrinking. The white powder with which children’s shoes are cleaned is hard to get out of dark clothes. Easier Washing Shave an ounce of paraffin and a bar of soap into a basin of water and boil a few minutes until dissolved. Pour this into a boiler of boiling water and mix with water. Wet soiled clothes in cold water, wring them and put in boiling suds and boil ten minutes. They will require very little rubbing and the finest of clothes will not be injured. This will suffice for a large washing; a smaller amount can be used for a small washing.

THAT DULL ACHING ’ Don’t worry and complain about a bad back. Get rid of it! For weak kidneys, lame and achy backs, your neighbors recommend Doan’s Kidney Pills. Ask your neighbor! Mrs. C. E. Brady, Huntington St., Syracuse, says: “I strained my back a long time ago and it caused trouble. Stabbing pains darted across the small of my back when I washed and on several occasions I feared my back would snap in two before I got into an erect position. When I was on my feet a short time, a dull, bearing down pain settled in my kidneys. My nerves troubled me steadily and I became fearfully dizzy and big spots appeared before my eyes, affecting my sight. My kidneys acted too often. Mornings I felt tired and I was all run down.
