At a reception in London a lady questioned Robert Browning, the poet, ; us to the meaning of a passage in <?ne of ids poems that had long been !n dispute. “Upon my word.” he said, *‘l don’t know what it means. 1 advise you to ask the Browning sosiety—they'll tell you all abodt it.” Cardinal Newman, in his old age, frankly admitted that he could not remember what he meant when be penned those famous lines in his “Lead, Kindly Light:” “And with the morn, those angel faces smile, which I have loved long since and lost awhile.” o Justice to the Bedbug. Many times the bedbug lias been accused of transmitting disease, bin the investigating scientist of the United States public health service j says the bug apparently lias oeen | charged with w i ongdu.i.g when not , guilty, as the pest has no way save tlie mouth in which to carry germs and is too busy eating to make mouth germs of any special danger. However, the ilea, louse mid mosquito have been convicted of being disease carriers. _— o Drainage Into Gulf of Mexico. A comparatively small part of the. According to a prophecy uttered by Prof. William E. Scott of Princeton, when the world's coal supply is exhausted. fair complexions will disappear and we may even become a black-sdiinned race, says the wily professor. He explained that fair-skinned 1 maidens are hothouse products, uof hot climate products. They cannot withstand the equa'-orh— suns of the tropics, io which we must al! flock as soon as the last shovelful of coal is thrown into the fire; so runs the prophecy. Firefly Illumination. The firefly is a well-known beetle of the elateridae family, which is able to throw out a strong and apparently phosphorescent light in the dark. The illumination is intermittent, and appears to be under the control qf the insect’s nervous system.' Royal Speech in Second Place. It is popriarly supposed that anew session of Hie British parliament begins with the king’s speech.' but la tealtty this is not so. Precedifig ths speech from the throne a “dummy” bid Is always presented for first reading—a little fiction carefully preserved la order to as-ert the independence of parliament, u the belief that to turn at once to P e speech might suggest a too-eager pi ‘occupation with his majesty’s word‘u .— o Coal Lost in Waste. Under ordinary conditions of. mining ami firing, out of every 2.000 pounds of steam coal in place in the mine, only about 75 pounds are converted into mechanical energy —a most surprising fact. The other 1.924 pounds are either unavailable or are absorbed by the eight losses. Get Back on Right Track. No matter how much you patch up a mistake, it won’t change its nature! Better right it. and go back to the place wnere you left the right track! You’ll save time, and better still, you’ll save heart aches.
