' to control these insects increases the yield from 25 to 50 percent. Probably the most generally ■ destructive potato insect in In-1 diana*is the potato leaf hopper, a tiny green active insect, which ' causes what is commonly termed ; “tip-burn.” This insect lives on the under side of the leaves and sucks the plant juices.' They are ■ quite active, crawling about rapidly when disturbed and later when they become mature, they fly up from the potato ; plants in swarms when the vines are disturbed. Leaf eating beetles such as 1 potato beetles, blister beetles, and flea-beetles are also usually present in greater or less abund- ' ance and occasionally the green , aphis is present in destructive numbers. The leaf eating insects are controlled by an arsen- 1 ical spray and the leaf hopper is repelled by Bordeaux mix- j ture. A regular spray schedule to control all of the potato insects, excepting aphis, cutworm, stalkborer, and underground insects, | is recommended. A spray of Bordeaux mixture which consists of 4 ‘'pounds of copper sul- 1 phate. 4 pounds of hydrated or rock lime to 50 gallons of water, plus powdered larsenate of lead at the rate of 3 pounds : to 100 gallons (twice as much lead if the paste is used) should ; be applied when the plants are 1 6 to 8 inches high and thereUUGI i! after every two weeks. Three thorough applications are pro- ; bably sufficient in ordinary sea- , sons. It is very important that i the spray cover the undersur* i face of the leaves as leaf hopi pers work there almost exclusively. If aphids appear spray with nicotine sulphate at the rate of 1, part to 800 of : water with soap or add nicotine sulphate to the Bordeaux arsen- ; ate spray at the rate of 1 to 500 ; parts of Bordeaux. o —— GRAUE LUTHERAN ( lil fiX’H Rev.
