This phenomenon Is caused partly by the fact that the earth is 'oslng the perfect streamlined curves of its early days and is becoming wrinkled with mountains and volcanoes which Impede its whirling. The main factor, however. Is stated to be found in tidal movements. Working under the combined Influence of sun and moon, oceans bulge out and act as brakes on the rota tion of the earth. Another irnpor tant cause is found in geological die turbances brought about by the shifting of internal masses. This fling Ing of the world’s contents, like so much loose baggage in a freight car, tends to detract from the constancy of the earth’s spinning. Calculations to date sh,ow this loss of speed Increases progressively so that 100 years hence the earth’s rotation will have suffered a loss of 18 seconds, and within two centuries, one minute and 12 seconds. In 2,000 years it will be one hour and 50 minutes behind its merry-go-round schedule This lengthening of the day is ex plained by the longer time it would take for the earth to complete one single turn on its polar axis. The majority of these calculations are based on the studies of tidal ae tions on planets and their satellites carried out by the astro-physicist. M. Conestoga Wagon Drivers First to Keep to Right Why do American drivers keep to the right instead of to the left as in England and some Continental countries? In the new Columbia Encyclopedia drivers of the famous Conestoga wagons are credited with originating the custom because they rode the left wheel horse. The wagons, often called “ships of inland commerce,” carted freight over the Allegheny mountains before railroads were built in 18.50. The Conestoga wagon originated in Pennsylvania before* the Revolution. according to the encyclopedists. It was pulled by a six-horse team and was capable of carrying a fiveton load. The bottom of the wagon box was curved, rising at both ends sb that in going up and down hills the goods would shift less easily and the end-gate be subject to less strain. The prairie-schooner was a modification of the Conestoga wagon.
