WILLIAM JASPERSON “For twenty ifve years I was the < victi ,mos lumbago,” said Mr. Vt illiam jaaperson, 315 Pierce street, Gary, Ind. ”1 was in a very run-down condition. without ambition, or energy--1 suffered constantly from pains in my hip. During all this time I also had constipation. “I had been reading about the splendid accomplishments of K njola, and decided to find out what it could do for me. After taking seven bottles of this new medicine I was relieved of that chronic case of lumbago; Constipation and other troubles disappeared and 1 anr freed ,of all aches and pains. Konjola restored ine to health and I recommend it to all who suffer as I did.” Konjola is sold in Syracuse at the Thornburg Drug Co., and by all the best druggists in all towns throughout this section. VESTEL EXPLAINS FEEDING OF SOW “Safeguard the pig crop by proper feeding and management of brood sows during gestation,” was the keys’ note of a talk by C. M. Vestal of the Purdue University department of animal husbandry before the livestock group at the recent agricultural conference at the University. “Rations for sows during gestation should be nutritous and bulky, Vestal pointed out. A liberal feed of the bulky ration satisfies the appetite of the sow without producing over-fat-ness, as sometimes occurs when a concentrated ration such as corn alone is fed. It is not necessary to buy expensive food. to secure the best results. Homegrown feeds should make up a greater part of the ration. A bushel of corn with a bushel of oats and five pounds of tankage will feed properly 18 or 20 brood sows for one day at a low cost. A liberal feed of good quality alfalfa or clover hay with enough corn to keep the sows in medium condi- ’ tion and one-fourth to one-third pounds of tankage for each sow is another ration that will bring the desired results at farrowing time. “Probably the greatest mistake in the management of brood sows during gestation is the feeding of corn alone. This ration lacks the proteins and minerals necessary to produce large litters of thrifty pigs. Although corn alone may appear to be the cheapest feed on the farm, it is likely to be the most expensive. “Another mistake," he contiued, “is to have the sows either very fat of very thin. Medium condiiton of flesh gives the best results. The sow ' should weigh about the same when she weans her pigs as at breeding tW To do this, she should gain one-half to three- fourths of a pound dafly during the period of gestation to provide for the & to #

which occurs during the farrowing and nursing. A 400 pound sow requires approximately five pounds of feed daily to keep gaining properly and to maintain medium condition of flesh. “If sows are in thin condition at farrowing, they do not have the reserve necessary to nourish properly a large litter of pigs. On the other hand, if sows are too fat, they may experience difficulty at farrowing time and the excess fat has been put on at unnecessary cost. The veryfat sow as a rule .has consumed approximately twice as much feed during gestation as the Sow of medium condition. ! pared to enforce the law against overloads, and to watch particularly for the truck driver who sneaks out -after dark with excess tonnage thinking he can slip through. ! Most truck operators cooperate with the department in saving the unpaved roads at seasons when they may be easily destroyed by heavy loads, but generally there are a few in each locality who resort to all sorts of trickery to evade the overload law, highway officials declare.
